M48: New restrictions on key crossing between England and Wales
Weight restrictions have now been implemented for heavy-goods vehicles on a key crossing between England and WalesIntroduced on the M48 Severn Bridge, the limits mean vehicles over 7.5 tonnes in weight will need to find other routes. It has been estimated that about 10% of the 32,000 vehicles that cross at Chepstow every day will have to to use a diversion via the M4 bridge.National Highways said the restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of the 60-year-old bridge and to reduce the load on its cables.Restrictions are expected to be in place for 12 to 18 months while a medium-term solution is developed and installed.
The crossing will remain open to all emergency vehicles, scheduled buses, coaches, gritters and recovery vehicles.During unplanned closures of the Prince of Wales bridge, vehicles over the weight threshold will be diverted via the M5 and M50, with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (APNR) cameras being explored by National Highways to support enforcement.Some hauliers have said this diversion could be devastating for their businesses.A director of an Avonmouth-based haulage company warned the alternative route into Wales via the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge is not always reliable, and drivers could be forced to take lengthy detours around Gloucester.But, National Highways bosses said they had "no choice" but to impose weight limits in the interest of public safety, and that they are looking for a long-term solution to allow HGVs to return "in a controlled manner".

A51 drivers in Rugeley warned of night closures
Drivers are being warned that a major road in Staffordshire will be closed at night for 11 days as the redevelopment of an old power station site A51 in Rugeley will shut in both directions between Wheelhouse Road and Power Station Road from 9-20 closures, between 19:00 and 06:00 BST, come after a new roundabout was installed at the site, part of which is being developed into the county's first ever all-through school, providing education from nursery age to next stage of roadworks will include extending paths and cycleways while a toucan crossing, with signals for both pedestrians and cyclists, will be created. Roads near Port of Dover to close for new border changes
Some roads around the Port of Dover will be closed from Monday so works can be carried out ahead of the new entry/exit system (EES) being installed at the port says that the work to be carried out by National Highways will be carried out at the Union Street junction, close to the port's first phase will begin on 9 June and run until Friday 11 July, which will mean drivers can only access Union Street from the A20. A diversion route will be put in place via Wellesley Road for anyone who wants to return to the A20. A second phase will then begin on 14 July for two-and-a-half months until the end of this phase, there will be a full closure of Union Street and the port says there will be a signed diversion via Wellesley Road for the full works will take place throughout regatta weekend on 12 and 13 July, the port completed, there will be two new lanes from Union Street to turn right onto the A20 and a new left-turn option. The BBC understands the new system will begin at the Port of Dover from 1 will replace current passport stamping, requiring visitors from outside the European Union to register fingerprints, a photo and passport details to enter the system was due to begin in November 2024 but was delayed as the technology was not ready in time.
