Arteta's plan for star labelled 'sometimes good, sometimes bad' by man himself

Daily Mirror20-05-2025

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal have been beset by injuries this season and despite only just making his return to the side, Kai Havertz and his best position has already been questioned
Mikel Arteta has admitted that Kai Havertz 's versatility is one of his biggest strengths - despite the German not agreeing. He has played a number of positions during his spell with both the Gunners and former side Chelsea.
Havertz has played in roles up front, albeit his goalscoring ability has been questioned in that particular position. Meanwhile, the former Bayer Leverkusen man has also been stationed in midfield on occasion.

With the German international making his return to action against Newcastle at the weekend following a long injury lay-off, Arsenal boss Arteta has admitted that his skill to play anywhere asked off him is a huge bonus.

Speaking after the slender 1-0 win against the Magpies, he said: 'One of the biggest qualities with Kai is his versatility and his goal threat whenever he plays and he's so intelligent. He will play as a No9, he will play as an attacking midfielder - and he will be super important for us as a team.'
Meanwhile, Havertz has already spoken out on his position. While he claims that he is happy to help Arsenal wherever they might need him, a constantly changing position might not always be beneficial.
Speaking earlier this season, he said: "I don't know how many times I answered this question already. I'm just happy to be on the pitch. I'm not a player who only plays in one position. Sometimes it's good, sometimes its bad, but it suits me quite well. I just love it in this team.
"I love to play as the false nine, the eight, as the No10, wherever you want me to go. In Germany. I played as a left-back as well, so it's all good."
That attitude is certainly different to the one Havertz had with his first club Bayer Leverkusen, where he suggested he favoured being away from the frontline. Speaking at the time, he said: "I would say the No.8 position, inside right. I'm not a classic No.10, but I like to have the ball at my feet, simply enjoying myself on the pitch.

"I've played in many other positions, but I prefer to play in the centre, where I have more of the ball. My dream will always be to wear the No.10 one day at my club.'
Havertz, 25, joined Arsenal from Chelsea in 2023. He has gone on to score 29 goals in 86 outings for the North London side since then.

Mikel Arteta brought in Cherries keeper Neto on Deadline Day last term on loan after selling Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton for £25m. The Arsenal boss had hoped to sign Espanyol's Joan Garcia, 25, for around £25m to compete with No.1 David Raya next campaign. But it is understood that Barcelona are winning the race for Garcia, leaving Arteta to switch to other targets, and views the Kepa deal as a real bargain. Arteta has been a fan of Kepa for some time, valuing his ability to play out from the back, although there are doubts over whether Kepa would settle for a back-up option. SunSport understands that several clubs across Europe are also interested in the ex-Athletic Bilbao man, with some of them able to offer an appetising first-choice role. It is understood that Setford is highly rated by Arteta, viewing him as a first-team player of the future. Arsenal will also welcome back Karl Hein this summer, who spent last season on loan at Real Valladolid. Hein signed a new contract before going out on loan and it is currently unclear what Arsenal's plans are for him this summer.

'If you want the player, pay the £85m' - fan views on Kudus

We asked for your views on Mohammed Kudus being linked with a move to Chelsea in a cash-plus-player deal. Here are some of your comments:Lewis: He has a release clause for a reason. If you want the player, pay the £85m. West Ham should hold firm on that. Yes, he had a poor season, but he's easily our second or third-best Shame to lose Kudus, but he's had a poor season. I don't think taking Sanchez in part-exchange is a good idea! Chelsea will be getting a great deal, and we will be getting worse, unbelievable!Rich: Feels like a no-brainer to part ways if we can get the sort of money his release clause dictates. It's been documented that we need to sell to fund purchases, and need to give Potter a chance to build his squad his way. It's either Paqueta or Kudus who has to go to raise that sort of money, and I think Paqueta has demonstrated a better attitude and quality, Kudus has been a no-show all season. He obviously wants to move on, and it's on someone else's stool. Let him go if we can get such a good price for him. Given this season's showing, £85m is worth grabbing and using productively on someone who fits Potter's Kudus was a breath of fresh air when he joined, but the drop-off in performance has been astounding. Down on goals and assists, but more worryingly has shown not to have the awareness of players around him, and has been too greedy with the ball. If he could be back to the level of his first season, he is quality, but I fear his head has been turned and he has wanted to leave for a while, resulting in a flat performance on the pitch.
