Cheap, easy and energy efficient, microwave baking has its upsides, the food writer Meera Sodha says. This salty-sweet chocolate mug cake is elevated into a rich and indulgent dessert with the addition of white miso paste. Be careful not to overcook it, lest it end up dry and rubbery. Sodha uses a plant-based cream on top, and it's just as delicious with vegan ice-cream.
These caramelised bananas hit that sweet spot when you're craving a little treat but don't want to bake a whole cake. Grilled bananas are 'low effort, high-reward', Benjamina Ebuehi says, and with just three minutes on a pan, they are transformed into a crunchy, buttery delight. The classic combination of nuts and bananas makes this a simple, satisfying dessert.
Bake these for the smell alone. Julia Busuttil Nishimura's buns are made with ground cardamon in the dough and cinnamon in the filling, making this a spicy delight. It's a recipe that requires a morning or afternoon, but it is a fun activity the whole family can get involved in. Ensure your heater is on to allow the dough to properly rise.
Overripe fruit gets a second life in this quick-to-prepare dessert. Peaches (or any fruit that is looking too soft in your fruit bowl) can be transformed with a slather of honey and cinnamon and roasted in the oven for half an hour. What emerges is a golden, warm base that is then topped with coconut cream, crumbled gingernut biscuits and cinnamon. It's a light, tropical twist on a winter dessert, in a hopeful reminder of warmer days to come.
There are many dishes that are hard to master, but thankfully Felicity Cloake's rhubarb crumble is not one of them. 'Perfection here is not difficult,' she writes. In her version, the sourness of the rhubarb is complemented by the buttery nutty crumble as it gets nice and jammy. This is a flexible recipe, she says, so any fruit can be subbed for the rhubarb. But as Cloake notes, make sure to adjust the sugar according to the sweetness of the fruit.

According to Lara Lee's brownie connoisseur husband, these are the best brownies ever. The tamarind paste is heated with golden syrup, sugar, butter and cream and, as Lee says, it creates a distinctive 'sweetly sour profile that offsets the richness of the caramel'. In her recipe, gooey rivers of caramel lace the surface of the brownie, making every square delicious. No more fights over who gets the corner, middle or edge.
Straddling the line between breakfast and dessert, Benjamina Ebuehi's galettes tick all the boxes for winter: they're warm, gooey and decadent. You'll need to set aside about three hours for the prep and cooking, but it's a perfect weekend-morning treat. The toffee-like filling combines honey, almonds, cream, sugar and butter. It's best served warm with a side of cold cream.
A set and forget it pudding, Ravneet Gill's cherry bakewell pudding is a crowd-pleaser with minimal effort. The recipe has just four steps, so the hardest part is waiting for it to finish baking. The tanginess of the cherries and creaminess of the custard reminds Gill of the simple pleasure the dessert brought her in her first days of motherhood. She hopes it brings you the same comfort.

Stunning football presenter Diletta Leotta shocks fans in bizarre see-through outfit for daughter's 2nd birthday party

DAZN host Diletta Leotta celebrated her daughter's second birthday alongside her football ace husband at the weekend. Diletta, 34, shocked her fans at the tot's bash as she sported a bedazzled see-through dress for the party. 12 12 The social media star and presenter shared a whole host of snaps from the party as she and husband Loris Karius celebrated their daughter Aria's second birthday. The couple looked loved-up in some photos, while Diletta caused a stir with her bold outfit choice for her daughter's birthday. Despite the unusual fashion statement, her fans still showered her with compliments in the comments section of the post. One wrote: "Beautiful and beautiful." While another added: "Always beautiful and unique". A third commented: "You are amazing". And a fourth posted: "You are always wonderful". Diletta boasts a whopping 9.2MILLION followers on Instagram, where she is always sharing updates of her life away from the TV cameras. As well as her incredible social media following, Diletta is a host for DAZN 's football coverage in Italy. But the Italian has come under criticism in recent months for her on-screen outfits. Valentina Maceri, who presents Champions League coverage on Swiss broadcaster Blue, slammed Diletta and a number of her DAZN colleague's outfits as "lacking in class" and "vulgar". Diletta has been with former Liverpool goalkeeper Karius since 2022, with the pair welcoming little Aria in 2023 before tying the knot last year. Karius now plays for Bundesliga 2. side Schalke after leaving Newcastle in 2024, meaning the pair have to juggle their relationship over two countries. But the shot-stopper has said their relationship is in safe hands despite the distance, explaining in a recent interview with Sport Bild that Diletta is supportive of his move. He said: "Diletta even advised me to extend at Schalke. She thinks the club is great and she likes everything she has seen here so far. "Diletta also thinks that royal blue is the perfect choice for my sporting success. She is fully behind this decision." Karius, however, admitted it's tough not seeing Aria every day but FaceTime is saving the day. He added: 'But of course it's hard for me when I can't see my little daughter Aria for days. "But that's what FaceTime is for and we see each other regularly - as often as possible." 12 12 12 12

Rukmini Iyer's quick and easy recipe for charred corn salad with halloumi, broccoli and black beans

This is my version of a chopped salad, and I love the textural contrast of the crisp broccoli against the soft black beans and squeaky halloumi. The lime-and-spring-onion dressing makes everything sing, while the slightly bitter note of the charred corn keeps things interesting. A filling rainbow salad for warm days. Prep 15 min Cook 15 min Serves 2-3 2 tbsp olive oil300g tin sweetcorn, drained225g halloumi, cut into ½cm slices200g Tenderstem broccoli, cut into ½cm pieces400g tin black beans, drained and rinsedFinely grated zest and juice of 1 lime20ml extra-virgin olive oil1 tsp flaky sea salt 3 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced Put a tablespoon of oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan on a high heat. When it's almost smoking, add the sweetcorn (stand well back!), then fry, stirring occasionally, for five minutes, until charred all over (stand back when you stir, too, because it's going to try to pop at you like popcorn). Transfer the charred corn to a large bowl, then turn down the heat to medium, add the remaining tablespoon of oil and fry the halloumi for three minutes on each side, until well browned. Tip into the bowl with the sweetcorn. Meanwhile, put the broccoli and black beans in a bowl, cover with just-boiled water and leave to blanch for two minutes. Drain well and add to the sweetcorn bowl. In a small bowl, whisk the lime juice and zest, extra-virgin olive oil, sea salt and spring onions, then pour this dressing over the sweetcorn mix, toss to coat and serve warm.

John Lewis announces big shake-up across all 36 UK stores in bid to rival Next and M&S

JOHN Lewis has announced a big shake-up across all 36 of its UK stores in a bid to rival Next and M&S. The retailer will bolster its fashion offering to customers by adding 100 new menswear and womenswear clothing brands later this year. 1 The department-store chain will release its new premium collections this autumn in a bid to boost fashion sales. In what is expected to cause a fashion frenzy, the new additions will include an exclusive range of 25 bags and accessories from high-end handbag maker Mulberry. Other brands such as Akyn, By Malene Birger and Iro will also join the exciting new line-up. Customers will also be treated to new camping wear additions from Japan's Snowpeak and parkas from the popular Newcastle designer, Nigel Cabourn. John Lewis will also expand its own-label range too including its largest-ever cashmere range which is hoped to increase cashmere sales by 20 per cent. John Lewis currently stocks over 650 clothing brands overall. £800 million plan The move comes as the high-street giant drives forward with a wider £800 million turnaround. John Lewis last year pledged to inject more than £250million into its stores over two years as part of the restorations, which will pump a total of £800million into the John Lewis brand over the next four years. This has included refurbishing its stores and recruiting more shop floor staff while also investing in refreshing its Waitrose stores. The retailer added 49 new fashion brands earlier this year to bolster its spring / summer range. Nostalgic 90's retailer files for bankruptcy after chain misses rent payments for June and July Peter Ruis, who joined John Lewis last year as executive director, is overseeing the turnaround programme. With over 30 years of fashion experience at brands such as Jigsaw and Anthropologie, he said the new strategy would give customers "even more reasons to shop in our brilliant stores". He told The Telegraph that the "sky is the limit" when it comes to the retailer's hopes for boosting its fashion sales. Clothing revenues could more than double from £1.2 billion to £2.5 billion as a result of the retailer's fashion overhaul. It comes as Global Data figures indicate both Next and M&S have increased their share of the clothing and footwear market between 2019 and 2024. While John Lewis' market share has remained flat during that time at 1.5 per cent. Rachel Morgans, director of fashion at John Lewis, said the retailer is 'carefully curating a premium quality range that offers customers something different'. 'When it comes to brands, we're not chasing numbers, but focusing on those that appeal to our customers and offer something new," she added. They're likely to capture on additional spending too as M&S grapples with a recent cyber attack that crippled its online operations for weeks, according to Louise Deglise-Favre from Global Data. She said that it presents an "opportunity for John Lewis to capture some of its lost spending". Online orders were brought back six weeks later in June while click-and-collect resumed this month. Makeovers and credit card perks John Lewis has also kicked off the makeover of its nationwide beauty halls as part of the £800million investment. The retailer unveiled the new concept at its Liverpool store earlier this month, with five more set to open this year. There have been changes to John Lewis' credit card perks too. Since August 1, partnership credit card holders have seen their rewards reduced when shopping with other retailers. Previously, customers earned one point for every £4 spent at other stores, with each point converting into 1p and redeemable as gift vouchers for John Lewis and its sister brand, Waitrose. However, the spending threshold has now increased to £10, meaning customers need to spend more at other retailers or wait longer to accumulate rewards.
