Rangers warned Club Brugge could dish out Champions League 'pasting' as ex Ibrox man points to one worrying issue

Daily Record16 hours ago
Russell Martin's side have conceded over 100 shots on goal in their six games this season
Rangers' deficiencies at the back could see their Champions League ambitions get ended in devastating style against Club Brugge, according to one former Ibrox defender.

Despite their 3-0 advantage from the first leg, Russell Martin 's men had a nervy night in the Czech Republic on Tuesday night, falling to a 2-1 defeat, and were it not for keeper Jack Butland, things would have got a lot more close for comfort.

The Light Blues have had over 100 shots against them in six matches in all competitions, with both of their clean sheets coming at home in the Champions League.

Gers already trail Celtic in the Premiership by four points after drawing their first two games and in the view of ex full back Richard Foster - they could be on the end of a hiding by Belgian outfit Brugge that will consign them to the Europa League for another season.
Speaking on GO Radio, he said: "I think they could get a pasting.
"If you give a team of the quality of Brugge those kind of chances, they'll score four of them.
"That then puts a whole different dynamic on the way Rangers are playing under Russell Martin.
"Against Panathinaikos I felt they gave up too many opportunities and had to rely on Jack Butland, which is fine as he's a goalkeeper and it's his job to make saves.

"But at some point, some teams are going to score more of those chances than miss.
"Rangers could be on the end of a pasting and that's why I think they will struggle against Brugge."
Boss Martin admitted in the wake of their progression in Plzen that his side needs to up their game if they want to get past the final qualification hurdle.

He stated: "If we don't show a bit more care and quality on the ball, I think we will struggle against anyone.
"I'm disappointed we lost and I'm disappointed with how many chances we gave up. I think so much of it comes from just being so loose with the ball.
"We were playing against a team who had nothing to lose, who really committed so many numbers, four on the top line, with a heavy press.
"We played through the press a lot in the first half, got into their final third a lot, then just turned the ball over."

Wayne Rooney makes Man Utd and title winner predictions as he sends Ruben Amorim message

Wayne Rooney has made his predictions for the 2025/26 Premier League season, with the Manchester United legend tipping his old side for a resurgence under Ruben Amorim Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has tipped Liverpool for the title and his old side for a Premier League resurgence under Ruben Amorim. However, he believes the Red Devils are one or two bodies short going into the new season. ‌ United kick off their season at home to Arsenal on Sunday and are eager to bounce back from a dismal 15th-place finish last season, which represented their worst Premier League campaign. But with new signings Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha bolstering their attack, there's a sense of optimism for a fresh start. ‌ Rooney, United's all-time leading scorer, believes his former employers will climb an impressive 10 places to secure a fifth-place finish by May. He made this prediction during a Match of the Day special edition preview (via the Manchester Evening News) alongside Kelly Cates, Danny Murphy and Julien Laurens ahead of the new season's kick-off. ‌ "I still think they [United] need one or two more signings," said the Old Trafford icon. "But I think you can see what Amorim is doing. I think it's looking better for Manchester United, and I think they will sneak into the top five. I hope they do, you never know." Laurens was quick to tease Rooney about his obvious bias given his 559 appearances for United. The Red Devils face a monumental challenge in regaining their Champions League credentials, especially after consecutive seasons of setting new records for new all-time worst league finishes. "Who did you play for again?" quipped Laurens, leaving Rooney and the rest of the panel in stitches over his potentially biased perspective. Despite his Everton and United roots, Rooney didn't let his loyalties cloud his judgement as he predicted Liverpool would retain their title. Moreover, he believes that if Arne Slot 's team manage to secure Isak, they're a sure bet for the crown. The Newcastle forward is currently at loggerheads with the club after it was revealed the Swede is determined he has played his last match for the Magpies, keenly awaiting another offer from Liverpool following a rejected £120million bid. "I already had Liverpool as favourites to win the title this year," Rooney admitted. "But if Isak comes in, then I think they're gonna be unstoppable. ‌ "The quality they've got, as Danny's just alluded [to], and I think a big thing was replacing Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. There's a lot of chances created, a lot of goals came from that side. I think [Jeremie] Frimpong has got the attributes to fill that, so I think Liverpool look strong." Rooney could only grin as he spoke the words, though it wasn't one of joy. Rather it seemed to pain the pundit to heap such praise on his old nemeses, regardless of how well-deserved the praise might be. ‌ Many pundits echo this sentiment as the new season approaches, especially with Liverpool bolstering their squad with talents like Florian Wirtz and Huge Ekitike. However, Slot's men may not find immediate success after Crystal Palace snatched the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday. Rooney also predicted Arsenal will secure the Premier League's runner-up spot for the fourth consecutive year. He also tipped Manchester City and Chelsea to round out the top four. John Terry gives up on manager dream as Chelsea icon left 'baffled' after snubs

John Terry has turned his back on the prospect of becoming a manager after growing tired of the lack of opportunities that have come his way as he settles into his job at Chelsea John Terry admits he's "done in terms of coaching" and will not be pursuing a career in management but concedes he remains baffled that no opportunities came his way - especially when he sees some of the names in jobs. ‌ The Chelsea icon enjoyed a stellar playing career, winning multiple Premier Leagues and the Champions League, but that didn't open up any doors for him when he considered going into the dugout post-retirement. ‌ After calling it a day as a player he quickly became part of the set-up at Aston Villa, where he'd seen out his playing days. There he worked under Dean Smith and helped the Midlands club land promotion via the Championship play-offs. ‌ Terry then worked under Smith again when he took on the job at Leicester. He interviewed for roles at Newcastle and in League One but has now wiped his hands with it and is more than happy with the gig he's landed himself at Chelsea. He told The Sun: 'I'm done in terms of coaching. I'm enjoying my life, I'm working in the Chelsea academy. My role's a part-time role, I love working with the kids, I love passing on my knowledge and experience to those boys.' Terry has seen a number of his former England team-mates go into jobs, some of them at heavyweight clubs, despite having no experience. Frank Lampard was initially manager at Derby and then got the Chelsea job before now finding himself at Coventry. Steven Gerrard was handed the reigns at Rangers and Aston Villa early in his managerial career. Wayne Rooney has also seen numerous jobs come his way and Terry insists he was hungry initially, but has grown frustrated as doors continue to remain closed. He said: 'I absolutely wanted it. When I went into Villa I got great experience under Dean Smith and we got promotion, which was incredible. As an assistant coach in the Premier League and the experience I've had as a player and an individual captain in both Chelsea and England, I thought that would be enough to get me a job. ‌ 'I'm not saying a job in the Premier League or the Championship — but a job at League One level. I didn't even get a sniff. I had interviews and it was just 'you have no experience'. When I see some people managing today, it baffles me, it really does. 'In terms of 'am I frustrated', yes, absolutely because I have a lot of good attributes to be a really good coach or a really good manager but, unfortunately, that's not happened.'

Celtic v Falkirk injury news: 6 out with Brendan Rodgers to make decision on trio for Premier Sports Cup tie

Celtic will look to progress to the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup as they welcome newly-promoted Falkirk to Celtic Park on Friday night (kick-off: 7.45pm). Winners of the competition for the last three seasons, Brendan Rodgers' side have started the campaign in a typically efficient fashion, beating St Mirren and Aberdeen in their opening two league games. They will be aiming to continue their winning start to the season against the Bairns and go a step closer to retaining the Premier Sports Cup trophy. As for their visitors, Falkirk, they head to Glasgow in need of a result after taking just one point from their first two games following promotion. Last weekend's 3-1 defeat to Livingston was disappointing for John McGlynn's side, but the cup will offer them a temporary rest-bite as they go in search of their first win of the season. The home side is expected to rotate ahead of next week's crucial Champions League qualifier against Kairat Almaty, with Shin Yamada, Anthony Ralston, Paulo Bernardo, and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey all in line to feature. Meanwhile, Falkirk has a number of injury issues heading into the game, with up to six first-teamers missing the game in Glasgow.
