Clovis West's hope for top-seed in the CIF Open Division were dashed. ‘Very disappointed'
The Golden Eagles are seeded No. 2 in the Northern California behind top-seed Archbishop Mitty.
After Saturday's Central Section Division I win over Clovis, Golden Eagles coach Craig Campbell felt it was his team and Mitty fighting for the 1-2 seed. He was right, but he had hoped his team would get the top-seed based off a 32-0 undefeated record.
'Very disappointed,' he said Sunday.
Perhaps the selection committee saw one common opponent between the two. Both played Pinewood. Clovis West defeated Pinewood 54-50 in the Bay Area and Mitty beat Pinewood 59-51 in the Central Coast championship at Santa Clara.
Following Saturday's win, Campbell laid out why they should be the No. 1 seed.
'Mitty's a tremendous team and it's no knock, but since they've lost their best player for the year, they did lose three games. Three games to nationally ranked teams. Really good teams, but how do you discredit Clovis West, who's been the only team that's been in the Open Division every year in the entire state over Mitty and all the others,' Campbell said.
'To go 32-0, travel 7,500 miles and beat a state champion and a state runner-up, like how do you say no this team is still better than you. We played the last three years and our season ended at Mitty. I feel like our kids earned the 1 at worst the 2. You go down the list of the three through what's probably eight ... It's a gauntlet. It's going to be a dog fight. You could be one and done and still have had a hell of a year.'
Nevertheless, the Golden Eagles will await the winner between No. 3 San Ramon Valley or No. 6 Pinewood.
On the line for Clovis West is keeping its undefeated record intact.
'Both those teams are outstanding,' Campbell said. 'Their coaches are good friends of ours. It's going to be a great game either way. At the end of the day you got to go out and win.'
Clovis will play in Division I and earned the No. 2 seed and will host No. 15 Oak Ridge.
On the boys side, Fresno Christian earned the top-seed in Division IV and will face No. 16 Citrus Hill in a SoCal Regional game.
The Eagles took care of business Friday defeating Monache 73-50.
Also receiving a top-seed is the Immanuel girls in NorCal Division III.
The Eagles will meet No. 16 East Union.
Immanuel won the Division IV title after a 58-36 victory over Santa Ynez.
Round 1 begins Tuesday at the host sites at 7 p.m.

When it comes to kicking in football, high-pressure situations come with the territory. It could be a last-second field goal attempt, an extra-point kick to break an overtime tie, or a punt to pin the opponent deep on its side of the field. Luke Wainwright, Noah Menard, Sam Smith, Cameron Bonin, Payton Crawford, Braylon Beard, and Monte Farmer are a few of the returning starters in Southwest Louisiana looking to use their precision kicking to help their high school football teams in tough situations. Luke Wainwright Wainwright, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound senior, experienced a tricky situation firsthand last year. With 15 seconds on the clock in Grand Lake's Non-select Division IV bi-district playoff game against Jonesboro-Hodge, he drilled a 22-yard field goal for a 23-20 win. Earlier in the season, he made a 35-yarder, which was the second-longest in Southwest Louisiana in 2024 behind St. Louis Catholic's Zachry Sugandi- Pruitt's 53-yarder. Wainwright, who also plays golf and was the Division IV state runner-up medalist, made 33 of 37 point-after attempts. He will also see time at wide receiver this year. 'He has done really well this offseason,' said head coach Jeff Wainwright, Luke's uncle. 'I think he gained a lot of confidence last year, especially at the end of the year against Jonesboro-Hodge when he had a game-winning field goal. Those are big things for kids to bring back to the table the next year. He's already been in those pressure situations.' Sam Smith Before Smith became South Beauregard's kicking specialist last season, he made a name for himself on the soccer pitch. He scored a single-season school record 45 goals in his junior year. On the gridiron, Smith (6-2, 185) made 33 of 35 PATs, and head coach Brad Kellogg is looking for him to keep teams from getting any yardage off kickoffs. 'He's a soccer kid,' Kellogg said. 'Matter of fact, possibly a scholarship soccer kid, and he's got a strong leg. 'We're really hoping he can kick it in the end zone like St. Louis every time. He's really been working on that. We don't kick a lot of field goals. He's so strong-legged. He just keeps trying to get that ball in the end zone every time.' Payton Crawford Crawford (5-9, 180) made the 5-2A all-district second team as a freshman last season. Oakdale head coach Kevin Bertrand sees his young kicker continually improving after making 11 of 17 kicks last year and will use him at receiver. 'He's been working on it all summer, and he's been doing a good job,' Bertrand said. 'We know going in that he's a guy that understands what we're trying to do.' Menard, Bonin, Farmer, and Beard spread their talents all over the field at multiple positions. Noah Menard Menard plays all over the field for Hamilton Christian and earned all-district honors last season as a wide receiver, placekicker, and punter. He made 30 of 47 PATs, caught 20 passes for 216, and scored six total touchdowns. Braylon Beard Beard (6-1, 175) was the 5-2A second team all-district punter last season made 62 tackles with five sacks and eight tackles for a loss on defense. This year, he will start at defensive end and tight end and is working to learn to play offensive line. Cameron Bonin Bonin, a 5-9, 160-pound senior, was an all-district first team and American Press All-Southwest Louisiana Small Schools punter. He also plays quarterback and defensive back for Lake Arthur. As a junior, he averaged 38.7 yards a punt, made 19 of 27 PATs, and kicked a 22-yard field goal. Running the offense, he completed 36 of 77 passes for 870 yards and nine touchdowns, splitting time with fellow senior Jaxson Davis. Monte Farmer Farmer is a 6-8, 175-pound senior two-sport athlete. He averaged 38.7 yards per punt for Washington-Marion while running the offense at quarterback with 1,442 passing yards and eight touchdowns. The multi-faceted athlete has also played receiver at times and was the American Press All-Southwest Louisiana Big School basketball MVP last season. He averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks a game while playing nearly every position on the court.

Ranked 4,292nd in the world, Edina golfer Jimmy Abdo soars at U.S. Amateur
Ranked 4,292nd in the world, Jimmy Abdo had no place making as much noise at the U.S. Amateur as he did. But he did it anyway. "Still kinda doesn't feel real," said Abdo, 1.5 days removed from arriving back in Minnesota. "Just from start to finish it felt like it was gonna be one of those weeks I'll never forget." A native of Edina, Minnesota, Abdo plays Division III golf. This weekend's field featured all of the prestigious players in the college game. Abdo got through stroke play, his goal, then won in the rounds of 64, 32 and 16, before finally falling in the quarters. "Yeah, we just kept playing some good golf. Took down some pretty big names. Obviously I surpassed my goal by a mile," he said. "Even beyond that, too, I made a big name for myself and put my name out there for a lot of people to see and hear my story." Abdo wasn't even on the starting six at Edina High School until he was a junior. His best finish at the state tournament was 11th, which led him to start his college golf career last year at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. "That's the really amazing thing about Jimmy and his game, a lot of people back down against tough competition and it actually allows him to go to the next level," said Scott Moe, Gustavus' head golf coach. Abdo has been passed over by big college programs. He's learned to relish the underdog role. "I think that's my favorite part about it. It's fun to be the guy that no one thinks belongs there or really can get the job done," he said. Anonymous no more, Abdo's ranking will soon skyrocket. One week, opening big doors for the future. "I honestly don't know. There's a bunch of things that could possibly happen and I haven't really made any full decisions yet, so I'm not 100% sure," he said.

Lions rookie edge rusher Hassanein out with pectoral injury
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions rookie edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein's status for the season may be in question after he sustained a pectoral injury in Saturday's preseason loss. Coach Dan Campbell said on Monday that Hassanein, the first Egyptian drafted into the NFL, will be down for 'a while.' Hassanein was selected in the sixth round to help shore up the edge rusher position. When asked whether Hassanein will return this season, Campbell said, 'Good question, I don't have that answer yet.'' Campbell said it's difficult for a rookie to lose time in training camp. 'You hate it for those guys, first because nobody feels worse than they do. He puts in the work and he wants it,'' Campbell said. 'It's tough when it's a young guy because you build so much of what you are — your foundation — in your first two years.'' Campbell appreciates that Hassanein was able to get in at least half of camp. 'The good news with that kid is he's a grinder. He will do everything it takes, you already know that — he'll do everything it takes to heal up, to rehab, to be back, he's going to stay in it mentally, learn what he can, process what he can. That's always going to give you a chance to be better when you come back," Campbell said. Safety Kerby Joseph (knee) was among others, who did not participate in Monday's practice. 'It's something he's been dealing with a little bit. He won't be out there today. We're hoping he's back late in the week. That's the hope right now,'' Campbell said. 'We don't feel it's a major problem, it's just something we're trying to manage right now and get it calmed down.'' Tight end Sam LaPorta has been out since Aug. 14 with an unspecified injury. He was on the sideline watching practice. Campbell had no update on safety Morice Norris, who was taken by ambulance off the field in Atlanta on Aug. 8. He remains in concussion protocol and it's to be determined if he will play this season. 'We're being very thorough with this. He's doing well, he's doing good right now. I don't want to go that far, I just know he's down today and we'll keep going,'' Campbell said. "Hopefully, by the end of the week we can get him worked into a few things," Campbell said. 'I don't know if he'll play (Saturday) or not, but this is a step in the right direction.' The Lions face the Houston Texans in a joint practice on Thursday. The teams meet Saturday at Ford Field to close out the preseason.
