Prepare database of street hawkers: BJD

Hans India15-05-2025

Bhubaneswar: The Opposition BJD on Wednesday urged the police to prepare a database of street hawkers and regulate them in the wake of the incident of rape of a girl involving a West Bengal-based hawker. The regional party, in a memorandum to Puri SP Vinit Agrawal, appreciated the swift police action for arresting the accused in the Pipili rape incident.
There should be meticulous and transparent investigation into this case, ensuring that all evidence is collected and analysed with utmost diligence and that the perpetrator is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, the memorandum said.
A street hawker, a resident of neighbouring West Bengal, on May 11 allegedly raped a girl in Pipili town. 'We call for the implementation of a strict regulatory framework for all street hawkers operating within Puri district, with a particular focus on those originating from outside Odisha,' the BJD said in the memorandum. 'This framework should include mandatory registration and verification procedures,' the party said.
The police should create a comprehensive database containing the identities, addresses and relevant information of all street hawkers, it said.
The BJD said that this database will facilitate effective monitoring and serve as a deterrent against potential criminal activity in the area. It also suggested enhancing police presence and proactive patrolling, particularly in vulnerable areas, including residential neighbourhoods and public spaces frequented by children.
The Biju Janata Dal also advocated encouragement and implementation of community policing initiatives to foster trust and collaboration between law enforcement and locals, enhancing overall safety and security. The incident of rape that took place on Sunday evening in Pipili municipal area sparked outrage among locals. The victim's family filed a complaint at Pipili police station on Monday, following which the accused was arrested.

India's all-party delegation receives UK support for Operation Sindoor, anti-terror efforts

London [UK], June 3 (ANI): The all-party parliamentary delegation from India concluded a day of high-level engagements in London, meeting UK government ministers, parliamentarians, party leaders, think tanks, and India friendship groups as part of its visit from May 31 to June 3, 2025. Discussions during the visit focused on strengthening India-UK collaboration against cross-border terrorism, with Operation Sindoor highlighted as a significant shift in India's counter-terrorism approach. The delegation received wide-ranging support, reaffirming shared commitments to global security, justice, and strategic partnership, according to High Commission of India, London press release. The day began with an interaction with UK-based think tanks, where the threat of cross-border terrorism and how Operation Sindoor sets a new strategic benchmark in India's fight against it were discussed. The delegation met Catherine West MP, Minister for the Indo-Pacific at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. She reaffirmed the UK's condemnation of terror attacks in India, its strong bilateral ties with India, and support for global efforts to bring perpetrators of terror to justice, read the release. At Conservative Campaign Headquarters, the delegation engaged with Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston CBE, Co-Chair of the Conservative Party, and Koolesh Shah, Co-Chair of the Conservative Friends of India. They voiced strong support for India's fight against terrorism, acknowledged its global implications, and lauded the Indian diaspora's contribution to the UK. The delegation also met with Labour Party India Friendship Groups--including Labour Friends of India, Labour Convention of Indian Organisations, Sikhs for Labour, and Hindus for Labour. The groups expressed unified support for India's anti-terrorism efforts, emphasising the need to dismantle terror infrastructure and curb terror financing. In a separate meeting, the delegation briefed Seema Malhotra MP, UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship and Minister for Equalities, on Operation Sindoor. The day concluded with a dinner interaction with UK thought leaders, discussing the scourge of terrorism, its social impact, and the connected rise of radicalisation. The Indian delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, includes BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, Samik Bhattacharya, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Congress MPs Ghulam Ali Khatana and Amar Singh, former Union Minister MJ Akbar, and former Ambassador Pankaj Saran. Earlier, the all-party delegation interacted with the Indian diaspora at India House in London, reaffirming India's united stance and unwavering commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms. This diplomatic outreach follows Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 as a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, which claimed 26 lives. Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists affiliated with groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. As part of this initiative, seven multi-party delegations are visiting countries worldwide to inform international partners about India's response to terrorism and its broader fight against cross-border terror threats. MMRDA allots BKC plots to Sumitomo, Brookfield for Rs 3,840 crore

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) allotted plots in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to entities related to Japan's Sumitomo Corporation and the US-based Brookfield for Rs 3,840.49 crore via competitive bidding. The government agency handed over allotment letters for plots C-13, C-19 and C-80 to the concerned entities in the presence of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, on Tuesday, 3 June. Goisu Realty, a group company of Sumitomo Realty & Development, has been allotted plot C-13 and C-19 for Rs 1,360.48 crore (39.61 per cent above the base price) and Rs 1,177.86 crore (40.20 per cent above the base price), respectively. The lease for plot C-80 has been awarded to Schloss Bangalore, the operator of a luxury hotels and resorts chain under the 'The Leela' brand name, for Rs 1,302.16 crore (12.34 per cent above the base price). Meanwhile, Goisu already has two office projects in BKC, with one of them scheduled for completion after 2026. The developments follow the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed by MMRDA at the World Economic Forum 2025, Davos (Switzerland), where investments of USD 12 billion were committed by Brookfield and USD 5 billion by Sumitomo for infrastructure development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The total built-up area of all three plots is 86,321.80 square metres. MMRDA is expecting 15,000 high-tech jobs to be created through the developments on the plots. Recently, Sumitomo entered into an office building development project in BKC through a three-way partnership with Hines, a US-based global real estate investment manager and developer, Japan's Mitsubishi Estate Company, and Mumbai-based real estate developer Kanakia Group. The project's gross development value (GDV) is estimated to be around USD 1 billion, according to a source familiar with the matter. The consortium will develop a premium office project in Mumbai's BKC, India's costliest office hub, with an investment of Rs 3,000 crore.

Madras High Court upholds Tamil Nadu's real-money gaming regulations

The Madras High Court on Tuesday upheld Tamil Nadu's regulations that impose time limits on real-money games (RMGs) such as rummy and poker. The state's regulations prohibit real-money gaming platforms from operating between midnight and 5 am. A Bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice K Rajasekar dismissed the writ petitions filed by Esport Players Welfare Association and gaming companies such as WinZO, Head Digital Works, Junglee Games, and Games24x7. The High Court noted regulations framed by the Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority were not paternalistic but were intended to ensure the physical, mental, and financial well-being of the state's people. It said the petitioners' contention that no blanket hours were imposed on consuming content on OTT (over the top) platforms, unlike real-money games, was not sustainable because there were no monetary stakes involved. 'It is only in online RMGs where there are stakes involved (that) the players get attracted by the prospect of rewards, which could lead to addictive behaviour and, more often than ever, (the players) tend to get lost in the pleasure of the game,' the court observed. The court said there was no strong reason to dilute the need for Aadhaar-based authentication. This is required to verify the age of the participants, given that the law prohibits minors from playing real-money games. 'The scope for manipulation or deceit is less in Aadhaar verification (than in) other ID proofs,' it noted. It added the state was authorised to pass legislation to govern matters affecting the public health of its citizens, citing that games such as rummy and poker had created public-health risks in Tamil Nadu. An industry participant said: 'From the industry's perspective, the state's powers are restricted to betting and gambling. RMGs in India are a game of skill and not chance. By consequence, the powers to regulate online games of skill rest only with the Centre.' The person added that the ban hours prohibited professionals from playing in international tournaments. 'Players cannot play international tournaments held during the hours when the blanket ban is imposed (midnight to 5 am). They are missing out. The right to livelihood is in question,' the person added.
