First rendering of new Owensboro senior center revealed

Yahoo03-05-2025

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — After several years of planning, the Senior Center of Owensboro-Daviess County is giving a first look at the design for the new center. Officials also reveal when they hope to break ground.
The Center's Executive Director David Tucker says Hayden Construction and Axiom Architecture have been chosen to bring the new center location to life. Tucker gave a first look at the overall design rendering for the 23,000 square foot facility.
'We think within the month of May…hopefully we will have shovels in the ground for a groundbreaking and be able to reveal the actual floor plans of that building,' says Tucker.
It will sit on 8 acres of land at the corner of Carter Road and West Second Street, near western botanical gardens. The center and the Daviess County Fiscal Court have designated a little over $6 million for the project.
'I've had seniors tell me 'we never believed it was going to happen, but we believe now we're finally going to see it'. The older ones say 'we've waited so long, we just hope we live to see it'…but there's a lot of excitement,' says Tucker.
The current building is 90 years old and sits on 4 acres.
'It's really something just for us to be together…we can eat, we can communicate, we can do crafts, and come here to socialize and have friends,' says Zanea Ashley, a member of the senior center.
The new center will feature an updated air conditioning system, more parking space and a walking trail around the property.
'…a craft room and game room. We'll also have a larger group exercise room, which is very popular. The back of the building will also feature an outdoor patio space. We're kind of brainstorming maybe some some 'donuts with the director' mornings,' says Tucler.
The center's Meals on Wheels program will have its own designated space.
If construction can begin in the next few weeks, the predicted completion date is fall of 2026.

Mesker Park Zoo puts its tortoises on display

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Mesker Park Zoo in Evansville moved its tortoises outside for the season. Zoo officials say they weighed all the tortoises and put them on display. African spurred tortoises can go weeks without food or water. Experts say they can drink up to 15 percent of their body weight when they find a water source. They can also live up to 100 years old. Mesker Park Zoo is open all year long. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Where are they on that project: Mount Carmel Pool

MOUNT CARMEL, Ky. (WEHT) — The Mount Carmel Pool has been a staple in the community dating back to 1936. Now almost 90 years later the old pool is being demolished and a new pool is being built. Mayor Joe Judge says a big problem arose last year when the main filter bed imploded causing 35,000 gallons of water to leak a day. 'To keep the pool open last summer, we had to put a lot of chlorine in it at a very high expense and the state came in and said we would not be able to reopen in 2025, unless we made all the improvements they had been talking about,' said Judge. Those improvements include fixing electrical problems, becoming ADA compliant, upgrades to the chemical room, and everything else that had to be brought up to code. The city council took a vote making the decision that it would be in the best interest of the taxpayers to build a new pool. 'We told the engineering company we wanted something you know, iconic to replace the pool that we have and they've come up with something that we think will be a hit with not only our community, but with other communities in the area,' said Judge. While the final renderings have not been released, Mayor Judge says the new facility will have aquatic features not seen in the area. 'It'll have the six swim lanes for competition swim,' said Judge. 'It will have several aquatic features that no other pool in the area has, which we're pretty excited about…and you know, one of the big things everybody loves about you know, our iconic pool that we have, is the beach. You know, being able it's a bowl style and we will still have that functionality with the new pool.' Contractors arrived on site today and the entire process should only take up to 2025 days. Wabash County juvenile dies from helium balloon suffocation

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The Wabash County Coroner's Office is providing a warning to the public after a juvenile reportedly died from accidental suffocation due to a helium filled balloon. According to a release from the coroner's office, Coroner Shaun Keepes responded to a report of an accidental death of a juvenile in Mount Carmel on May 29. The identity of the juvenile was not provided, but authorities say preliminary findings indicate that the cause of death was consistent with suffocation due to a Mylar-helium filled balloon. In the release, Coroner Keepes noted the potential dangers associated with large child size Mylar balloons. 'While often seen as harmless decorations, these balloons can pose serious risks – particularly to young children – including the rare but devastating possibility of suffocation and/or helium toxicity,' said Keepes. The Mount Carmel Police Department and the Illinois State Police Child Death Task Force are continuing the investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
