China's Record-Breaking ‘Black Myth: Wukong' Game Gets a Sequel

Game Science, the startup behind one of last year's biggest new role-playing games, is working on a successor in the series, Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Introduced at the Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, a new teaser trailer showcases Game Science's signature penchant for high-fidelity graphics and taps Chinese folklore again to add a daunting new character to the fantasy universe initiated by Black Myth: Wukong a year ago. Zhong, much like Wukong before him, is a god from ancient myths, with a red beard, dark skin and glowing eyes.

‘Black Myth: Wukong' Sequel ‘Zhong Kui' Set From Developer Game Science

A sequel to Game Science's hit 2024 video game 'Black Myth: Wukong,' titled 'Black Myth: Zhong Kui,' was revealed during the Opening Night Live presentation at Gamescom 2025 on Tuesday. Per a post shared on X by China-based developer and publisher Game Science, 'This single-player action role-playing game draws its primary creative inspiration from the famed Chinese folk figure 'Zhong Kui.'' More from Variety Gaming the Future: 'Black Myth: Wukong' Boosts Chinese Companies Looking to Reap Rich IP Rewards From Video Games Chinese Game 'Black Myth: Wukong' Is an Instant Global Hit, Attracting Great Reviews, Praise at Home and Controversy Abroad A cinematic teaser of the game was shared during Gamescom, but, 'as the project is still in early development, no in-game footage is available at this time,' Game Science noted. In an FAQ section on its website, Game Science addressed why it has chosen to make a 'Black Myth' game based on a new myth, rather than a direct sequel to 'Wukong,' writing: 'Thanks to the unwavering support from our players, the first 'Black Myth' title has landed safely. Upon completing the journey with the Destined One, we now aspire to take a tentative first step — to build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design. 'Zhong Kui' came as a natural choice born of that aspiration and other contributing factors. We are confident that, in this new project, we can make refreshing changes, create new things, while taking a hard look at past flaws and regrets. And to all friends who love 'Black Myth: Wukong,' the westward journey won't end here.' Watch the teaser for 'Black Myth: Zhong Kui' below. Black Myth: Zhong Kui promises more ARPG and Souls-like action

With an end-of-show announcement that caught us by surprise, Gamescom 2025 wrapped its first broadcast with the announcement of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a game rich in Chinese mythology and lore that focuses on a ghost-catching god. Developer Gamescience took the gaming world by storm with its first title, Black Myth: Wukong and walked away with a slew of nominations and wins from The Game Awards. While short, the trailer gave us a quick peek at the titular character: a man dressed in traditional Chinese armor, sitting astride a truly massive tiger. He brings up the rear of a procession of two gui carrying what appears to be a large sword. Recommended Videos The trailer opens with two men climbing up a statue, only to pause in fear at the sight of the procession. No details of gameplay or story are given, nor do we have any hint of a release date yet. However, Game Science says it is tradition to announce the progress of their games to players on August 20 (believed to be the birthdate of Sun Wukong), although it admits 'even Yocar himself has absolutely no idea' about a release date. Interested players can check for updates. Here's what we do know: the game isn't a direct sequel to Black Myth: Wukong. Instead, the studio wants 'to build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design.' That said, fans of Black Myth: Wukong don't have to worry. Game Science promises the westward journey hasn't come to an end. The development of Zhong Kui is a temporary pause; a new project that borrows from the same source material and offers players something new to sink their teeth into. It will be another single-player ARPG, so be prepared for more punishing difficulty and bosses that test the limits of your skill.
