‘There will be an aftermath, but I'm not worried' – Didier Deschamps on France departure

Yahoo13-03-2025

France boss Didier Deschamps has said that the announcement of his departure following the 2026 World Cup has 'not changed anything' during his reveal of the 24-man Les Bleus squad that will face Croatia in the Nations League quarter-finals at the end of March. It was the first time that Deschamps has appeared before the press as France manager after making his announcement at the start of January. The 2018 World Cup winner qualified his comments on his future as a 'non-announcement' during his press conference transcribed by Get French Football News. 'It hasn't changed anything at all, for me it wasn't a big announcement. It's very good that it is like that.''I have the same energy, and determination to keep the French national team at the level that it has been for years. There will be an aftermath, but I'm not worried about that for the moment. I want to maintain the same determination and keep performing well.'GFFN | George Boxall

Spain lose final despite Merino penalty & Zubimendi goal

Portugal won the UEFA Nations League on Sunday despite Arsenal's Mikel Merino converting a penalty for Spain and Gunners target Martin Zubimendi scoring early on. Photo byArsenal fans had quite a few players to keep an eye on in the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain on Sunday, but almost exclusively from the Spanish side of the field. Advertisement Mikel Merino and David Raya were both in the matchday squad, though neither started the game. Merino came on in the 75th minute, whilst Raya was an unused substitute. Martin Zubimendi has been heavily linked with Arsenal, and he was involved from the start, whilst another rumoured target in Nico Williams also started. Photo byZubimendi opened the scoring in the final, driving his team forwards before capitalising on a loose ball in the penalty area for 1-0. Portugal's Nuno Mendes equalised in the 26th minute, Spain's Mikel Oyarzabal retook the lead in the 45th, but Portugal bounced back again through Cristiano Ronaldo to level the game at 2-2 just after the hour mark. Advertisement After that, Merino was introduced, but the Arsenal 28-year-old couldn't break the deadlock in the remainder of normal time and extra time. The contest went to penalties. Photo byMerino stepped up first for Spain, converting with a confident spot-kick to send the goalkeeper the wrong way. But Portugal came out on top as Alvaro Morata was the only player to fail to convert.

Manchester City to propose improved bid for Lyon's Rayan Cherki

Manchester City are set to improve their offer to Olympique Lyonnais for Rayan Cherki (21), according to a report from Fabrizio Romano. It was reported by Sacha Tavolieri that Manchester City's opening offer was rejected by Lyon after it fell short of their €35-40 million valuation of the France international. Tavolieri wrote that Manchester City only offered €23 million. An improved bid was expected, with Cherki being the Premier League side's priority target as they look for a new playmaker. Advertisement Romano explains that talks between Lyon and Manchester City have restarted, with Cherki very keen to join the English club. It's been previously reported that Cherki has already agreed on personal terms with Manchester City and had spoken to Pep Guardiola about the project. Cherki recently became a France international for the first time, earning his debut and scoring against Spain in the Nations League semi-final defeat (5-4). He also made an appearance in the third-place playoff victory against Germany (2-0). GFFN | Nick Hartland
