Pak-US joint strike on the drug trade
Pakistan and the United States on Friday agreed to make exchange of information more effective in the fields of counterterrorism and counter-narcotics in yet another sign of deepening security cooperation between the two sides.
The development came during a meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and US Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory LoGerfo at the Ministry of Interior.
Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry, Acting US Ambassador Natalie Baker and Federal Interior Secretary were also present on the occasion.
An official handout issued here by the Interior Ministry said during the meeting, both sides agreed to further enhance Pakistan-US relations especially in the areas of counterterrorism, border security, and anti-narcotics.
They also agreed to make the exchange of information more effective in the fields of counterterrorism and counter-narcotics.
Naqvi said that since President Donald Trump's administration came into power, the Pakistan-US relations have improved significantly.
He commended President Trump's sincere efforts for global peace and noted that transparency, mutual trust, and cooperation are the hallmarks of the bilateral relationship. He emphasized that this is an excellent opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations in all areas.
The interior minister added that counterterrorism dialogue will help in creating a joint strategy. He termed the US decision to designate the banned BLA and banned Majeed Brigade foreign terrorist organisations a commendable step, expressing hope that Pakistan-US cooperation will yield positive results in eliminating terrorism.
Gregory LoGerfo acknowledged Pakistan's geo-strategic importance. He also expressed condolences over the loss of lives in terrorist attacks.
The meeting came against the backdrop of recent a move by the US to designate BLA and Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO). The move was a major diplomatic win for Pakistan.
Earlier this week, Pakistan and the United States pledged to deepen counterterrorism cooperation, with a renewed focus on tackling terrorist groups including the BLA, ISIS-Khorasan and the TTP.
But what was significant in the joint statement issued after the latest round of counterterrorism dialogue held in Islamabad was that it was for the first time the US agreed to work together with Pakistan to tackle groups such as the outlawed BLA.
The two countries regularly hold counterterrorism dialogue but never before the joint statement made mention of terrorist groups such as the BLA.

Lebanon 'will have no life if state moves against Hezbollah'

PHOTO: REUTERS Hezbollah raised the spectre of civil war with a warning on Friday there would be "no life" in Lebanon if the government sought to confront or eliminate the Iran-backed group. The government wants to control arms in line with a US-backed plan following Israel's military campaign against Hezbollah, which was founded four decades ago with the backing of Tehran's Revolutionary Guards. But the group is resisting pressure to disarm, saying that cannot happen until Israel ends its strikes and occupation of a southern strip of Lebanon that had been a Hezbollah stronghold. "This is our nation together. We live in dignity together, and we build its sovereignty together — or Lebanon will have no life if you stand on the other side and try to confront us and eliminate us," its leader Naim Qassem said in a televised speech. Israel has dealt Hezbollah heavy blows in the last two years, killing many of its top brass, including former leader Hassan Nasrallah, and 5,000 of its fighters and destroying much of its arsenal. Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said that Qassem's statements carried an implicit threat of civil war, calling them "unacceptable". "No party in Lebanon is authorised to bear arms outside the framework of the Lebanese state," Salam said in a post on X carrying his statements from an interview with the pan-Arab Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper. The Lebanese cabinet last week tasked the army with confining weapons only to state security forces, a move that has outraged Hezbollah. Qassem accused the government of implementing an "American-Israeli order to eliminate the resistance, even if that leads to civil war and internal strife". However, he said Hezbollah and the Amal movement had decided to delay any street protests while there was still scope for talks. "There is still room for discussion, for adjustments, and for a political resolution before the situation escalates to a confrontation no one wants," Qassem said. "But if it is imposed on us, we are ready, and we have no other choice ... At that point, there will be a protest in the street, all across Lebanon, that will reach the American embassy." The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which left parts of Lebanon in ruins, erupted in October 2023 when the group opened fire at Israeli positions along the southern border in solidarity with its Palestinian ally Hamas at the start of the Gaza war.

European shares log second weekly gain, focus on Trump-Putin talks
FRANKFURT: European shares came off multi-month highs on Friday, as declines in heavyweight tech and financial shares offset gains from some corporate earnings, while investors monitored a crucial US-Russia summit. The pan-European STOXX 600 index closed 0.1% lower, after hitting a near five-month high earlier in the session. Investor focus was on a meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska later in the day that investors hope could pave the way for a resolution of the Ukraine conflict. Trump said he would not negotiate on behalf of Ukraine and would let Kyiv decide whether to engage in territorial swaps with Russia. Analysts at Jefferies said that any progress towards de-escalation could benefit consumer, construction, materials and growth-oriented sectors, which have been relatively underinvested in Europe. Aerospace and defence stocks fell 0.8% ahead of the summit. Steve Sosnick, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers, said: 'Barring something truly outrageous - positive or negative - markets are not necessarily treating it (US-Russia summit) as important from a market point of view.' Technology stocks fell 0.6%, weighing on the STOXX 600 index. ASML, the world's biggest supplier of computer chip-making equipment, fell 1% after US peer Applied Materials lowered its fourth-quarter earnings forecast due to weak demand in China and impacts from tariff uncertainty. The Dutch firm had issued a similar warning in mid-July, saying it might not achieve its 2026 growth forecast. Chip stocks BE Semiconductor and ASMI dropped 3.3% and 2.8%, respectively. On the flip side, miners were the top gainers, adding 0.8%. Antofagasta rose 1.2% after a jump in half-year core earnings on Thursday, helping peers, including Anglo American. Healthcare shares, which have taken a beating this year from uncertainty around Trump's pharma tariffs, were on track for a recovery. The healthcare index logged its seventh consecutive session of gains, its longest streak since late January.

PM reiterates support for CPEC's industrial component
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to advancing the industrial component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), underscoring the country's intent to leverage China's expertise and progress in the textile sector. During a meeting with a delegation from Chinese garments firm Challenge Fashion Private Limited, led by Chairman Huwang Weiguo, the prime minister announced that a China-Pakistan Business-to-Business conference would soon be held in China. The event aims to foster collaboration between private enterprises from both countries. Briefing the Prime Minister, Huwang Weiguo highlighted that Challenge Fashion Group has invested $17 million in Pakistan since 2014 and is currently establishing a state-of-the-art textile industry within the country. The group is also developing a special economic zone (SEZ) in Pakistan, with planned investments of $100 million over five years. This initiative is projected to generate exports worth $400 million. Following the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif inaugurated the Challenge Fashion Group's special economic zone. Addressing the delegation, Sharif described the China-Pakistan friendship as unique and resilient, noting that the two nations have consistently supported each other through challenges. He expressed the government's eagerness to elevate bilateral ties to new heights, particularly through enhanced economic cooperation. 'The growth in economic relations between China and Pakistan is a source of great satisfaction. We encourage Chinese industries to establish operations in Pakistan,' Sharif said. He also commended Challenge Fashion Group for its confidence in the Pakistani market. Highlighting the strategic importance of the SEZ, Sharif said it would facilitate technology transfer, skill development, and sustainable industrial growth. He directed all relevant authorities to extend full support and provide necessary facilities to the Challenge Group. The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal, Federal Minister for Information Ataullah Tarar, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, Federal Minister for Power Division Awais Leghari, along with other senior government officials.
