100-1 Royal Ascot horse ‘could be one of the biggest gambles ever' after odds DESTROYED for top trainer

The Irish Suna day ago

A little-known horse who has seen his odds OBLITERATED from 100-1 into 8-1 could be 'one of the biggest Royal Ascot gambles ever', petrified bookies have confirmed.
Trainer Joseph O'Brien, son of iconic handler Aidan, has watched the odds on The Liffey tumble down repeatedly in the build-up to the world's biggest Flat racing festival.

The four-year-old gelding has raced just four times in his life and used to be trained by the Ballydoyle king.
But The Liffey was moved to Joseph's Kilkenny yard in April this year, a month before he made his comeback after 350 days off the track.
Interestingly, John Magnier and Derrick Smith, two-thirds of the all-conquering Coolmore syndicate, kept their share in the horse while Michael Tabor opted out.
Two more owners came in ahead of his encouraging fourth-placed finish at odds of 16-1 in a Listed contest over seven furlongs at Naas.
While he might not have looked a world-beater on the occasion, his subsequent mark of 98 has led many to believe the handicapper has seriously underestimated him.
And a gamble from odds of 100-1 last month into just 8-1 now suggests the son of No Nay Never is capable of much more.
While it doesn't take stacks of cash to move a market in the Royal Hunt Cup handicap this far out, bookies have certainly taken notice of the monster plunge.
Paddy Power's Paul Binfield said: "We first put The Liffey into the race at 100-1 and we took plenty of bets at fancy prices.

"Those wagers meant he was already a decent loser for a handicap so far from post-time, but then when we were around the 20-1 mark momentum really took off and he's now incredulously into just 8-1.
"He's already a bad ante-post result for us.
"It's a little too early to say it's turning into one of the biggest ever Royal extravaganza gambles we've ever encountered.
"Mainly because the money we've seen is unlikely to be of the scale of liabilities we'll be holding on the actual day.
"But should the momentum continue in the way that it has, and punters get stuck into the No Nay Never gelding on that Wednesday, it's certainly not inconceivable that it might be up there."

Five eye-catching Royal Ascot jockey bookings including 17-year-old with ‘glowing reputation' and ‘greatest of all time'

IN the absolute punting minefield that is Royal Ascot, sometimes the best way to go is picking a jockey and sticking with them. Recent history shows following that principle with Ryan Moore won't serve you too badly. 3 Ryan Moore will be the jockey of choice for almost everyone at Royal Ascot - but a load of other names make plenty of appeal too Credit: Shutterstock Editorial But with runners from Japan, America and almost every corner of the globe, there will be some new names - and old - to get your head around at the Berkshire track. A load of jockey bookings are being added to the racecards now, so it looks like the perfect time to strike. Here, I take a look at five of the most eye-catching rides ahead of the five-day festival. 1 James McDonald Look, we all know that in this hemisphere, at least, Ryan Moore is the best jockey. 3 James McDonald will pick up some very interesting spare rides for Wathnan Credit: Getty Images - Getty But Down Under they are of the firm opinion that McDonald, with 119 Group 1s to his name, is the king. Trainer Chris Waller even said Macca will be remembered as 'the greatest of all time'. Well, to do that he is going to need some Royal Ascot winners! Most read in Horse Racing And he just might after the big-spending Wathnan Racing operation snapped him up for some rides. James Doyle is Wathnan's No1 but McDonald, along with Will Buick, will deputise. And McDonald looks like he will ride the likes of Underwriter in the Coventry and Aesterius in the King Charles III. Away from that squad, McDonald will ride Carl Spackler, who is a 20-1 chance in the blockbuster Queen Anne, the first race on day one. 2 Warren Fentiman This 5lb claimer - son of journeyman jockey Duran - is riding out of his skin and worth following wherever he goes. Still only 17 and with a 'glowing reputation', Fentiman is an interesting booking on Richard Fahey's Ramazan in the Buckingham Palace Stakes. 3 The 17-year-old is being snapped up by trainers eager to make use of his 5lb claim Credit: Getty If all goes well and he gets in the field, Fentiman's allowance will come in handy for this intriguing handicap-dropper. Fentiman beat his old man in a race during the Chester May Festival and won the three-year-old Dash at Epsom on Derby weekend. His red-hot form could land him an Ascot winner too after he was booked for Gavin Cromwell's brilliant My Mate Mozzie in the Copper Horse Handicap on Tuesday. 3 Colin Keane Juddmonte's new No1 has one of the best jobs in racing. Keane is a six-time champion in Ireland but may not be massively familiar to British punters. This week could change all that. Among his big book of rides if St James's Palace good thing Field Of Gold, Lockinge winner Lead Artist in the Queen Anne and Babouche in the Commonwealth Cup. 4 Faleh Bughenaim Hailed as 'the best jockey in Qatar', Faleh will have a big ride for Wathnan in the Royal Hunt Cup aboard Jeff Koons. Faleh has just one win from 16 rides in Britain in his career but you can be sure the Emir of Qatar, who owns Wathnan, will have lined up a good one for his country's top star. 5 Christophe Soumillon 'Super Sou' has ridden winners all over the world - but it could be the Royal Hunt Cup where he gets his Ascot one this year. The legendary rider has been jocked up on Greek Order, a fascinating and lightly-raced five-year-old contender trained by Michael Bell. Greek Order was owned by Juddmonte until last month when he changed hands for around £80,000. He's currently 25-1 for the 30-runner cavalry charge but could go off much shorter on the day. Horse racing tips: ‘He's bigger, stronger and better than ever' – Templegate's 5-2 NAP for the Gosdens

TEMPLEGATE tackles Friday's racing confident of building the bank for Royal Ascot. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. BURRITO (4.10 York, nap) Having missed his two-year-old season, this Gosden-trained son of Lope De Vega showed bundles of promise when winning on debut at Newmarket this time last year. He then went close at Chester in September before being gelded over the winter. He looked a bigger and stronger prospect when returning at Newbury 28 days ago. The four-year-old absolutely tanked along and was value for a fair bit more than the official margin of half a length. Unfortunately the handicapper was paying attention but a 10lb rise in the weights is fair enough. MISS JUSTICE (3.15 Sandown, nb) Will relish this longer trip under William Buick after an excellent second at Wolverhampton last time. She makes her handicap debut off the same mark and can give the Gosdens another winner. TOPTEAM (3.25 Chester, treble) Enjoyed himself over this course and distance 13 days ago when scooting in by more than three lengths. This race looks little tougher and he can take another step forward for Andrew Balding. Kerry make five changes to team to face Meath in final All-Ireland SFC Group 2 game

It was well known that Paudie Clifford, Paul Geaney, Barry Dan O'Sullivan and Diarmuid O'Connor would not be available for this game, with all four receiving treatment for specific injuries, and none of that quartet are included in the match day squad to face the Royal county in O'Connor Park. Clifford, Geaney and O'Sullivan all started the game against Cork but none of them played into the second half, while O'Connor wasn't part of the squad in Pairc Uí Chaoimh, with a groin injury given as the reason for his absence. There are two other changes for Saturday's encounter with Meath, with Dylan Casey and Brian Ó Beaglaoich not retaining their starting places in defence, and they are replaced by Paul Murphy and Tadhg Morley respectively. Casey is named among the substitutes, which suggests his dropping to the bench is tactical, but Ó Beaglaoich is not on the named squad, which could indicate an injury issue. Dara Moynihan is also named on the match day squad for the first time this year. The Spa club man hasn't played with Kerry since last year's All-Ireland semi-final loss to Armagh, having spent the best part of the last year rehabbing a serious injury. As expected, Mark O'Shea comes into at midfield for Barry Dan O'Sullivan, whose knee injury is a serious one, and threatening to end his involvement for the result of the season. Killian Spillane and Dylan Geaney are also handed starts in place of Paudie Clifford and Paul Geaney, with some positional shuffling in the forward unit. Micheal Burns moves back out to the half forward line alongside Graham O'Sullivan and Sean O'Shea, who takes the no.11 jersey. Spillane is named at full forward, in a direct switch for Paul Geaney, whom he replaced at half time against Cork. Dylan Geaney is recalled to the starting 15 in place, and will start in one corner, with David Clifford in the other. A win or a draw for Kerry will secure top spot in Group 2 and send the Kingdom straight to the All-Ireland quarter-finals a fortnight later. A win for Meath would see them finish top of the group and consign Kerry to a preliminary quarter-final with home advantage as second place finishers.
