Another chapter of the exciting Alcaraz vs Sinner rivalry is set to take place as the two players lock horns for the first time in a Masters 1000 final. This is the last big event before Roland Garros where Alcaraz will be defending his title.
It is the 11th meeting between the two players and the first since last year's China Open final in Beijing. Alcaraz has won the last three battles.
Sinner came into the Italian Open after a three-month doping ban. However, the 23-year-old Italian has shown why he is the best player in the world. The home favourite has dropped only one set on his way to the final.

Sinner, who is on a 26-match winning streak, aims to become the first Italian man to clinch the title since Adriano Panatta in 1976.
The 22-year-old Alcaraz entered the Italian Open after missing the Madrid Open due to injury. The Spaniard, like Sinner, has dropped only one set in five matches.
Alcaraz, who was the champion in Monte Carlo, is looking to become the first man since countryman Rafael Nadal in 2018 to win multiple clay ATP Masters 1000 titles in a season.

Italian Open 2025 final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner is set to begin around 8:30PM IST on Sunday, May 18. You can stream the match live on SonyLiv and JioTV.

Vinicius Junior's goal sends Brazil to 2026 World Cup, delighting fans in Ancelotti's home debut

A goal by Vinicius Júnior secured Brazil a place in the 2026 World Cup, quite a momentous home debut for Carlo Ancelotti as head coach. The once prolific duo at Real Madrid helped Brazil to a 1-0 win over Paraguay at Sao Paulo. Ecuador secured its place at next year's global tournament later Tuesday (June 10, 2025) with a 0-0 draw at Peru. Defending champion Argentina, held to a 1-1 draw by Colombia, had already qualified and is assured of finishing atop South American qualifying. Ecuador and Brazil each have 25 points in the standings, but the Ecuadorians are in second spot based on victories. The two nations are 10 points behind Argentina but, crucially, more than six points clear of the seventh-place team with two games remaining in the qualifying campaign. The top six teams in South America earn direct entries to the 48-team World Cup. Chile misses out again Chile will miss a third consecutive World Cup after losing 2-0 at Bolivia to remain last in 10-nation round-robin competition, a result that cost head coach Ricardo Gareca his job. Uruguay beat Venezuela at home 2-0, with goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta, and edged closer to one of the direct spots with 24 points. Venezuela, with 18, is one ahead of Bolivia in the contest for seventh place that grants an intercontinental playoff berth. Argentina draws with Colombia Lionel Messi had a quiet night in Argentina's draw with Colombia in Buenos Aires. Luis Díaz opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24th minute. Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the 70th minute to the disappointment of more than 80,000 fans at the Monumental de Nunez Stadium. But Julián Alvarez scored the equalizer in the 81st with a low crossed shot. Ancelotti received some frustration from fans after Thursday's 0-0 draw with Ecuador, as his team focused on defending the entire match. The Italian coach, who turned 66 Tuesday, promised changes to make his team more aggressive at the NeoQuimica Arena. He was welcomed by 46,000 fans, including NBA star Gianni Antetokounmpo, who displayed a tifo in yellow and green that read 'Parabens, Carleto' (Happy birthday, Carleto in Portuguese). Gabriel Martinelli replaced midfielder Gerson and was one of the best players of the encounter. Raphinha returned after suspension and created many problems for Paraguay's defense. And Vinicius Júnior was often seen as a targetman, sharing the duties with Matheus Cunha. A mistake by Paraguay's defense, a low cross by Cunha and a gentle touch by Brazil's new No. 10 produced the only goal of the match. 'It is for you,' the striker told the coach as he celebrated. Despite the low score, the hosts were much more aggressive than in most of its games in this World Cup qualifying campaign. 'We needed to win here for our people. Now we have more time to work, see what we can improve,' Vinicius said after the match. He won't play Brazil's next game in qualifying against Chile due to suspension. 'We need to celebrate this. After September, it is all about the World Cup.' Ancelotti gets warm welcome After the final whistle, a clip of Ancelotti's first days on the job was shown in big screens around the stadium. A raucous celebration erupted again, as if the Italian coach had brought new life to a team that only three months ago appeared lost and doomed. He said the team was balanced despite having four strikers. He also said that Cunha's role, as a playmaker, is the one he figures will be Neymar's if the veteran fully recovers his fitness. 'It's no problem to play with three or four up front. We need 10 players to run, to sacrifice,' Ancelotti said. 'Rodrygo did this many times, I know him well. And Neymar will also do it.' Chile's golden generation won two Copa America titles — in 2015 and '16 — but is out of contention for next year's expanded 48-team tournament. 'Sad, I am feeling bad. Never lived something like this. We have to ask people to forgive us,' veteran Chile striker Alexis Sánchez said. 'We have to keep working. There's change already, the golden generation is buried, I am the only one left.' Bolivia scored first via Miguel Terceros in the fifth minute and added a second in the 90th with Enzo Monteiro at the 4,150-meter high El Alto Stadium, outside La Paz. Gareca, the 67-year-old Argentinian coach who took Peru to the 2018 World Cup, told a post-game news conference he was leaving the team after a 17-match stretch that included four wins, four draws and nine losses. The South American qualifying tournament will finish in September. Uruguay and Paraguay each need one point to secure their direct spots. The Uruguayans will face Peru and Chile. The Paraguayans will take on Ecuador and Peru. Colombia, in sixth place with 22 points, will play for its World Cup future against Bolivia and Venezuela. Bolivia will seek its first chance to play at the World Cup since 1994 against the Colombians and then Brazil. Venezuela's rivals will be Argentina and Colombia.

'Everyone loves Carlitos': Alcaraz wins hearts and French Open, Sinner plays second fiddle

Carlos Alcaraz (Pic credit: Roland Garros) Popular Alcaraz's personality is gregarious, his style electric. In contrast, the quieter Sinner is all cold steel to his audience The Times of India at Roland Garros: Carlos Alcaraz was bathed in the brassy cheering of Court Philippe-Chatrier, some 15,000 spectators singing, 'Let's go Carlos, let's go…' When the 22-year-old was trailing, they cried out, 'Carlitooooossss!' and when he thumped or caressed one of 70 winners he hit in the French Open final, 'Vamos Carlos' they exploded. A deafening chorus of appreciation. Anyone thinking Alcaraz was the only one in the middle on Roland Garros's red clay would be forgiven, only that he couldn't possibly be playing himself. There was an opponent, Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! When the volume in the stands dropped as players prepared to serve, a weak strain of 'Janeeeek', 'Janeeeek' could be heard from high up in the galleries. Outside of his box the Italian had very little support, but the box, with Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi leading the applause that no one else heard, had a whole different vibe to it. To the 23-year-old, it was like the light of a window at home you see from a distance. It was comforting. Who's that IPL player? The city of love wanted Alcaraz to win as much as the 22-year-old wanted to. Odell Beckham Jr was on his feet, pointing at his head, urging Alcaraz to stay strong when the scale had tipped dramatically at one stage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Zaruma: Calcule cuánto podría ganar invirtiendo en Amazon CFD Empezar ahora Subscríbete Undo Spike Lee took off his hat, applauding the Spaniard's brilliance. 'Paris you were insane for me,' Alcaraz told the crowd. '(In) today's match, you were important.' Poll Who do you think has the more captivating personality on the court? Carlos Alcaraz Jannik Sinner Both are equally captivating Neither has a captivating personality The Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry, that pits two men born 21 months apart, in Murcia, Spain and Innichen, Italy, is only 12 matches old. But this clash of opposites in personality and play sparks Rafael Nadal-Roger Federer vibes. Alcaraz's tennis is electric and his personality gregarious while Sinner internalises, and to the audience, he's all steel. He's the introvert to Alcaraz' extrovert. Sinner can hold back like he did in the fourth set when he had three match points, but Alcaraz will go for it and let the pieces fall where they may. 'My fear is tennis becomes an obligation,' Alcaraz said in the documentary My Way, worrying that the love he feels for the sport would drain if he simply turned up for practice because he had to. Earlier this year, Sinner said, 'When he's (Alcaraz) winning, I feel my practice sessions are becoming more intense.' Virat Kohli's love for 'dhaba' food, priority for family & more | RCB bus driver shares stories In 2019, Federer and Nadal met in the Roland Garros semifinals, their 39th meeting and last on clay. When the Swiss superstar entered the court, having stayed away from the clay-court Major for three years, the fans showed how much he had been missed. Nadal followed Federer on court a minute later and the cheering dropped many levels, by then Nadal was Roland Garros' 11-time champion. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's summation of the Federer effect, fits nicely for Alcaraz too. 'Everyone loves Roger,' the Frenchman had said. Alcaraz, with his dazzling range and daring shot selection that can make him look like a magician one moment and pedestrian the very next, is winning fans and matches. In the final, where Sinner, with his howitzer ground game, dominated the short rallies clinching 108 to Alcaraz's 97, Alcaraz surprisingly wrapped up a larger chunk of the longer rallies. In the final set tiebreak, he won seven of eight points in rallies of five shots or more. It was like he was asking a battling Sinner, show me all you've got, and I've got one more, every time. Before Sunday's 5-hr and 29-min encounter, the longest French Open final was four hours and 24 minutes — Mats Wilander versus Guillermo Vilas in 1982. Nadal's longest final lasted three hours and 49 minutes against Novak Djokovic in 2012. All this was before the final set tie-break came into play. The Italian — who tested positive twice last March for the banned steroid Clostebol — served a three-month ban this year. The stain of the drug violation (even though he had been cleared of wrong doing) may have shrunk Sinner's popularity outside of Italy, but crowds have been fair to him for most part. At different times of the final, one early and the other late, the duo overruled calls for his opponent's serve when they were not in a good position in the match. Alcaraz for a Sinner serve down the tee that was called a fault by a line judge and Sinner for an Alcaraz wide serve even as Eva Asderaki was getting down from her chair. While the Spaniard's action is doing the rounds on social media, no one is talking about Sinner. Maybe because the chair umpire may have overruled the line judge anyway, or because… to customise Tsonga's words, everyone loves Carlitos.
