Harimau Malaya battle to 1-1 draw against Cape Verde

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia showcased resilience and determination, holding world No. 72 Cape Verde to a 1-1 draw in a Tier 1 international football friendly at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras last night.
Substitute striker Paulo Josue equalised in the 79th minute, salvaging Harimau Malaya's honour in front of home fans, after defender Sidny Lopes Cabral had put Cape Verde ahead early in the first half.
In their first competitive meeting, coach Peter Cklamovski underscored the importance of local talent, fielding seven homegrown players in the starting XI, while newly naturalised player Gabriel Palmero made his Malaysia debut.
Malaysia, ranked 131st in the world, had an early warning shot, as Palmero's long-range effort struck the post in the seventh minute. However, Cape Verde took the lead a minute later, with Cabral beating Daniel Ting before firing a powerful shot past goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed.
Cape Verde then dominated possession, launching a series of attacks, forcing Malaysia's defensive duo—captain Matthew Davies and Ahmad Syihan—to work tirelessly.
On resumption, Malaysia nearly equalised in the 61st minute, but goalkeeper Josimar Dias cleared Faisal's powerful shot, with Muhammad Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili unable to convert the rebound.
Minutes later, Arif Aiman narrowly missed scoring, as his one-on-one attempt struck Dias' foot in the 69th minute.
Malaysia finally broke through in the 79th minute, as Josue calmly finished off a pass from Quentin Cheng to level the score. The striker had another golden chance in the 86th minute, but his close-range shot was blocked by the alert Dias.
Harimau Malaya will face Cape Verde again in a closed-door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 3.
These matches serve as preparation for Malaysia's crucial 2027 Asian Cup Qualifier against Vietnam on June 10 at Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Malaysia and Vietnam currently lead Group F with three points each after a match played.– BERNAMA

Harimau issue statement after 3-0 loss to Cape Verde

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a closed door match and an eye-opener for the national football team. Malaysia lost 3-0 to Cape Verde at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday, and the game did little to bolster the team's confidence for the Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam. On target for Cape Verde were Dailon Livramento who scored in the 35th and 48th minutes and Heriberto Tavares in the 55th. On May 29, world No. 131 Malaysia drew 1-1 with word No. 72 Cape Verde at the KLFA Stadium. Harimau Malaya said in a statement that the friendlies against the West African nation were to gear up for the match against Vietnam at Bukit Jalil on June 10. "With several players having gone nearly six weeks without competitive football, this training match served a key purpose in providing valuable minutes across the entire squad to focus on match sharpness, conditioning, and improve physical intensity," read the statement. "The match was played in three 30-minute periods to ensure all players saw action — an important part of the national team's build-up to June 10." National coach Peter Cklamovski has called up five overseas-based heritage players — Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Jon Irazabal and Joao Figueiredo — to join the centralised training. The new faces are expected to boost the team for the must-win match against bitter rivals Vietnam.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie cruised into the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Open after defeating home duo Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah today. The world No 5 defeated the 25th-ranked Indonesian pair 21-12, 21-17 in a match lasting 33 minutes. A tougher challenge now awaits the Malaysian husband-and-wife team, who have booked a last-eight clash with Thailand's world No 6 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran tomorrow. Dechapol-Supissara have been in strong form at all the BWF tournaments this year. Soon Huat and Shevon are still chasing their first title of the season, having fallen short in the early rounds at most tournaments. Their best result so far was reaching the semi-finals of the India Open in January. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
