The Cotswolds has become a victim of its own beauty as the hordes of tourists visiting the region continue to cause trouble for locals. Traffic chaos has been rife with coach buses dropping off camera-happy tourists each day.
That said, the hunt for an equally beautiful but less crowded alternative staycation destination is well under way. One destination in Lincolnshire has distinguished itself with rolling hills, quaint cottages and hidden valleys—some of the best natural scenes in the East Midlands.
The Lincolnshire Wolds has all the best elements of the Cotswolds but without the headache-inducing crowds and coach bus traffic. Designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty, the Lincolnshire Wolds sits mid-way between Lincoln and the coast, surrounded by the relatively flat fens, coastal marsh and the Lincoln Clay Vale. It comes after images show the cheapest seaside spot in England is full of abandoned £40k homes 'nobody wants'.
Home to 216 square miles (558 square kilometres) of countryside, these Wolds are perfect for active nature enthusiasts and avid walkers. There are also market towns where you can enjoy a traditional day out and the Hubbard Hills close to Louth is a popular picnic spot for families.

Craig Hicks completed his right arm sleeve with the words "nothing beats a Jet2 holiday" alongside the budget airline's logo. The 37-year-old man says he is "a big fan" of Jet2, having flown with the company dozens of times since it commenced operations under its current guise in 2003. The plane enthusiast, from Telford, Shropshire, insists his family and friends "absolutely love" the giant inking. Jet2's catchy slogan has become somewhat of a trend on social media, as it has been used in more than two million videos on TikTok the summer. "I just thought it's quite topical at the moment, why not? It's just so popular at the moment... "I'll be getting it out on that flight definitely. All my friends keep saying I could get a free holiday out of this! A freebie would be nice," Craig, who is an ambulance controller, said. The body art, which cost Craig £300 on Wednesday August 6, finishes his his "aviation sleeve", which already featured a concord and jet engine. The regular flyer, who has a trip to Tenerife booked soon, continued: "I just love anything to do with planes. To finish my sleeve, I had a load of gaps and wasn't sure what to put there. "I love Jess Glynne and love that song. I recently flew with Jet2 to Madeira. I just thought it would be ace to get 'nothing beats a Jet2 holiday'. "I like Jet2 and thought it would be cool. It's my favourite British airline. I'm definitely a big fan of them. I love everything to do with aviation." Jet2 has used Jess Glynne's song Hold My Hand in its adverts - and on its planes - for nearly ten years. In one iconic TV advert, which first in January 2024, a family of four race with excitement towards the airline's check-in desk, and gleefully board a Jet2 plane, high-fiving the cabin crew in the process - all in cohesion to Glynne's tuneful number. But the "nothing beats a Jet2 holiday" slogan this summer has been used playfully on TikTok by tourists who have encountered holiday bloopers or mishaps - with any airline. Reflecting on the social media trend, Craig continued: "I'm definitely going to show it to Jet2 staff when I next fly with them to Tenerife in December... All my friends and family absolutely love it. My mum said I was mad."

An underrated UK seaside town boasts stretches of sandy beaches, rock pools for the kids and a picturesque harbour - and the bonus of not being packed with crowds Brits looking to get inspired for their next staycation may want to check out one underrated seaside town with a pretty marina, sandy beaches and a lido at low tide for kids to enjoy. North Berwick in Scotland isn't a hidden gem but it has all of the perks of a seaside town, without having huge crowds of tourists that you might find in other UK holiday hotspots. I visited the town in early August when it was hot, sunny and the town was hosting the Fringe by the Sea festival, so I was fully prepared to deal with a mass of fellow tourists. However I was pleasantly surprised; although it was a little busy no doubt because of the festival, there was still plenty of breathing space to enjoy a stroll around the town and along the waterfront. (It has more of a buzz than England's cheapest seaside spot full of abandoned £40k homes 'nobody wants'). Despite it being a heatwave day, the sandy stretches of beach were not too crowded either. There were plenty of families set up for the day with their towels, sandcastle tools and picnic baskets at the ready, but there was still plenty of space if you wanted to set up camp yourself. Low tide reveals an enclosed tidal pool with shallow waters which was a hit with families, especially those with young children. There were also plenty of rock pools for them to explore, and of course those all-important ice cream trucks just a stone's throw away. Along the beaches sits a long promenade lined with waterfront homes, and it's an easy stroll from one end to another (the whole thing took me about half an hour to walk). For bird watchers, there's plenty you'll want to explore. For a start North Berwick is home to the Scottish Seabird Centre, while the beach offers views across the water to the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock, which plays host to the world's largest northern gannet colony. As for the town itself, it's got that quintessential seaside charm. There's a pretty marina full of boats, cobbled streets lined with colourful buildings, plenty of cafés and a host of ice cream parlours. We were told by locals that Alandas Gelato was a must-try, but sadly the queue was just a bit too long. Those queues were no doubt because the town was hosting the annual Fringe by the Sea festival. This brilliant alternative to the main Fringe festival in Edinburgh has a very laidback vibe and it's family-friendly. There were heaps of food and drink stalls, a crafts tent for kids, and included a big top tent where you could book tickets to watch a series of talks and performances. For those who like to pick up a souvenir or two, there were local shops selling some of their merchandise too. This year's festival has come to a close but you can find out more on It's definitely one I'll be returning too; the laidback atmosphere, the festival and the pretty beach made for a brilliant day out, and the fact it's around an hour's drive away from Edinburgh means it's easily doable as part of a wider Scottish road trip.
