Here's what Joe Milton being named starter says about Cowboys WR position
Joe Milton getting the start in the Cowboys' third and final preseason game was certainly…a decision. After underwhelming in nearly every capacity in the first two games, many felt it was time to see more Will Grier or maybe even the starter, Dak Prescott. Yet, Dallas triple-downed with their hyper talented and dangerously undeveloped prospect, leaving many confused. There's no question Milton needs reps. From practice reps to game reps, Milton needs it all. The 25-year-old from Tennessee has unteachable arm talent and high-end athleticism. The start on Friday is good for Milton but unfortunately the same can't be said for the rest of the players forced to play around him. In previous contests, Milton repeatedly missed open targets, delivered late passes and generally stunted the offense. It wasn't just frustrating from a team perspective but also from an evaluation perspective. It was exceedingly difficult to evaluate receivers because passes just weren't getting to them. The Cowboys appear to have a competitive battle underway at the WR position this summer. CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and KaVontae Turpin are locked into roles but players like Jalen Tolbert, Jonathan Mingo, Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Cropper, Jalen Brooks and Traeshon Holden are all jockeying for position. With only two or three additional roster spots up for grabs, good players are going to miss the cut. And evaluating these WRs is next to impossible with the way Milton has been playing in the preseason. The only reasonable conclusion to arrive at is the Cowboys' coaching staff and front office already feels they know what they need to know at the WR position. Unlike fans and media, they've had full access to every single practice rep and exercise through training camp. They know how they want to build their roster, they know who will help on special teams and who needs development on the practice squad. They don't need the rest of the world seeing in a preseason game. The decision to start Milton in the third preseason game is likely strategic in more than one way.
