"Working to get High Commissioners deployed in two capitals": MEA reiterates to normalise India-Canada ties
During a press briefing on Thursday, Jaiswal highlighted the progress, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, held a discussion on the matter in Kananaskis on the sidelines of the G7 Summit last month.
He further expressed optimism in the "movement" of India-Canada ties.
"We had the meeting at the Prime Minister level in Kananaskis, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the importance of India-Canada ties and to rebuild these ties. We are working; both sides are now working towards it. We are also working to get High Commissioners deployed in the two capitals. We are positive about the movement in India-Canada ties," Jaiswal stated during the briefing.
Last month, the MEA had stated that both nations are working to reinstate the High Commissioners to each other's capitals in an effort to normalise relations between New Delhi and Ottawa, which had sharply deteriorated last year.
At a press briefing, Jaiswal said PM Modi and Carney had reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada ties during a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in Canada.
He added that both sides agreed to take constructive steps to "restore stability" in the relationship.
"We had issued a press release when we had the last meeting of PM Modi with Prime Minister Carney on the sidelines of the G7 in Kananaskis in Alberta. Both leaders then reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada ties based on shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both sides agreed to take calibrated and constructive steps to restore stability in the relationship, beginning with the early return of high commissioners to each other's capitals," the MEA spokesperson said.
Diplomatic tensions between the two nations flared up last year after the former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that his government had "credible allegations" of India's involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023.
India had strongly denied the charges, calling them "absurd" and "motivated". In response, India recalled six diplomats, including its High Commissioner to Canada, after they were labelled "persons of interest" by Canadian authorities investigating the killing. India also expelled six Canadian diplomats, including Canada's High Commissioner to India.
Nijjar was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023. With Mark Carney now serving as the Canadian Prime Minister after Trudeau's resignation, both countries appear to be taking steps to improve ties.
According to the MEA, India and Canada also agreed to resume senior and working-level mechanisms and discussions in various areas, including trade, people-to-people contact, connectivity and collaboration in key areas like cooperating on clean energy and technology initiatives, collaborating on digital infrastructure projects, exploring opportunities for cooperation in artificial intelligence and discussing potential collaboration on food security and critical minerals.

"Look forward to my talks with PM Keir Starmer and King Charles III": PM Modi
New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday embarked on a visit to the United Kingdom, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations. He said that India's ties with the UK have gained "significant momentum" in recent years under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. "Leaving for the UK, a country with which our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has achieved significant momentum in the last few years. I look forward to my talks with PM Keir Starmer and my meeting with His Majesty King Charles III," Modi said in a post on X after his departure. The visit to the UK from July 23-24 is aimed at boosting bilateral ties, with the signing of the much-awaited India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a key highlight. India and UK share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that has witnessed significant progress in recent years. Our collaboration spans a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health and people-to-people ties. The two countries are expected to sign a free trade agreement, potentially doubling bilateral trade by 2030 from the current $60 billion. "During my meeting with Prime Minister Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer, we will have the opportunity to further enhance our economic partnership, aimed at fostering prosperity, growth and jobs creation in both countries. I also look forward to calling on His Majesty King Charles III during the visit," said PM Modi in his departure statement. The India-UK FTA, has been under negotiation for three years. This agreement is expected to eliminate tariffs on 99% of Indian exports to the UK and reduce tariffs on 90% of British FTA is projected to double bilateral trade by 2030, from the current USD 60 billion mark. Business, tech, research, education emerged as pillars of India-UK cooperation: MEA
New Delhi: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday enlisted areas that have emerged as pillars of India-UK bilateral cooperation, saying that the partnership has seen regular high-level exchanges across sectors such as trade, investment and defence. Addressing a special press briefing ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United Kingdom (UK) and Maldives, Foreign Secretary Misri said, "There are regular engagements at the level of External Affairs Minister and his counterpart, the British Foreign Secretary, and there are several other institutional mechanisms at ministerial level dealing with strategic issues, financial, economic, energy related issues, as well as science and technology. In the contemporary times, the sectors of business, technology, research, education innovation, the knowledge economy have emerged as pillars of our bilateral cooperation." Misri also mentioned how the India-UK partnership was upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2021 and since then, it has seen regular high level political exchanges. He said that both sides remain committed to taking this partnership to even higher levels. "Our bilateral trade is across USD 55 billion in 2023-24. UK is also the sixth largest investor in India, with accumulative investment of USD 36 billion and interestingly, India itself is a large source of foreign direct investment in the UK with a cumulative investment of close to USD 20 billion," he said. Misri added, "In the defence sector, we are seeing regular interactions and exercises amongst all three branches of the armed forces." Speaking on the importance of the Indian Diaspora, Misri hailed them as the living bridge that connects India and the UK. "One of the most important, probably the foundational aspects of this relationship is the living bridge that connects India in the UK, people of Indian origin in the UK nearly 1.8 million strong Indian diaspora, which has contributed to strengthening bonds of friendship between our two countries, but has also made extremely valuable contributions through UK economy." He also spoke about the issue of Khalistani extremists and related groups as a matter of concern for India, which has been brought to the attention of partners in the UK. PM Modi will embark on a two-nation tour of the UK and the Maldives from July 23 to July 26, the MEA had said on July 20. This visit to the UK is at the invitation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, while the state visit to the Maldives is at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu. According to the MEA, PM Modi will hold wide-ranging discussions with his UK counterpart on the entire gamut of India-UK bilateral relations. They will also exchange views on issues of regional and global importance. Over the years, the India-UK historical ties, have transformed into a robust, multi-faceted, mutually beneficial relationship. The relationship has been elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021. New Delhi and London have seen sustained and frequent high level political engagements. Prime Minister Modi has met UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer twice over the past one year. They met on the sidelines of G20 Summit in Brazil in November 2024, and again during G7 Summit in June 2025. Both also had multiple telephonic conversations over the period. (
