Naela El Attar: Shaping Egypt's golf future from the heart of Cairo

Khaleej Times22-04-2025
Naela El Attar, Head of Golf at The Allegria Golf Club in Cairo, Egypt, is one of the most influential women in the Arab golf world.
Egyptian-born and golf-obsessed since the age of four, Naela's life story is tightly woven into the fairways of her homeland.
'My story in golf is my life story,' she said. 'It started when I was just four years old. My father took me to Alexandria Sporting Club—the only 18-hole course in the country at the time. There were only two other shorter courses back then, at Mena House and Gezira Club.'
At just seven years old, Naela made a bold declaration to her parents: she wanted to become a golf professional. 'They were surprised—but it was all about being outdoors.,' she said. 'That dream still holds true today. I'm learning every single day.'
Her journey has taken her from the top of Egypt's amateur game to studying and playing professionally in the United States, and finally back home—where she now leads operations at one of the country's most prestigious clubs.
Opened in 2010 under the Troon Golf management brand, and designed by Greg Norman, The Allegria Golf Club is a flagship for golf in the region. 'Norman's design is a major draw,' she says. 'People come back again and again—it's truly special.'
Naela's amateur career saw her represent Egypt on multiple fronts. She won the African Ladies Championship in Zambia (2006) and the Arab Ladies Championship at Soma Bay, also playing in the Mediterranean Games and the Espirito Santo Trophy (World Amateur Team Championships) in South Africa and Puerto Rico.
A standout memory? 'Definitely The R&A Junior Open in 2002 at Royal Musselburgh, Scotland. We even visited The Open at Muirfield, watched Ernie Els win, toured behind the scenes—it changed my life.'
Her father, Vice-President of the Egyptian Golf Federation and the first Egyptian national to be a member of The R&A, was a major influence. 'His passion helped fuel mine.'
After studying Hospitality Management in Egypt, she enrolled at the Golf Academy of America in San Diego, playing on development tours including the Ladies European Tour's Dubai Ladies Masters. 'There were ups and downs—especially when I suffered a neck injury, never ideal for a pro athlete,' she recalls.
She also worked at Torrey Pines during the 2008 Buick Open and US Open. 'Watching Tiger Woods from inside the ropes? Unforgettable.' Later, she began teaching juniors in Sacramento Valley, but family obligations brought her back to Egypt regularly.
After nine years in the US, Naela earned her PGA of America status in 2015 and returned to Cairo full-time. Impressed by Allegria's facilities and tech-forward approach, she joined the club and quickly rose from teaching pro to Head of Golf in 2021.
'I was blown away by the investment in technology—it reminded me of the US. It made me want to be part of this.'
Allegria now has over 250 members, up from fewer than 100 just five years ago. Golf rounds have more than doubled, and the 25–35 age group is rapidly embracing the game. 'They come in groups, which enhances the entire experience—it's a fresh energy.'
Looking ahead, Naela is optimistic. 'The upcoming Marriott hotel on-site will change our dynamics entirely. We're also targeting international growth. We're attending the IAGTO conference in Gran Canaria next month to put Egypt on the global golf map.'
'The potential here is huge,' she adds. 'With world-class courses, deep history, and the right partners, Egypt is ready to become a must-visit golf destination.'

Big-ticket events set the stage for tourism growth in the Middle East

According to the ATM Travel Trends report, 50% of industry experts consider leisure events as a key opportunity for the region's tourism growth Experts speaking at ATM 2025 discussed how global sports tournaments, cultural festivals and music events across the region are boosting tourism and economic growth Dubai, United Arab Emirates: 'Big-ticket' events are playing a pivotal role in driving international tourism and accelerating economic growth, according to experts speaking recently at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025. In the GCC alone, the event and exhibition market is expected to reach US$827 million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 3.94%. Following the global success of mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and Expo 2020 Dubai, momentum is building across the region as Saudi Arabia prepares to host the 2034 World Cup. Discussing the evolution and impact of these events, panellists including H.E. Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; Sebastien Doussin, Senior Vice President - Global Travel Services & Destination Management. Dnata and Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO, Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), shared fascinating insights at ATM 2025, where the events industry was under the spotlight. The panel addressed how big-ticket events – so-called for their high value, cost and impact – have demonstrated their ability to attract millions of international visitors, boost hotel occupancy, stimulate infrastructure growth and generate long-term brand positioning for host destinations. Highlighting the importance of understanding the long-term strategic value of big-ticket events beyond immediate sales, H.E. Khalid Jassim Al Midfa commented: ' Big-ticket events provide a destination with an opportunity to establish brand positioning and exposure in a competitive global environment. These events play a vital role in supporting broader government objectives, but it is essential to invest in the right product for your destination.' Doussin reaffirmed the importance of large-scale events in destination positioning, referencing the growth of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the surge of international golfing tournaments throughout the UAE and the launch of NBA events in the capital. Commenting on the impact of technology on events, Doussin said: 'Technology has already changed big-ticket events, especially in terms of distribution and customer experience. All of the ticketing for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar was completely digital through the official event app, offering flexibility and ease of use. Ultimately, technology enables an event to become more seamless, easier and enjoyable.' Meanwhile, Hamid urged the industry to broaden the definition of big-ticket events to include exhibitions, conferences and cultural performances. He referenced Bangkok's weekly concerts, which are mainly K-pop driven, as examples of how live entertainment extends tourist stays. Supporting the panel's observations, the ATM Travel Trends report highlights the rising appeal of live entertainment and sports in influencing travel decisions. Leisure events were outlined as the top opportunity for tourism growth among 50% of industry experts, as consumer demand for in-person and cultural experiences has increased significantly in recent years. The trend of combining traditional leisure and business travel, or 'bleisure', has also accelerated as increased remote working and flexible working visas have enabled more people to live and work overseas. Building on this, business travellers are often extending their stays in destinations, creating a new opportunity in this rapidly expanding sector. The report also highlighted that business events (MICE) are emerging as a significant driver of tourism growth across the Middle East, complementing the region's thriving leisure sector. Global business travel reached a record US$1.4 trillion in 2024 and is projected to rise to US$2 trillion by 2030. The Middle East is well-positioned to capture a growing share of this lucrative market, increasing from approximately 2.5% in 2024 to over 3% by the end of the decade, supported by world-class infrastructure, a strategic location, and an expanding schedule of high-profile events. Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, concluded: 'As big-ticket events continue to gain global prominence, their role in shaping the future of tourism, driving economic diversification and enhancing international reputation has never been more evident. The Middle East, with its strategic vision, world-class infrastructure and focus on innovation, is well-positioned to lead the next era of global event tourism.' Chimaev wins UFC middleweight championship

UAE's Khamzat Chimaev has become the new UFC middleweight champion after a dominant display against title holder Dricus Du Plessis during the UFC 319 at the United Center in Chicago. Considered a battle between the undefeated UFC middleweights, Du Plessis put his belt on the line for the third time on Saturday against Chimaev, the No 3-ranked contender and considered one of the most feared pound-for-pound fighters on the UFC roster. Chimaev scored a unanimous decision victory on the judges' scorecards, smothering Du Plessis with his grappling, with all three judges scoring the fight 50 to 44 in his favour. Apart from the last couple of minutes of the final round, the Chechen-born Chimaev, who began training in MMA while living in Sweden before moving to Abu Dhabi and fighting under the flag of the UAE, utterly smothered his South African opponent. Despite being the champion, Du Plessis came into the fight as the betting underdog and it quickly became apparent why. Having built his career on his suffocating wrestling, the 31-year-old Chimaev immediately took the champion down and the punishment began. In all, Chimaev fired off a whopping 567 strikes over the course of five five-minute rounds, landing a stunning 529 of them. Du Plessis managed a mere 68, and landed only 45. Chimaev took the fight to the mat with a double-leg takedown and then advanced to a crucifix position, trapping the right arm of Du Plessis with his legs and lying across his opponent's torso to control his other arm. That left Du Plessis almost defenceless as Chimaev fired short left hands at his head, knowing that one wrong move by the man on the bottom while trying to escape could put him in a worse position, or even see him knocked out. To his credit Du Plessis, who is also 31, never quit but by the end of the third round he was so far behind on the scorecards that he needed a finish. He somehow found the energy to go on the offensive in the final two minutes of the fight, but to no avail. The UFC had a number of middleweight contenders sitting cage-side, and their only consolation as they watched the brutal beat-down of Du Plessis and Chimaev's coronation might have been that he didn't manage to finish the fight early with a violent knockout or submission. If that is indeed his only flaw, none of them will be heading to the gym on Monday morning and relishing the prospect of facing the new champion and challenging him for the belt.
