Disability Action Center breaks ground new Fairmont recreation center

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — The Disability Action Center (DAC) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday at the site of the upcoming Wilfong Wellness Center in Fairmont. DAC officials told 12 News that the center will provide a place for people with disabilities and the community at large to recreate and focus on physical fitness. The facility will include a fitness area, a multipurpose space and a gymnasium that will allow for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. 'We want the center to not only serve our clients with disabilities, but the greater community, knowing that when we bring everyone together with the focus on health and focus on inclusion, that the entire community wins,' Disability Action Center Executive Director Julie Sole said. Aerial Drone Competition Northeast Regional Championship begins at Fairmont State University The DAC raised around $1.7 million over four years to fund this project. Funders included Senator Manchin, Senator Capito, a number of state officials, the Marion County Commission and Kevin and Donna Wilfong, whose family has been heavily involved with the disabled community in the area since 1958. Kevin Wilfong's parents founded the first association in Marion County for people with developmental disabilities after his younger brother passed away from hydrocephalus. Wilfong said his contributions to the wellness center were very meaningful to him and that the facility will be designed to better serve people with disabilities in the area with features such as matts on the walls and wheelchair accessibility. The Disability Action Center said it plans on working to get the Wilfong Wellness Center up and running as soon as possible. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Morgantown to implement alternative sentencing program for camping ban

MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — Morgantown's camping ban has been a hot topic among the community over the past few months, as concerned citizens feared the policy would hinder its homeless population rather than help it. However, the city has announced that it will be taking a different approach to those who violate the ban. In a press release earlier this week, the City of Morgantown announced that it would implement an alternative sentencing for those who violate its camping ban. This comes after the vote to repeal Morgantown's camping ban failed in this year's municipal election. The sentencing comes to fruition through a partnership with Valley HeathCare Systems, which has seen its LEAD Program reach a 60% success rate in its first year. The press release outlined the specifics of the sentencing under the ordinance: A first violation results in a written warning and information about available shelter and services, both locally and regionally. A second violation may result in a fine of up to $200 and information about available shelter and services. A third violation within 12 months may result in a fine of up to $500 and/or up to 30 days in jail, along with information about available shelter and services and alternative sentencing options. Clarksburg labor union to pay nearly $270k to settle federal PPP claims 12 News spoke with Morgantown's Director of Public Relations and Communications, Brad Riffee, on why the city chose to create this sort of sentencing. 'There's a balance between compliance and compassion, right? We want to make sure that we're offering the best solutions to meet the needs for our citizens, and we believe that at the end of the day, that's a very important part of how we engage and operate in the community,' Riffee said. 12 News also spoke with Steve Bennett, Director of LEAD and Crisis Services within Valley HealthCare, about what the program offers those who volunteer for it. 'Anyone who is seeking diversion voluntarily that might want treatment for substance use, mental health, or any other case management services can ask for services through us, we can help them, hook them up with the right program, and get them the help that they need,' Bennett said. The alternative sentencing partnership will begin on June 4, 2025. You can read more about the sentencing in Morgantown's press release. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Caretaker charged after allegedly taking jewelry from seniors in her care for 10 years in Mon County

MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — A woman has been charged with stealing from multiple elderly victims in Monongalia County over the past 10 years after a family said she took $20,000 worth of jewelry from a person she was hired to take care of. On April 27, deputies with the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department began a criminal investigation into Julia Fowler, 51, of Albright, who had been hired by a family to care for an elderly person suffering from cognitive decline at a home in Morgantown, according to a criminal complaint. Family members had reported that jewelry was going missing from the residence; after the investigation began, the elderly victim's family members were 'able to identify 26 pieces' of jewelry which were sold by Fowler to a pawn shop in Westover, according to the complaint. Man allegedly threw Crown Royal bottle near 2 children while in vehicle in Fairmont Those pieces were sold to the pawn shop for a total of $6,986, but family members said the jewelry was worth approximately $20,000 to $25,000, deputies said. Deputies also learned that Fowler had 'taken care of several elderly individuals' over the course of approximately 10 years, and all have reported jewelry missing during Fowler's employment,' according to the complaint. Fowler has been charged with multiple counts of financial exploitation of the elderly. She is being held in the North Central Regional Jail on $100,000 bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
