China Sichuan to Go takeaway review: The aromatic duck alone is worth the trip

What's on offer?
China Sichuan originally did takeaway more than 25 years ago, back when it was run by Kevin Hui's parents on Kilmacud Road in
Stillorgan
, Co Dublin.
During Covid, Kevin briefly revived a collection service out of Whelehan's Wines in Loughlinstown, but that ended when the main restaurant reopened. Still, demand for top-tier Chinese takeaway never went away. China Sichuan to Go is the response: a spin-off focused on lunch and early evening orders, serving a tight menu of dishes from the mothership – same technique, less formality. It opens from 8am on weekdays with coffee and pastries, and has a small retail section selling house-made sauces, dried noodles and a few well-chosen wines.
What did we order?
Wonton dumpling soup, crispy vegetarian dumplings, Sichuan aromatic duck, steamed rice, Chongqing chicken and Mapo tofu.
How was the service?
You order online, choose a collection time and show up. Ours was ready on the dot, piping hot and packed properly – no leaks, no waiting.

Was the food nice?
The wonton dumpling soup is a strong start: a clear broth with bok choi, spring onions, and dumplings stuffed with seasoned chicken and pork – light but satisfying. The crispy vegetarian dumplings are even better: golden, delicately spiced and filled with chopped cabbage and carrot.
The Sichuan aromatic duck is the star of the show. Two generous Silverhill duck breasts are served sliced, with a crunchy outside coating while staying juicy inside. It comes in a compartmentalised container, with cucumber, spring onion, a mellow plum sauce and two packs of pancakes to wrap it all up. The duck alone could feed two.
Chongqing chicken is spicy, salty and crunchy, a pile of deep-fried chicken pieces tossed with dried chillies, spring onions, cabbage and a scattering of cashew nuts. It's like a Sichuan version of popcorn chicken.
The Mapo tofu is also good. Cubes of soft tofu in a punchy, oily sauce of fermented bean paste, dried chilli and Sichuan peppercorns. It's fiery but not overwhelming, and great with steamed rice.
What about the packaging?
Everything is packed into a large paper bag. Plastic containers – recyclable but not ideal – are used for the main dishes, and the rice is in a cardboard container.
What did it cost?
€84.40 for dinner for three people: Wonton dumpling soup, €8.95; crispy vegetarian dumplings, €10.95; Sichuan aromatic duck, €27; Chong Qing chicken with steamed rice, €22; Mapo tofu, with steamed rice, €15.50.
Where does it deliver?
Takeaway only, open Mon-Fri, 8am-9pm; Sat-Sun, 3pm-9.30pm. Delivery is planned for September.
Would I order it again?
Yes. The duck alone is worth the trip. Everything else was well made and full of flavour.

Protesters have urged the Central Bank of Ireland not to proceed with the approval for the sale of Israel bonds in advance of an upcoming renewal date. About 100 demonstrators gathered outside the Central Bank in Dublin on Tuesday to demand an end to the authority's role in approving Israel bonds for sale in the EU, for the Government to include services in the Occupied Territories Bill and to pass that legislation. The bank is the designated authority in relation to the sale of Israel bonds in the EU, and has determined the securities meet the standards of the union's prospectus regulations. Israel bonds have been advertised as supporting the country's economy and, more recently, websites promoting the securities emphasise their role in supporting Israel's military operations in Gaza. They say the bonds are intended to fund the war in Gaza, while Ireland has an obligation under the Genocide Convention to use all means likely to have a deterrent effect on those suspected of preparing genocide. The Israel bond prospectus is up for renewal on September 2nd. On a busy summer morning, Dublin commuters were being approached by eager students' union officers in a 'last-ditch effort to get some rooms' for incoming college goers. 'We have people who sleep in cars and serial couch surfers,' said University College Dublin (UCD) students' union president Michael Roche, who was on the canvass at St Stephen's Green. – In recent weeks, he said, there has been an influx of queries from concerned students and parents about housing for the year ahead. 'For international students and first years who are quite new to Dublin's rental market, there can also be exploitative situations or scams where people just don't have the knowledge of the market that returning students do,' Mr Roche said. An en-suite room in village three on the college's Belfield campus costs €11,888 for the academic year. The cheapest on-campus option at UCD is a shared bedroom in village one at €5,722. UCD students' union has joined forces with the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology (IADT) for a digs drive aimed at addressing the 'chronic shortage of rental accommodation' in the capital. The student representatives were due to gather again on Tuesday evening at bus and Luas stops around the city to push their appeal. UCD students' union campaign and engagement officer Hazen E Griffin has experience of the challenges of finding accommodation as an international student in Dublin. Arriving from the US, Mr Griffin said he was shocked at the housing crisis in Ireland and spent the summer couch-surfing while struggling to find a place to live for the upcoming academic year. It had taken a 'serious' toll on his mental health, he said. 'This is the experience of countless students,' Mr Griffin said. 'This is a last-ditch effort to get some rooms for students who are coming in the next two weeks to study at Irish universities.' Welfare officer Emilia O'Hagan, from Co Down, lived and worked 'upwards of 50 hours a week' in a Dublin boarding school during second year when no other accommodation options were available. 'Looking back, that was a really messed up situation for someone in their second year of college,' she said. 'I was only 19 and basically mothering over 30 children. I was on call all night ... any social life was out the window.' The digs drive 'is quite personal to me', she said, describing how she failed exams due to the demands of her work and living arrangement. Shreyansh Jagtap from Mumbai, India, said living in digs has positively transformed his college experience. Mr Jagtap lives with a family in Ongar, west Dublin, who have rented a room to him for €600 a month for the last year. 'They have kids, so it's like a family for me here. It's giving mental support plus a good space,' he said. One 'perk' of the digs arrangement, he said, has been the home-cooked meals included in the rent. Now the students' union's graduate officer, Mr Jagtap said he has seen how renting in Dublin was '10 times harder' than in Mumbai. 'Mumbai is also expensive, but not this much,' he said.

Around 130 jobs could be lost after the Leprino Foods Company said it will close its manufacturing plant in Portlaoise in the second half of next year. The Co Laois factory produces mozzarella and string cheese. Siptu representatives are due to meet with senior management at Leprino Foods in Portlaoise on Wednesday. Terry Bryan, Siptu Industrial Organiser, on Tuesday said: 'Our immediate thoughts are with our members and their families following this shocking announcement this afternoon. 'We will engage with the company directly to see if we can lessen the impact of the decision upon our members and their families, and try to explore alternatives to the proposed job losses.' Mr Bryan said the company is 'a significant employer in the Portlaoise and midland area, employing 130 workers'. 'It has only been in operation since 2020 and is a modern, state-of-the-art facility. This is both a shocking and regrettable announcement,' he said in a statement. 'Siptu's focus and concern is for our members and our members' families at this difficult time.' Leprino employs around 5,500 people worldwide.
