UHC honors donors and their families for National Donate a Life Month

Yahoo29-03-2025

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — On Friday morning, the United Hospital Center celebrated the start of the National Donate Life Month with a special flag raising event alongside the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE).
The annual event honored all donors and their families, including four families whose loved one became donors.
In 2024, more than 900 life-saving organ transplants were done in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

One mother, Sharon Smith, shared her daughter Abigail's story of being a donor after a tragic accident. Abigail's donation ended up saving five lives and helping two blind people regain vision.
'Through those people she can live on, and as a mom it's very humbling to know that her heart is still beating, and her lungs are still breathing and that she's affected so many different lives by just being selfless,' Smith said.
Hospital and CORE officials said it's important for families to have a conversation about their wishes to become a donor. Jeremy Zeiders, WV Designated Requester for CORE explained further.
'The misconception of doctors not saving your life if you're in the position to be a donor is a falsehood,' Zeiders said. 'CORE is not notified until the family makes that decision to withdraw care or until that patient meets a certain criteria which means that they can likely not recover and it is still—we don't talk to the family until the family makes the decision that withdrawal is what they would like to do.'

LivaNova completes epilepsy treatment study of VNS Therapy

LivaNova has completed the CORE-VNS study, assessing outcomes via real-world evidence on the use of the VNS Therapy device in over 800 individuals with epilepsy. The study's final 36-month data confirms the therapy's effectiveness on severe focal seizures in paediatric and adult patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), showing early and sustained benefits. This open-label, long-term study enrolled participants from 61 sites around the world. The majority of the subjects, across all age groups, reported focal onset seizures with impaired awareness (FIA) as their most disabling seizure type. According to the study's data, for children aged four to 18, there was an 87% median reduction in FIA motor seizures at 36 months. Inclusive of adults, 34% of subjects with FIA motor seizures achieved 100% seizure minimisation, with an overall median decrease of 80%. Similarly, focal to bilateral tonic-clonic (FBTC) seizures saw a median reduction of 100% in children, and 49% of all participants with FBTC seizures reported complete seizure minimisation at their three-year study visit. VNS Therapy's effectiveness was observed as early as three months post-implantation, with further substantial decreases in both FIA and FBTC seizures observed at subsequent 12-, 24-, and 36-month visits. Notably, the CORE-VNS study claimed to have a high patient retention rate of 82% over the three-year follow-up period. LivaNova noted that VNS Therapy is an add-on treatment designed to decrease the seizure frequency in individuals aged four and above with DRE and partial-onset seizures. Involving an outpatient procedure, the implantation of this therapy does not involve skull penetration. The outcomes of the 36-month CORE-VNS study are set to be published later in the year. LivaNova Global Medical Affairs vice-president Kathryn Nichol said: 'LivaNova is deeply committed to advancing epilepsy research and in every study of VNS Therapy to date, we continue to see that effectiveness can be achieved early and continue to improve month by month and visit by visit. This remained true over the course of three years in CORE-VNS.' Last year, the company reported positive predictive outcomes from the OSPREY study of the aura6000 hypoglossal nerve stimulator system for treating obstructive sleep apnoea. Advocates help raise awareness in Harrison County for Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month

CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — June is Alzheimer's and brain awareness month, and here in West Virginia, more than 38,000 people aged 65 and older have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or some sort of dementia, according to the Alzheimer's Impact Movement. And as the age of people diagnosed is decreasing, general concern is increasing. Advocates of the cause are helping raise awareness of Alzheimer's and brain health by speaking with local city councils. These advocates were granted a proclamation on behalf of the Harrison County Commission in its meeting on Wednesday, the Clarksburg City Council on Thursday, and will receive one from the Bridgeport City Council on Friday. 12 News spoke with Bill O'Field, Mission Chairman of the North Central Walk to End Alzheimer's, who spoke with doctors from the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute on what some of the key signs of dementia and Alzheimer's may look like. Harrison County commissioners split on future of Sunset Ellis property 'It's normal in the aging process to maybe forget a name or forget where you put your car keys, but then you find them. And maybe later in the day, the seniors say, 'but then I remember that name when I get home. The doctor said that's good.' That's just the normal aging process taking place. But it's when you can't cook for yourself, you don't know how to do your laundry, those are the true signs of Alzheimer's,' said O'Field. O'Field also mentioned to be wary of weight loss and depression, and to maintain a healthy diet and exercise, as a healthy body can help result in a healthy mind. The Harrison County Senior Center offers an Alzheimer's support group in its boardroom at 10 a.m. on the second Thursday of each month. You can call 304-623-6795 for more information. The North Central Walk to End Alzheimer's will also be held on Oct. 5 this year at the Meadowbrook Mall with registration beginning at 1 p.m. and the ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. For more information about Alzheimer's and local resources, you can call 800-272-3900 or click here. All of West Virginia under Air Quality Alert Thursday

CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — Smoke from wildfires in Canada prompted an Air Quality Alert across West Virginia Thursday. The alert was issued by the National Weather Service early Thursday afternoon and will remain in effect until 10 p.m. As of 2:30 p.m., most of West Virginia and most of the Northeast had moderate air quality conditions, which can impact unusually sensitive groups. According to the alert, some areas of West Virginia may experience a period where air quality dips down to the 'orange' level, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. No surrounding states have similar alerts. 'Explosion' reported during fire at Hamer Pellet plant in Elkins Parts of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin were experiencing unhealthy air quality conditions, but only some parts of Canada were seeing air quality in the very unhealthy or hazardous range because of the smoke. The biggest impact West Virginia has seen from the smoke this week is a haze that has lingered across the Mountain State for a few days. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
