July 5, Group D: France 2 England 1

The Lionesses' title defence got off to a poor start as goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore in quick succession in the latter stages of the first half put France on course for a deserved win. Keira Walsh's superb late strike did not alter the outcome.

July 9, Group D: England 4 Netherlands 0
Lauren James scored twice as a much-improved England got their campaign up and running. Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone also got on the scoresheet in a commanding display that revived hope of reaching the last eight.
July 13, Group D: England 6 Wales 1
Sarina Wiegman's side powered into the knockout stages with an emphatic victory that confirmed Wales' elimination. Stanway put them on course with a penalty before Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo made it 4-0 at half-time. Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones added to the tally either side of a Hannah Cain consolation.

July 17, Quarter-final: Sweden 2 England 2 (after extra time, won 3-2 on penalties)
England survived a nail-biting penalty shoot-out after hauling themselves back from the brink of defeat. Late goals from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang forced extra time before the drama of an extraordinary spot-kick battle. Just five penalties were scored from 14 taken and Sweden were twice one kick away from victory, but luck was with the Lionesses.
July 22, Semi-final: England 2 Italy 1 (after extra time)

Again England started slowly and were behind at half-time to Barbara Bonansea's thumping finish after a defensive lapse. Agyemang equalised to force extra time and then hit the bar with a superb lob before fellow substitute Chloe Kelly had a penalty saved but followed up to score.

Houston Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was feared to have torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. However, subsequent reports followed up to say that Gardner-Johnson did not tear his ACL and will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury. As he went to make a tackle, he went to the ground and clutched his leg. Texans players took a knee near Gardner-Johnson as silence took over the field. The NFL's interceptions leader in 2022 was unable to put weight on his leg as he was helped onto a cart to be taken to be evaluated. "It's heartbreaking when you see a guy go down on a field like that and doesn't get up quickly" Texans head coach Demeco Ryans said afterward. "I'm always nervous as a head coach anytime I see anybody hit the ground, it's tough to watch." Gardner-Johnson, 27, spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles where he helped them win Super Bowl LIX. He had 59 tackles and six interceptions in 2024 and has picked off 13 passes over the past three seasons. After one season back with the Eagles, Gardner-Johnson was dealt in March to Houston in a trade that sent guard Kenyon Green to Philadelphia. The Texans had plans for him to replace Eric Murray in their secondary after Murray signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Gardner-Johnson began his NFL career with three seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He joined the Eagles 2022 before moving on to the Detroit Lions in 2023. After only three games with the Lions, he suffered a torn pectoral and missed the rest of the season. That offseason, he signed a three-year deal to return to Philadelphia.

We are just over 3 weeks away from the kickoff of the 2025 Purdue football season. Today we've got two players on the countdown. So let's get started! #23 – Jaheim Merriweather Running Back 6'2', 215 lbs Sophomore Jackson, Tennessee 2025 Outlook: Running back rotation Merriweather is one of the few returning players from last year's team. He appeared in 11 games as a freshman. He only carried the ball 15 times for 77 yards, but just to see the field at the running back position as a freshman is a great accomplishment. The hope with this position is obviously that Devin Mockobee will hold down the starting role and hopefully reach 1,000 yards this season. However, even the best of running backs needs breaks. Merriweather could be one of the players to step up into a backup rotation role at the RB position. Opportunities will be available at nearly all positions this season and RB is no different. #23 – Trey Smith Defensive End 6'4', 255 lbs Sophomore (redshirt) Apopka, Florida Previous School: Illinois 2025 Outlook: Defensive end depth Smith comes to Purdue after playing at Illinois last season. He'd been at Illinois for two seasons appearing in 11 games over those two seasons. No huge stats to speak of during that time with only two tackles including one tackle for loss on the season. Now he will look to make an impact on a different Big Ten team just down the road. Smith certainly has some good measurables, now it's a matter of putting it together on the field with a new playbook.

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson exits first preseason game with injury after Ravens sack
Indianapolis quarterback Anthony Richardson sustained an injury in his first preseason game of 2025 Thursday night when he was sacked by the Baltimore Ravens' David Ojabo. Ojabo had a clean run at Richardson and appeared to injure the quarterback's finger. After the sack, Richardson jogged to the sideline and was replaced by Daniel Jones. Jones stayed in at quarterback for the team's next offensive series. Richardson guided the Colts to a field goal on his first drive. The plan for Indianapolis prior to the game was for Richardson to start and play 1½ quarters, with Jones playing half a quarter.
