Skylar Early Learning owner Jo Talmage offers her secret to business success at 2025 ACCI Leadership Forum
The owner of a childcare business who tripled her revenue and expanded to four centres in two years explained the secret to her success at a business event in Albany last week.
Skylar Early Learning owner Jo Talmage spoke about revenue and resilience at the Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry Leadership Forum last Wednesday.
The businesswoman, mother and foster parent used the child psychology theory of attachment to explain how resilient companies are like securely attached children.
'A resilient, securely attached business is one where staff know that their leadership is going to show up for them, that teams will be trusted and that they're psychologically safe, that mistakes will be repaired and not punished, and that people feel like they're a part of something that's bigger than profit,' she said.
'In these environments, people take risks.
'They stay at the companies longer, they speak up and they lift each other.
'That's not just resilience, it's retention, it's innovation and it's culture.'
Ms Talmage opened her first childcare centre in Albany 2023 and turned over $600,000 in revenue in her first year.
She has since opened centres in Bremer Bay and Mt Barker and is set to open her fourth in Centennial Park later this year.
She now reports an almost $2 million yearly revenue.
'We did what it takes to scale our business based on one belief that when children and families are supported by high-quality early childhood education care, whole communities are shaped and that if we put wellbeing and relationships first, everything else will follow — and it has,' she said.
'But what inspires me about Skylar Early Learning the most isn't the numbers, although I'm proud of those.
'It's when a parent tells me their child feels safe.
'It's when team members tell me they've never been felt more supported.
'And it's when I see our values not just written on a wall but lived in our centres, and that's why we're here.'
Ms Talmage was one of six speakers at the annual ACCI event.

California to sue Trump over National Guard deployment
California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, told MSNBC that he plans to file suit Monday against the Trump administration to roll back the National Guard deployment, which he called 'an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act.' This appears to be the first time in decades that a state's National Guard was activated without a request from its governor. Trump has cited a legal provision that allows him to mobilize federal service members when there is 'a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.' Roughly 300 National Guard members arrived in the city over the weekend, and Trump said he had authorized 2,000 members to deploy if needed. Chanel launches Nevold B2B circularity hub
Chanel is diving headfirst into sustainability — or more specifically waste management and recycling — with the creation of an independent-of-Chanel B2B hub focused on circularity that will handle unsold stock, fabric offcuts and other unused materials. See catwalk The new entity is called Nevold (that is, 'never old') and is reportedly being headed by Sophie Brocart, the former Patou CEO. As an independent business it will work with other companies and brands and won't only focus on the luxury sector. Ultimately it should be able to produce recycled materials for use in new items. Around 30% of Chanel bags and 50% of Chanel shoes include recycled elements at present and this should increase, as well as its new hub helping other companies to head in the same direction. The company's investment in the project has been estimated at between €50 million and €80 million, trade paper WWD reported. The fashion sector is undeniably the source of a huge amount of waste and it's an issue that isn't only one for fast-fashion producers to solve (even though they're the companies that receive the most criticism on the subject). It's also an issue that puts the wider fashion sector increasingly under the spotlight for both regulators and ever-more-eco-conscious consumers. But as well as aiming to cut down on waste, the industry needs to deal with the problem of resources becoming more scarce due to climate change affecting the locations in which they're produced and work to avoid the huge drain on resources that materials production entails, as well as guaranteeing that those who produce them are treated fairly. Nevold will reportedly address this. Old-style solutions simply aren't acceptable these days (think of the furore surrounding news that Burberry was burning unsold stock a few years ago). And some companies are opting for creative ways to address the problem, such as Coach with its Coachtopia line. Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion at Chanel told Vogue Business: 'We started by asking ourselves what happens to the materials that don't make it into a final product, or those that reach the end of their first life. At Chanel, we didn't destroy unsold products. But we also didn't yet have a real system to understand their full potential. Nevold is that system.' It will be interesting to see how Nevold develops in the months and year ahead.
