Palestinian who helped make Oscar-winning No Other Land killed in West Bank

The Guardian5 days ago
Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian activist and journalist who helped make the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, has been killed during an attack by Israeli settlers in the south Hebron hills.
The attack on Monday was captured on video, which appears to show an Israeli settler, Yinon Levi, who was put under sanctions by the US president Joe Biden then removed from the sanctions list by Donald Trump, firing his gun wildly at the time of the killing.
He was later arrested by Israeli police for questioning, though no charges have been filed against him.
The killing comes amid an increasing wave of settler and Israeli military violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. At least 1,009 Palestinians have been killed and more than 7,000 injured in the West Bank since October 2023.
Accountability for settlers who commit acts of violence against Palestinians is rare.
According to activists from the village of Umm al-Khair in the West Bank, where the shooting took place, the killing happened after a settler in a bulldozer drove through their land, destroying trees and property.
When a resident approached to ask the driver of the bulldozer to stop, the driver knocked him down with the blade of the bulldozer. Residents began to throw stones, and Levi allegedly emerged from the settlement and began firing. Hathaleen, who was standing a distance away from the confrontation, was then struck by a bullet.
'My dear friend Awdah was slaughtered this evening,' Basel Adra, the Palestinian co-director of the No Other Land documentary wrote. 'He was standing in front of the community centre in his village when a settler fired a bullet that pierced his chest and took his life. This is how Israel erases us – one life at a time.'
Activists shared the last message Hathaleen sent before being killed, in which he urged people to act to stop settler encroachment on Umm al-Khair.
'The settlers are working behind our houses and … they tried to cut the main water pipe for the community … If you can reach people like the Congress, courts, whatever, please do everything,' Hathaleen wrote.
Yuval Abraham, the Israeli co-director of the film about the Israeli efforts to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from their homes in Masafer Yatta, shared video on social media of the settler shooting during the attack on the village.
The Palestinian Authority's education ministry accused Israeli settlers in the West Bank of killing the activist, writing on social media that Awdah Hathaleen 'was shot dead by settlers ... during their attack on the village of Umm al-Khair' near Hebron, in the south of the occupied territory.
The Israeli military acknowledged the incident, and said an armed 'Israeli civilian' opened fire at a group of people hurling rocks. The Israeli police said they arrested one Israeli citizen for questioning and that they were investigating the incident, while the military arrested seven people from Umm al-Khair, including two international solidarity activists.
'Following the incident, the death of a Palestinian was confirmed,' the police added.
Settlers said they would demonstrate outside the Jerusalem courthouse where Levi was taken for questioning, saying he was 'standing at the forefront' for them.
Hathaleen was a resident of Masafer Yatta, a string of hamlets located on the hills south of Hebron, which have been declared a military zone by Israel. The efforts to prevent Israeli forces from destroying their homes was the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary.
Last month, Hathaleen and his cousin Eid al-Hathaleen, an artist and community leader, were denied entry to the US at San Francisco international airport, after their visas were revoked on arrival for a series of planned talks sponsored by faith groups.
The San Francisco supervisor Bilal Mahmood, who protested against the decision to revoke the visas of the two men and deport them, wrote in a statement on X on Monday: 'Just a few weeks ago, Awdah attempted to come to San Francisco to build bridges between cultures – to share a message of peace. He had come to raise summer camp funds to help give Palestinian children experiencing the unthinkable a semblance of a childhood back home. Instead, he was denied entry at SFO.'
'This is an absolute tragedy, and must be condemned,' Mahmood added.
Trump removed the sanctions Biden imposed on Levi and more than a dozen other extremist settlers and organisations that terrorise Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, on his first day in office in January.
Levi is under both EU and UK sanctions.
Hathaleen also documented the campaign of forced expulsions and demolitions for the Israeli-Palestinian magazine +972.
Last week, in a report headlined 'In Umm al-Khair, the occupation is damning us to multigenerational trauma', he wrote: 'The demolition forces enter the village. All the children run to their mothers, who scramble to salvage whatever they can from their homes before it's too late. Everyone watches on anxiously to see who will be made homeless today. The bulldozers gather in the centre of the village and then stop. Soldiers disembark. The villagers look each other in the eye, searching for words of comfort, but there are none. Our children ask us why this is happening, but we have no answers.'

Man stabs deli workers over years-old grudge over sandwich toppings

Two New Jersey deli workers have been stabbed by an angry customer who was unhappy with a sandwich he had received years ago. The unnamed man stormed into a New Jersey bakery and sandwich shop at around 8am Thursday morning and slashed two brothers with a box cutter over a sandwich order he says was messed up four years ago. The bizarre attack went down at Baladna Bakery on Main Street in Paterson when brothers Abed and Mohammad Assad were opening shop for the day. Surveillance video captured the moment the enraged man burst into the store and confronted a female cashier before ranting on about a years-old hot dog order. 'He said "she forgot to give me the hot dog." OK, take the hot dog and $3 and just leave,' Moneer Simrin, a friend of the victims told NBC4. 'And he's like "No, because I got a sandwich last time and they gave me some eggplant and I don't like eggplant." He's just looking for a problem,' she added. The brothers tried to calm the man down and even offered store credit. But the suspect allegedly became enraged, and that's when he pulled out a box cutter. 'They tried to tell him "Just leave, please." And he got the knife,' Simrin said. The man allegedly slashed Abed Assad in the chest and Mohammad on his hand and arm before running off. Graphic footage from a neighboring insurance business shows the suspect fleeing the shop. Photos show Assad with his arm wrapped in thick white bandages from elbow to wrist. He told NBC New York he recognized the attacker from four years ago and said the man had even come by the bakery earlier in the week asking for them by name. According to Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, the man was upset because he had received an eggplant sandwich instead of his egg sandwich he supposedly had ordered four years ago. 'They're concerned,' Sayegh told CBS. 'This type of thing does not happen in that area.' 'I tried to assuage some of the fears, allay their concerns and reassure them that the police department is completely focused on bringing whomever is responsible for this tragic, violent incident to justice,' he added. The two victims were taken to Saint Joseph's University Hospital and were released on Friday. Police are still looking for the suspect.

100 football hooligans attack each other before 'friendly' on Canary Islands, as Spanish police rush in to stop thugs causing chaos

Spanish police were forced to rush in and break up a skirmish after 'around 100' football hooligans attacked each other during a pre-season friendly. CD Tenerife and UD Las Palmas squared off in a fiery Canary Islands derby showdown which boiled over into disgraceful scenes on Saturday. Footage taken before kick-off and shared widely across social media showed a large band of hooligans - many of whom were shirtless - abandoning their seats. They then marched around the side of the pitch and attempted to break into another stand, forcing the supporters there to quickly look to move away. According to Spanish publication El Partidazo de Cope, the videos showed travelling Las Palmas thugs leaving their designated area to try and attack home supporters. They appeared to throw multiple missiles toward the home section while some were even spotted attempting to launch barriers to cause maximum disruption. 🚨 ÚLTIMA HORA | Altercados en la previa del @CDTOficial y la @UDLP_Oficial del Trofeo Teide 😱 Se desplazaron entre 80 y 100 aficionados radicales del conjunto 'Pío-pío' 🚓 Tuvo que intervenir la Guardia Civil 📻 #PartidazoCOPE — El Partidazo de COPE (@partidazocope) August 2, 2025 Fortunately, police officers and La Guardia Civil were quick to rush to the scene. With both sets of supporters separated once more, the chaos fizzled out. Videos of the melee spread across X, with users disgusted with the disorder. 'A friendly, regrettable,' one account posted. 'They have tarnished the badge of UD Las Palmas and brought absolute shame,' another added. 'That said, not everyone on the other side will be saints either.' 'They don't know how to behave, they always get heated, and they don't represent the fans of the UD,' a third user damningly declared. A fourth wrote: 'One must be daft to organise a friendly derby!' Another viewer simply said: 'Morons being morons.' The Teide Trophy 'friendly' ended in a 1-1 draw and went to penalties. Tenerife went on to claim the bragging rights after winning the shootout 4-1, ensuring they got their hands on the silverware after a fractitious afternoon.

Watford FC diversity officer screamed 'Go back to your country, you bloody Indians' as she brawled with railway staff

A Watford FC diversity officer screamed 'Go back to your country, you bloody Indians' while throwing punches at Southall station during a violent confrontation with railway staff, a court has heard. University graduate Ebonnie-Rose John-Jules, 23, is the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Championship club 's Community Sports & Education Trust. She was travelling with her friend Naomi Caruana, 23, on May 5 last year when they got into an ugly row with Transport for London (TfL) employee Sasha Da Cunha, who was aided by her colleague Tom Kakeeto. It was around 6.30pm and Mr Kakeeto had just finished his shift at the Elizabeth Line station, so was heading home on his bike, Prosecutor Tom Heslop told City of London Magistrates' Court. 'He was at the gate when he heard a verbal altercation between the two defendants and his colleague,' the prosecutor said. 'He asked them to be civil and that attracted them towards him. 'Without provocation John-Jules kicks his bike into him and he grabs hold of her, causing John-Jules to fall over. 'She appears to then remove her earrings and launched into an attack on Mr Kakeeto, punching him to the face. 'This all occurs within the concourse of the railway station as the two defendants were coming out of the station. 'They are both attacking him, with the majority of the assault carried out by Caruana, but it did begin with John-Jules. 'Comments were made during this by John-Jules towards Ms Da Cunha, including: ''Go back to your country, you bloody Indians.'' 'She also says: ''I will not leave the station until I see him bleeding,'' and reference is also made to ''go back'' and ''f***ing Indians,'' explained Mr Heslop. John-Jules had denied the charges for over a year, but on the day of her trial finally pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Kakeeto, plus a count of racially-aggravated threatening behaviour. The court heard John-Jules, who graduated from the University of East London with a degree in Sports Physical Education and Development, has a previous conviction in 2022 for threatening behaviour. She began her full-time role at Watford FC in April last year, weeks before this offence, after a period employed by Children with Cancer UK as a Sports Events Administrator. John-Jules, of Towers Road, Southall also obtained a Master's degree in International Sports Management from the Global Institute of Sport. She was sentenced to a twelve-month community order, which includes 70 hours community service work up to five days of rehabilitation and must pay a £50 fine Her co-defendant Caruana, of Hounslow, pleaded guilty to assaulting both Mr Kakeeto and Ms Da Cunha and also damaging the male victim's EarPods. John-Jules was bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on September 11 for a pre-sentence report. 'We are going to keep all sentencing options open, including custody,' bench Chairman Paul Brooks told her. 'You have pleaded guilty to these offences and the most serious one is assault.' She was sentenced to a twelve-month community order, which includes 70 hours community service work up to five days of rehabilitation and must pay a £50 fine. Caruana was also ordered to pay a total of £120 compensation to Mr Kakeeto; £50 compensation to Ms Da Cunha, plus £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge. 'It is a group attack, unprovoked and is sustained for approximately forty-four seconds,' Mr Heslop told the court. 'There were some injuries sustained, an injury to Mr Kakeeto's chin although it is not known which defendant inflicted it, but they were acting in concert. 'The comments seemed to have been directed towards Ms Da Cunha.' In his victim impact statement Mr Kakeeto said: 'During the incident I was scared and fearful. It was a shock to be attacked like that and uncalled for. 'I do not wear my uniform to and from work anymore so I am not recognised and it has knocked my confidence.' Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust said in a statement: 'Today we have learnt of the incredibly disappointing news of a former employee of the Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust being convicted of a serious offence. 'We have zero tolerance for any form of discrimination or violence and are proud, in partnership with Watford FC, to be one of only two clubs that currently hold the EFL Gold level of the EDI Code of Conduct and the Advanced Health Check Level of Premier League Equality, Diversity Inclusion Standard. 'The former member of staff failed to disclose the arrest, investigation or proceedings against her as is expected and required in accordance with company policy. Had the Trust been made aware, the member of staff would have been suspended as per company pending the outcome of the police investigation. Once found guilty, the member of staff would have been instantly dismissed for gross misconduct. 'The Community Trust will continue to review its current policy and practices around disclosure of police matters involving employees. 'Finally and wholeheartedly we would like to pass on our sincere thoughts and best wishes to the victim and we hope the sentence imposed by the Court provides reassurance to them and the community as a whole that such behaviour is not and cannot be tolerated in our society.'
