Portillo's to make a crucial final decision this summer
Hot dogs are a beloved American staple, and different states have even put their own twist on the classic.
Although a controversial opinion among Americans, no one does hot dogs better than Chicago. The Chicago-style dog consists of an all-beef frankfurter wrapped in a poppy seed bun, garnished with green pickle relish, chopped onions, sliced tomato, and peppers, topped with yellow mustard, and finished off with a classic dill pickle.

Thousands of restaurants nationwide serve hot dogs, but none compare to the Chicago-based Portillo's. For over 60 years, it has served its beloved Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, and homemade chocolate cake.Although it is a smaller chain compared to rival fast-casual chains, it has grown at an astonishing rate. No one would've expected a humble hot dog stand built in 1963 from a small trailer to become a popular restaurant chain with 94 locations across nine states.
Portillo's () is best known for its Chicago-style dogs. However, due to popular demand and growing competition, it recently made an unexpected change in its classic menu.
The restaurant chain launched its first-ever breakfast menu in April, featuring signature morning staples that Chicago locals love, including various breakfast sandwiches, chocolate cake donuts in collaboration with Stan's Donuts, multiple sides, and handcrafted coffee beverages.
Portillo's is testing its new breakfast menu at five restaurants in the Chicago area from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The morning offerings can be ordered at Niles, Chicago -South Loop, Shorewood, Elmhurst, and Tinley Park locations, as stated on its website.The hype around this new revelation left many customers wondering if the chain plans to offer its breakfast menu nationwide anytime soon.
Their question would be answered only a few weeks later, but the chain's response might not be what many expected.
Portillo's CEO, Michael Osanloo, said during the company's latest earnings call that the feedback from its breakfast pilot has been positive, but this does not mean it will become available at all locations nationwide.
Osanloo said the company will continue to monitor the progress of the breakfast test throughout the summer and gather all the metrics necessary to ensure success before it decides whether to expand it to other locations.
"There's plenty of restaurant companies out there that have tried to expand to breakfast, and it hasn't worked. So we have a number of internal metrics that will define success, and I think we want to make it as clean and clear as possible for us," said Osanloo.
He added that breakfast could be a significant asset for the company, since it would extend the hours that locations are open for business, subsequently increasing sales.
However, there's one major concern with this addition. If not handled properly, breakfast could hurt the bounceback in lunch preparations, affecting overall operations in the company's main business.
More Food News:Osanloo noted that a successful test doesn't mean Portillo's will launch the breakfast menu nationwide; it would just give it the go-ahead to expand it in Chicago. The restaurant chain would then have to test it outside Chicago before bringing it to all locations.

President Donald Trump announced Friday that US and Chinese officials will meet in London on Monday to discuss trade between the two nations. The announcement comes after Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping spoke for 90 minutes on Thursday. After the phone call, the US president said he was encouraged that ongoing trade tensions could soon be resolved. The last talks between the Trump administration and their Chinese counterparts, held on May 12 in Geneva, represented a major turning point for the global trade war. Delegates from China and the United States announced they would significantly roll back their historically high tariffs on one another. Markets rallied, Wall Street banks curtailed their recession forecasts, and moribund USconsumer confidence rebounded significantly. That marked a significant change from April, when tensions ran so high that trade between the United States and China came to an effective halt. The 145% tariffs on most Chinese imported goods made the math impossible for American businesses to buy virtually anything from China, America's second-largest trading partner. But since then, tensions had re-escalated. Trump on Wednesday said in a Truth Social post that Chinese leader Xi Jinping was 'extremely hard to make a deal with.' The talks in the UK are significant, and much is riding on their success – US economic growth remains steady but there are signs of cracking. And no one wants to return to April's standoff, which threatened to plunge the global economy into a stocks, which had rallied earlier in the day on a strong jobs report, rose a bit higher after Trump's Truth Social message about the resumed talks. The Dow was up 450 points, or 1.1%. The S&P 500 rose 1.2%, and the Nasdaq was 1.3% higher.

But while Republicans rapidly tried to de-escalate the situation, they have been quick to make clear that it's MAGA, not Musk, where their allegiance lies. Musk has pushed for Congress to 'kill the bill,' but it does not appear to be shifting the dynamic in Washington. Republicans remain confident in their ability to get Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' across the finish line. Those who had issues with the legislation did so before Musk went nuclear Thursday, and the bill continues its slow progression through the Senate. One Republican strategist even suggested Musk's attacks on the president could temper criticism among Senate Republicans who have taken issue with the legislation because they don't want to be seen as siding with the billionaire. The bill aside, GOP lawmakers made clear they're behind the president over the world's richest man as insults flew despite his massive microphone on X and loads of cash. Anyone thinking there would be an overall shift in the GOP loyalty to Trump was bound for disappointment. The House bill that Speaker Mike Johnson pushed through is the target of Musk's attacks, so his siding with the president is not a surprise, but Johnson staked GOP victories on Trump Friday and continues to project optimism that the spending bill will pass by the 4th of July. National Donut Day glazes KELOLAND
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — While National Donut Day is a nationwide holiday, local businesses are getting a taste of it in Sioux Falls. 'It's kind of like the Super Bowl for donut shops. We definitely look forward to it every year,' said Ben Duenwald, Owner of Flyboy Donuts. South Dakota's fall pheasant outlook is 'very positive' Yonutz Donuts and Ice Cream opened in Sioux Falls last month, just in time for the occasion. The franchise has gained popularity due to its signature 'Smashed Donut' which combines a warm pressed donut with ice cream filling. At 3 p.m. Friday, the first 50 customers at Yonutz will get a free big donut, and then at 7 p.m., the first 50 people can get a free simply smashed donut. But the celebration is more than just an excuse to eat donuts. The day originates back to World War I when female Salvation Army volunteers would serve soldiers on the front lines. 'They could treat the troops in the trenches quickly by giving them something homemade,' Duenwald said. 'A ring donut is easy to cook because it's a lot of surface area. That's why there's a hole in it on it.' Duenwald says Friday's donut holiday is the biggest day for them. On Friday morning they made over 20,000 donuts in preparation, and they continue to prepare them throughout the day. Flyboy Donuts now has five locations throughout Sioux Falls and Duenwald says they've had thousands of people throughout all their locations. 'I've realized that donuts are more of the American fabric than even the hot dog or the apple pie, in my opinion,' said Duenwald. 'Everybody has a memory, a nostalgic memory with donuts or the donut shop they might have grown up with.'
