1 dead, 4 injured as car from wedding party falls into ditch
Varanasi: One person died, and four others were seriously injured when a car carrying a wedding party fell into a ditch near Jamdih village of Mau on Friday morning, police said.
According to reports, the group was travelling from Bansgaon in Gorakhpur to Khirikotha in the Madhuban police station area on Thursday evening.
After the wedding festivities, the guests were returning to their respective places.
One of the cars was heading towards the Gorakhpur-Varanasi four-lane road via the Madhuban-Ghosi route.
Around 6.30am, as the car approached Jamdih village, the driver dozed off and the car collided with the railing of a small bridge and fell into a ditch.
Chandramol Tripathi alias Deepu (38), from Bansgaon, died on the spot. Meanwhile, Kishan Pandey (30) from Pandey Tighra, Sandeep Prajapati (30), Madan Tiwari (18) from Bhiti, and his brother Bishu Tiwari (19) were seriously injured.
Upon receiving information, police arrived at the scene and sent all the injured to the community health centre by ambulance. Seeing the critical condition of the four, the doctor referred them to the district hospital.
Ghosi SO Manoj Kumar Singh said the cause of the incident is being investigated.

Villagers protest death of youth in Nalanda
Patna: An irate mob blocked the road near Ajanta Cinema at Ramchandrapur locality under Laheri police station area in Nalanda on Sunday, following the recovery of the body of a 22-year-old-youth. He was missing from his home since Saturday evening, and his body was recovered later in the night from Shivaji Nagar locality. The family alleged that he was killed by his friends. The youth was working in a paint company in Hyderabad and had recently returned home on May 20, police said. Laheri station house officer (SHO) Ranjit Kumar Rajak said, "Police reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the road blockade. The situation was brought under control after assuring the family of a proper investigation into the matter." He further said that while initial probe suggests a possible drug overdose, the exact cause of death would be determined after the postmortem. "The family maintains that this could be a premeditated incident and demands swift arrest and strict punishment for the culprits. The police are investigating the case from all angles, and further action will be taken based on the family's formal complaint," the SHO added.

Court cites prosecution lapses, acquits builder in civic officials assault case
Thane: A sessions court in Thane district has acquitted a builder of assaulting and threatening civic officials, pointing to lapses in the prosecution's case, including the failure to examine the primary witnesses. In his order of June 3, a copy of which was made available on Friday, additional sessions judge G T Pawar dropped all charges against Vinod Gangasahay Trivedi. The prosecution stated that Trivedi had obstructed a team of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation photographing an under-construction building in 2015. He threatened the official and even assaulted one of them. Trivedi also snatched the camera from one of the officials and deleted the photos, the prosecution said. Judge Pawar said the individuals who were the direct subjects of the alleged acts were never brought to the witness box. The court noted that the two officials who testified, including the informant, were not the direct victims of the alleged criminal force. The court also observed that the police did not recover the camera. Butibori man sentenced to 12 years RI for sexual abuse of minor girl
Nagpur: Sachin Kukde (39), a resident of Teacher Colony, Hinganghat, was sentenced to a total of 12 years rigorous imprisonment and fined heavily for the sexual abuse of a minor girl. The judgment was pronounced by district and sessions judge HC Shende on Saturday. The incident occurred when the minor girl was alone at her home. Kukde, currently residing at Borkhedi Phata, Butibori, allegedly entered the complainant's house and forcibly sexually abused the minor victim. He also threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone. According to the police, the crime was registered at Butibori police station following a complaint by the victim's family. The case was registered under sections 327/23, 376 (A, B), 376 (3), 452, 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The investigation was led by sub-divisional police officer Puja Gaikwad, who filed a chargesheet against the accused. The court found the accused guilty and handed down the following sentences: 12 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs10,000 under section 376 (A, B) and 511 IPC (with six months simple imprisonment in default of fine payment); seven years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs5,000 under section 452 IPC (with three months simple imprisonment in default); and an additional 12 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs10,000 under section 376 (3) and 511 IPC, read with sections 4 and 6 of the POCSO Act (with six months simple imprisonment in default).
