Benny Blanco is behind so many pop hits, he sometimes Shazams his own songs
Selena Gomez's soon-to-be betrothed revealed that he sometimes finds himself jamming to a song and wondering who made it, only to discover it was himself.
"Sometimes I am in a restaurant and I'm like, 'Oh my god, this song's so good.' And I Shazam it, and then it's my own song," Blanco told influencer Jake Shane on his popular podcast "Therapuss."
"I'm old and I can't remember anything," Blanco, 37, joked on the episode that dropped July 10.
"I've done like hundreds of songs that have come out," he said, adding that he has been "making songs for 16 years." The confession came after Shane asked him who the biggest pop star he had worked with was, to which Blanco replied Britney Spears. Blanco worked on Spears' 2008 hit 'Circus.'
In an attempt to provide an easy comparison for Shane, who seemed shocked by the revelation, Blanco compared his musical tracks to podcast episodes.
"Do you remember every single podcast, every word you said?" he asked. "Let's say you're on your 16th season of your podcast and someone's like, 'Did you interview Chelsea Handler?' And you're like, 'I think so?'"
That Blanco can't recall his hand in some of the most popular pop anthems of today is likely influenced by the fact that he's been part of so many. A prolific record producer and songwriter, his recent collaboration with Gomez – a loved-up concept album about their romance – is only the latest in a string of high-profile partnerships.
Blanco has written for pop princesses like Ariana Grande, Kesha and Katy Perry, and proved versatile across genres, collaborating with Kanye West, Eminem, SZA and Rihanna.
In many cases, he has been more of the invisible hand guiding a song to No. 1 hit status. His engagement with Gomez, however, and their preceding courtship, has thrust him more into the public eye, and their new album "I Said I Love You First ... And You Said It Back" moves him from a name on the song credits, to the the subject (and architect) of the music.
