BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentine Juan Ramon 'La Bruja' Veron, who was revered as a player at Estudiantes de La Plata where he won three Copa Libertadores titles, has died at 81, the club said on Tuesday.
Veron was instrumental in Estudiantes' successes during the late 1960s, helping the team win three consecutive Copa Libertadores crowns in 1968, 1969 and 1970, a domestic league title in 1967, and the Inter-American Cup in 1969.
"La Bruja" (The Witch) is remembered for his goal against Manchester United that secured the 1968 Intercontinental Cup on aggregate after the second leg at Old Trafford.
"Estudiantes announces with deep sorrow the passing of Juan Ramon Veron, an undisputed icon of our history, an absolute reference point for our identity and an eternal symbol of commitment, humility and belonging," the club said on X.
Veron also had spells abroad, featuring for Panathinaikos in Greece and for Junior and Cucuta in Colombia.
After retiring from professional football, Veron worked with Estudiantes' youth divisions. He was also the father of current club president Juan Sebastian Veron.

Cristian Romero named new Tottenham captain after Son's departure
CRISTIAN Romero has been confirmed as Tottenham Hotspur's new captain following the departure of Son Heung-min. The Argentine defender takes over the armband after Son's move to LAFC earlier this month. Son had captained Spurs for the past two seasons, including their Europa League triumph in May. Romero served as vice-captain during that period and led the team in the Europa League final before Son's introduction. The 27-year-old will make his debut as permanent skipper in Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain. New manager Thomas Frank revealed the decision on Tottenham's official website. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' Frank stated. The Danish coach praised Romero's leadership qualities both on and off the pitch. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it,' Frank added about Romero's reaction. The centre-back joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and was part of Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad. Frank emphasised Romero's ability to drive the team forward through his performances and attitude. The appointment comes as Spurs prepare for their first competitive match of the 2025-26 season. Romero's first test as permanent captain will be against European champions PSG in Helsinki. - AFP

REUTERS/Jorge Adorno/File Photo (Reuters) -South American soccer governing body CONMEBOL on Tuesday announced a system to detect racism, hate speech and abuse on social media directed at players, referees, clubs and others with the aim of taking action against the perpetrators. The system will be used starting with the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana continental club competitions, both of which begin later on Tuesday.
