After the defeat of Prithviraj Chauhan at Battle of Tarain in 1192, came the Sultanate, then the Mughals, the British and finally independence. All through this period, irrespective of which community did the ruler belong to, Delhi's cultural life continued to be a mosaic described earlier.
Thus it is very surprising that Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta could recommend renaming of Delhi Junction, popularly known as Old Delhi Railway station, after a Vaishya caste icon Maharaja Agrasen. According to newspaper reports she has written to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw saying, 'I am writing to respectfully request your kind consideration for renaming the Old Delhi Railway Station in honour of Maharaja Agrasen, a revered historical figure whose legacy has had a profound impact on the socio-economic development of India, particularly in Delhi.'
In the chronology of kings and dynasties which ruled Delhi, Maharaja Agrasen doesn't figure. He is part of the legend and believed to belong to the lineage of Lord Ram of Ayodhya, his 34th generation descendent. He is said to have adopted the Vanika dharma (trading duties) and the Vaishya community draws its lineage from him.

Chhattisgarh gets its first 14-member cabinet, 3 BJP MLAs inducted as ministers
RAIPUR: Three BJP MLAs on Wednesday took oath as ministers in Chhattisgarh, strengthening the cabinet from 11 to 14 members, which is the highest number ever in state. Governor Ramen Deka administered oath of office and secrecy to BJP legislators Gajendra Yadav, Rajesh Agrawal and Guru Khushwant Saheb at Raj Bhavan in presence of chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, assembly speaker Raman Singh and other ministers. This is the first time in past 25 years that Chhattisgarh cabinet has got 14 members as all previous cabinets had 13 members for a 90-member assembly. After the implementation of a 15% ceiling on the total strength of assembly and adopting the "Haryana model" that has 14 ministers in 90 member assembly, Chhattisgarh too decided to have 14 members in its cabinet. This full cabinet now has three tribals including CM, two Scheduled Caste, seven OBCs, one Brahmin and one Vaishya. Guru Khushwant Saheb who represents Aarang constituency, is from the influential and powerful Satnami family with the community up in arms since Baloda Bazar collectorate arson and violence case last year. Gajendra Yadav comes from Durg constituency, is son of the previous RSS state head and his non-inclusion in the first cabinet had surprised everyone. All stalwarts of BJP legislative party are left outside the cabinet as if they are designated to 'margdarshak mandal.' Raipur: Political activity has intensified in Chhattisgarh with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expected to expand his cabinet by Monday. On Saturday evening, Mr Sai met Governor Ramen Deka, a move being seen as a precursor to the swearing-in ceremony. According to sources, the BJP's top leadership has given a green signal for a 14-member cabinet. Two organizational leaders and one RSS-backed nominee are likely to be accommodated. At the same time, the existing ministers will retain their departments, quashing earlier speculation about reshuffling. The urgency stems from Mr Sai's scheduled visit to Japan and South Korea on Thursday. The oath ceremony of the new ministers is likely to be completed before his departure. Commenting on the development, Mr Sai said briefly, "Keep waiting, it can happen." Insiders suggest that the cabinet expansion may follow the Haryana model. Like Haryana, Chhattisgarh too has 90 assembly members. While only 13 ministers have traditionally been appointed since the state's formation, constitutional provisions allow up to 15 percent of the assembly strength to be in the council of ministers. This makes room for 14 ministers, including the Chief Minister. Currently, only 11 ministers are serving in the Sai cabinet after senior leader Brijmohan Agrawal's election as MP from Raipur. With three new appointments, the strength will reach the permissible limit of 14. The expansion is expected to balance caste equations, power centers, and regional representation. Prominent names being discussed include Amar Agrawal (Bilaspur), former three-time minister; Ajay Chandrakar (Raipur), former minister; Guru Khushwant Saheb (Arang MLA); Gajendra Yadav (Durg), associated with RSS; and Rajesh Agrawal (Ambikapur), who defeated former Deputy Chief Minister TS Singh Deo and represents the Vaishya community.

HC denies pre-arrest bail to man accused of replacing Tricolour on mosque with saffron flag
Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana high court on Saturday refused anticipatory bail to a man accused of removing the national flag from a mosque in Gurgaon and replacing it with a saffron flag. "The gravity of the offence and its potential impact on public order and communal peace cannot be overlooked. No extraordinary or exceptional circumstance has been brought on record by the petitioner that would warrant the grant of pre-arrest bail, particularly in light of the serious communal and constitutional implications of the alleged conduct," HC observed in its order. "The fact that a deeper and proper probe is required… This court is of the considered opinion that custodial interrogation of the petitioner is a must and no ground for granting anticipatory bail is made out," said Justice Manisha Batra in the order. The bench noted that the allegations against the petitioner were not vague or general in nature but "specific and substantiated by initial investigation", including purported conversations between the petitioner and co-accused when the alleged crime was being committed. It's alleged that on July 7, Tomar and some other persons removed the national flag from atop a mosque in Gurgaon's Uton village and erected a saffron flag. Some of the accused even threw away the national flag, says the complaint. The complainant provided a video recording of the incident to police, alleging the co-accused had removed the Indian flag in connivance with Tomar. However, Tomar's counsel, while seeking anticipatory bail, argued that he was falsely implicated and had no role to play in the incident. Opposing the plea, the counsel for the state and the complainant submitted that the accused intended to stir communal tension and that he is shown to have had a conversation with the co-accused when they were involved in removing the national flag and hoisting the saffron flag. After hearing all the parties, HC dismissed the plea for anticipatory bail, keeping in view the nature of allegations and the fact that there were no exceptional circumstances for pre-arrest bail.
