
Google says hackers breached one of its databases
Why it matters: Even Google isn't completely resilient against the wave of social engineering attacks targeting major businesses this year.
Driving the news: In a blog post late Tuesday, Google said that a group commonly known as ShinyHunters had broken into the database, which stored contact information and "related notes for small and medium businesses."
The hackers had access to the database for "a small window of time before the access was cut off," Google added, and they mostly made off with information that was "basic and largely publicly available business information."
The big picture: ShinyHunters is a cybercriminal group known for breaking into organizations via social engineering.
In most schemes, they'll impersonate a company's IT support desk using voice phishing techniques and trick an employee into resetting their password.
ShinyHunters also tricks these employees into authorizing the installation of a malicious application onto their systems that the hackers then use to access and exfiltrate sensitive information.
After ShinyHunters extracts the data, they will call or email employees — often months after the fact — and demand a ransom payment to prevent the publication of the stolen information.
Catch up quick: So far this year, ShinyHunters has been linked to a series of data breaches at Australian airline Qantas, insurer Allianz Life, Louis Vuitton and Adidas.
What to watch: It is unclear if Google faced a ransom demand for the stolen data.

Warby Parker Announces Second Quarter 2025 Results

Second Quarter 2025 Year Over Year Financial Results Net revenue increased $26.3 million, or 13.9%, to $214.5 million. Active Customers increased 9.0% to 2.60 million on a trailing 12-month basis, and Average Revenue per Customer increased 4.6% to $316. Gross margin was 53.0% compared to 56.0% in the prior year. The decrease in gross margin was driven by $2.5 million of one-time inventory write-downs primarily related to the decision to sunset our Home-Try On program at the end of this year, as well as sales growth of contact lenses, increased store occupancy and doctor headcount, and tariff related costs, partially offset by the benefit from selective price increases and increased penetration of our higher priced frames and lenses. Selling, general, and administrative expenses ('SG&A') were $118.1 million, up $3.8 million from the prior year, and represented 55.1% of revenue, down from 60.8% in the prior year. As a percentage of revenue, SG&A decreased primarily due to leverage from lower stock-based compensation and corporate expenses. Adjusted SG&A (1) was $104.8 million, or 48.9% of revenue, compared to $98.2 million, or 52.2% of revenue in the prior year. Net loss improved $5.0 million to $1.8 million, primarily as a result of leveraging our expense base on higher revenue. Stephen Schenck / Android Authority Summer's been going by so fast, it's hard to believe that we're already down to just two weeks to go until Google's August 20 event, where we're expecting to see the company introduce the Pixel 10 series, the Pixel Watch 4, and some new Pixel Buds. As that date keeps creeping up on us, we're learning more and more about what we're likely to get. Some of it sounds great, like the full-featured Qi2 magnetic charging support, while we're a little bummed by other developments, like word that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold might not hit stores until October. While those are important details, granted, with the event so palpably close even those are starting to feel overshadowed by the tone of general excitement that's consuming us. After all, this isn't just about some fresh new hardware — Google is going to want to sell us on the experience these devices deliver, and that's going to mean showing off new software features, hyping up creative tools, and all the fun and showmanship that a launch like this calls for. Alright, so cool? That will probably be really neat to experience two weeks from now? So what? Well, on Tuesday Google just introduced its latest Gemini tool, with the AI system picking up the ability to easily generate illustrated storybooks. We already had a bit of fun imagining some fictional Android Authority offices, but it felt like this feature has even more potential. Gemini lets you steer the story in any direction you want, accepts file uploads for adding richness to the world it creates, and supports revisions to help tweak things just right. That got us thinking: If we feed Gemini everything we know about Google's plans for the Pixel 10 launch, could it put together a story of what we're likely to expect? We prompted Gemini with a PDF full of Pixel 10 rumors, along with a general description of Google's upcoming event and our own plans for covering it. Gemini's first draft was in the right ballpark, but needed a bit of tweaking. To an extent, Gemini's storybook tool feels resistant to taking too many notes. We were able to insert our own C. Scott Brown into the story easily enough (or, at least, someone wearing his glasses) but Gemini didn't like our attempt to correct Rick Osterloh's job title. Then there are the hallucinations, from a Pixel with a several-generations-old camera bar … in the middle of the screen, to a Pixel 10 Pro Fold that looks like one of those origami fortune tellers.
