New head of Russian land forces distinguished himself in Ukraine
The government daily said Andrei Mordvichev was born in 1976 in what was then Soviet Kazakhstan and last year was decorated as a Hero of Russia, the country's highest award.
Mordvichev, previously head of the Central Military District, commanded operations that led to the 2022 surrender of Ukrainian units holding out in the Azovstal steelworks after a siege of about 80 days in the southern port of Mariupol.
In 2024, he led Russian troops capturing the mining centre of Avdiivka in Donetsk region on the war's eastern front, a key operation in a town where Ukrainian authorities had for years built up fortifications.
Rossiiskaya Gazeta said he also led Russian forces in retaking three key towns in their slow advance westward through Donetsk region - Selydove, Kurakhove and Ukrainsk.
Earlier in his career, he had also taken part in conflicts in Syria.
Mordvichev takes over from army general Oleg Salyukov, replaced as head of ground forces on Thursday by a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin.
Salyukov, 69, was appointed deputy secretary of the Security Council, the Kremlin's top consultative body, chaired by Putin, and which is responsible for managing and integrating national security policy.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, which was conducted from Aug. 13-18, included 4,446 participants and has a margin of error of about 2 percentage points.

Fox News analyst shuts down Trump's dream of quick end to Russia-Ukraine war
Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume is not holding his breath for a quick resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war despite President Donald Trump's recent efforts. Hume praised Trump for the White House talks held on Monday between European leaders, U.S. officials and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He described the meeting as an 'impressive display' of unity between the U.S. and Europe as Trump tries to negotiate an end to the war. 'Well, it certainly was an impressive display, Bret, perhaps even a historic display of US European unity, at least in the modern age, in these recent years, when there's been so much tension between President Trump in particular and European leaders,' Hume told Fox News' Bret Baier on Monday. 'Today, they were all united, sitting around the table, praising him and talking about their optimism for peace. And all of that is a good thing, no doubt. But we also had a response from Russia today to the idea of some kind of a NATO-like peacekeeping force with European nations in it in Ukraine. And they say they explicitly reject that, and always have,' he continued. However, Hume then suggested that a resolution to the end of the war is not in the near future. Despite Trump's repeated vows for a quick resolution, no deal between Russia and Ukraine has been secured. 'They would have to give some real ground there in order to change Russia's mind about that. And I think it suggests that the path toward a final deal here may be some considerable ways off as much as the president, who always likes to have things done quickly, as we hear him say, would like this to happen on a fast track,' Hume said. Trump said he would forge ahead with arrangements for a meeting between Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. He spoke by phone with Putin during Monday's talks with Zelenskyy and the leaders of Britain, Finland, France, Germany and Italy as well as the president of the European Commission and head of NATO. The developments come amid a significant measure of trepidation on the continent that Trump is pressing Ukraine to make concessions that will only further embolden Putin after the U.S. leader hosted the Russian president for an Alaska summit last week. 'I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy,' Trump said in a social media post. 'After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself. Again, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.' It was not clear if Putin has fully signed on to such talks.
