Pearly-Thinaah break boundaries in 'Battle of the Sexes' face-off

KUALA LUMPUR: Sparks are set to fly in Bukit Kiara tomorrow (April 22) as Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah take on men's pair Kang Khai Xing-Lok Hong Quan in a rare and explosive "Battle of the Sexes" showdown during the Sudirman Cup simulation matches.
The women's doubles world No. 5 are relishing the chance to spar against the men's back-up pair in what promises to be one of the most eye-catching matchups of the simulation session at Academy Badminton Malaysia.
And that's not all.
The day will also see world No. 2 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani go toe-to-toe with newly crowned Asian champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in a mouth-watering clash.
The BA of Malaysia (BAM) have shaken things up this time, tossing out the traditional five-match Sudirman Cup format in favour of a mix-and-match set-up designed to give all 20 players high-intensity warm-up battles ahead of the tournament in Xiamen from April 27-May 4.
"This simulation is about quality practice and involving the entire squad," said national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky. "Pearly-Thinaah and Tang Jie-Ee Wei will test themselves against men's pairs — it's all part of building confidence and readiness."
Mixed doubles Chan Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei will face men's pair Goh Boon Sze-Wee Yee Hern, while world No. 3 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai take on Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin in another duel.
In the men's singles, world No. 26 Leong Jun Hao will square off with world No. 46 Liew Daren, adding further fire to the all-star sparring slate.
The centralised training wraps up on Wednesday (April 23), with the team jetting off to Xiamen the next day.

Asian meet top seed Rachel gets a shot at redemption in Kuching

Rachel Arnold. - PSA Squash Tour PETALING JAYA: National squash player Rachel Arnold has a chance to erase a four-year bitter disappointment at the Asian Championships when the tournament starts on Tuesday in Kuching, Sarawak. The world No. 19 Rachel clearly has not forgotten how close she came to becoming the Asian champion for the first time in 2021. Then she fought hard but let slip a good chance when she lost to Hong Kong's Tong Tsz Wing in the women's final in Pakistan. National head coach Ajaz Azmat believes Rachel has been on a good trajectory heading to Kuching, after making it to the Squash On Fire Open finals in April. Her only recent blemish was being handed an upset at the British Open last month when she fell to world No. 34 Kenzy Ayman of Egypt in the opening round. "Rachel has been doing well. It was just at the British Open that she fell off slightly,' said Ajaz. "But she is determined to do well in the Asian Championships in her home country. It will also be important for her to do well to maintain her top 20 rankings." Rachel is the top seed for the Asian meet after compatriot S. Sivasangari and Japan's Satomi Watanabe withdrew from the tournament. World No. 7 Watanabe and world No. 8 Sivasangari won't be competing in Kuching as they got their spots to play in the PSA World Tour Finals in Toronto, Canada, from June 23-27. Watanabe was initially the top seed while Sivasangari was second. National coaching director Andrew Cross also echoed Ajaz's sentiment on Rachel's chance this year. "She's the top seed, and I'm sure she will be in good shape to compete with a hope of winning her first Asian title," he said. The last Malaysian to be Asian champion was Nicol David in 2015, when she defeated Hong Kong's Annie Au in Kuwait. Other Malaysians gunning for the title also include the Azman sisters, Aira and Aifa, who are second and fifth seed, respectively.

$mash and carry Pearly-Thinaah

KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah may not rival their counterparts, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in prize money winnings, but they have pocketed a sizeable amount too. Pearly-Thinaah have already pocketed RM614,511 from the World Tour in the first half of this year alone. They earned the hundreds of thousands from 10 tournaments with the biggest purse coming from last week's Indonesia Open where they took home US$50,750 (RM214,670. Earlier in the year, they earned RM158,689 for their Thailand Open triumph. Their other winnings came from the Indonesia Masters (RM76,368, second place) and India Open (RM56,275, semi-finals). However, the narrow defeat (23-25, 21-12, 21-19) to China's world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu-Tang Ning in the Indonesia Open final saw Pearly-Thinaah miss the RM453,478 first prize. Money aside, Pearly-Thinaah also achieved a career high world No. 3 ranking by moving up a spot this week. Remarkably, Pearly-Thinaah's winnings this season even outstripped current men's doubles world No. 1 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani who have earned RM427,849 from eight tournaments this year. World No. 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik raked in RM818,912 in total prize money from 10 tournaments and won three titles. Pearly-Thinaah will resume their hunt for more honours and money at the Japan Open from July 15-20 which offers RM265,782 for the women's doubles top prize.
