Shooter opens fire at Reno casino, killing 3 and injuring several others

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A gunman opened fire Monday outside the largest casino in Reno, Nevada, killing three people and wounding three others before being taken into custody, officials said. Two victims were in critical condition, while the other had been released from the hospital, Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth said during a news conference Monday. The suspect had no known connection to the victims, police said, adding that the motive is unknown. The shooter walked up to the casino-hotel's valet parking area, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at a group of people, police said. His gun initially malfunctioned, but he quickly was able to get it to shoot. The suspect fled on foot through the parking lot where he encountered an armed casino security guard. Crawforth said the gunman opened fire on the guard, who returned fire as the shooter fled. The suspect also shot at someone driving by in the parking lot, striking and killing the driver. Officers arrived less than three minutes after the first shots rang out and fired at the suspect, police said in a statement. 'Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure,' Reno Police Department Chief Kathryn Nance said. The resort is one of Reno's most prominent venues, hosting concerts, sporting events and a campaign rally by President Donald Trump before the 2024 election. Near the California border and just northeast of Lake Tahoe, the town is a popular summer tourist destination. Hotel guests heard several shots coming from the resort's valet area around 7:30 a.m. Michael Sisco, 60, said he was in his room and about to head to the valet for his car when he heard popping sounds. He looked out his window and saw people screaming and running from the valet area. He said he saw a man holding his stomach and staggering before falling motionless next to a car. Sisco moved away from the window as the gunshots continued. 'A half hour after the incident I started shaking because I realized I could've been there,' he said. 'That's exactly where I was going.' Christina Martinez heard the shots just as she was stepping onto an elevator in the lobby, and they were still going off when she stepped out onto the 18th floor. Someone in a neighboring room told her there was a gunman right outside the main entrance, near where Martinez said she was getting coffee just moments before. 'I feel very blessed, but that's kind of why I had a panic attack,' she said. 'I was like, oh my God. I was just there.' Hours after the shooting, the entrance inside the casino leading to the valet area was roped off to guests and privacy screens were placed in front of the glass doors to block the view outside. In addition to those who were killed and the people taken to the hospital, three more were treated for minor injuries at the resort, according to Devon Reese, chair of the Board of Health in northern Nevada. One person was grazed by a bullet on their pinky finger, one was treated for severe anxiety and one was injured while running, he said. More than a year ago, two men were charged with fatally shooting another man who was staying at the resort in January 2024. The Grand Sierra claims to have the biggest casino floor in northern Nevada and sits just a few blocks from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. It's also one of the tallest buildings in the city, with nearly 2,000 hotel rooms. 'My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,' Reese said in a social media post. ___ Yamat reported from Las Vegas, Nevada. Shaikin: How the Emmanuel Clase betting probe could lead to fans losing an investment

With Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase under investigation for baseball betting, fans that bet a combined $315,000 on him could be at risk of losing some or all of that investment. Clase is the star attraction at Finlete, a San Diego company that offers fans the chance to invest in an athlete in exchange for a share of his future earnings. The future earnings of Clase, 27, a three-time All-Star, could be impacted by Monday's announcement that Major League Baseball had placed him on paid leave as part of what the league called a 'sports betting investigation.' The sport in question is baseball, according to an official familiar with the probe but unauthorized to discuss it publicly. Read more: Guardians' Emmanuel Clase placed on paid leave as part of MLB betting investigation In its offering statement, Finlete noted that Clase's current contract extends through 2026 and guarantees him at least $13.3 million, if the Guardians decline a 2027 buyout. The Guardians hold an option for $10 million in 2027 and another for $10 million in 2028. Clase would be eligible for free agency if the Guardians decline either option, or after the option years have been exercised. However, if the league determines Clase had bet on any baseball game in which his team participated, he could be declared permanently ineligible. If the league determines he had bet on any other baseball games, he could be banned for one year. On July 14, Finlete announced on Instagram that it had raised more than $315,000 from 'hundreds of investors in Emmanuel Clase's career.' In its offering, beyond the boilerplate warning that investors should not invest money they could not afford to lose, Finlete cited injuries, illnesses and work stoppages among risks that could derail payments to investors. Finlete also warned that players 'suspended or banned' from the league 'would not receive amounts under their existing player contract and may not be able to secure future playing contracts.' Read more: Historical Horse Racing machines key to the sport's future in California are in peril In his Clase sales pitch, Finlete co-founder Rob Connolly last year told Sportico: 'Mariano Rivera was the best ever. And this guy's in that conversation. So he's got a full career in front of him. How the hell did we land this deal? It's incredible.' Finlete spelled that out in its offering: If you really want to make the big bucks as investors, Clase needs to sign a lucrative extension, or hit free agency and strike gold. 'The profitability of the Clase Agreement is substantially dependent on Mr. Clase entering into additional high-value MLB player contracts,' the offering read. On its homepage, Finlete highlights seven baseball players with which it has agreements, Clase included. The other six are in the minor leagues. Connolly did not immediately return a message seeking comment. 2 Sailing Students Killed After Barge Strikes Their Boat off Miami Beach

Three other children and an adult woman received treatment at a local hospital following the incident, per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Two children at a sailing program died after their boat was struck by another vessel in Miami Beach on Monday, July 28. A total of six people were inside the sailboat when it was hit by a barge near Hibiscus Island around 11 a.m. local time, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release. Miami Beach Fire Rescue crews were the first to arrive and were later joined by rescue crews from local agencies, including Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Coast Guard Station Miami Beach. "All six individuals, an adult female and five juveniles, were recovered from the water and transported to a local hospital for treatment," the FWC said in a statement via X. "Tragically, two of the victims have succumbed to their injuries." Two children were in critical condition, said Coast Guard spokesman and Petty Officer Third Class Nicholas Strasburg, per The New York Times. Another child was seen by medics at the scene but did not go to the hospital. The children were between 8 and 12 years old, Lt. Pete Sanchez, a spokesman for the Miami Fire Rescue Department, said, per The Times. The sailboat was still "submerged" under the barge at the time of the U.S. Coast Guard's statement. The victims were students at the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation, the Miami Yacht Club confirmed in an Instagram statement Monday. The club said it was still "actively gathering all available facts" and prioritizing the safety of those involved. It is also cooperating with authorities amid the investigation. The identities of the victims have not been made public. "Our hearts are with the families of those lost and all who have been affected by this tragedy,' said Capt. Frank Florio, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami. 'Incidents like this leave a lasting impact on our maritime community and reinforce the importance of learning from every loss. The Coast Guard will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the causal factors and identify steps to help prevent similar tragedies in the future. We remain steadfast in our commitment to accountability, improvement, and the shared responsibility of ensuring safety at sea.'
