‘I heard a baby crying': Sg Petani resident finds newborn left naked by roadside; cops nab secondary schooler for abandoning child, partner in hospital
Kuala Muda police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said police received a call reporting the matter at 9.55 am.
'A resident who was hanging out clothes heard loud cries and began searching the area. She screamed upon discovering the baby lying by the roadside.
'Neighbours quickly came out to help, moving the baby to a safer spot before contacting the police,' he said in a media statement today.
He added that there were no surveillance cameras in the area where the baby was found.
'The baby was taken to the Emergency Unit of Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for further examination.
'Medical checks confirmed the baby was in stable condition, with only minor scratches on the right eye and right side of the body,' said Hanyan.
He added that following the discovery, a 17-year-old male secondary school student has been remanded for two days, from yesterday, to assist with the investigation.
'A 19-year-old female, believed to be his partner, has been admitted to the hospital for further examination and treatment. Investigations are ongoing, and the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code,' he said. — Bernama

Customs seizes over 100kg of cannabis worth RM10 million in major smuggling bust at Rantau Panjang
KOTA BHARU, July 28 — The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) foiled an attempt to smuggle 102.178 kilogrammes of cannabis flowers worth more than RM10 million in operations conducted at the Rantau Panjang Free Duty Zone last April 23. Kelantan Customs director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long, in a statement issued here today, said the first seizure involved 88 transparent plastic packets suspected of containing cannabis flowers in three bags found at Gate 1 of the duty-free zone at about 10.30am. He said the second seizure was from a female motorcyclist who was found carrying a bag with 32 transparent plastic packets containing a similar substance. 'Following investigation, the woman led the Customs team to the Rantau Panjang Express Bus Stop at 11am, where the team arrested a man and a woman after finding two bags containing 60 transparent plastic packets suspected of containing cannabis flowers, ' read the statement. He said overall, six bags containing 180 packets of cannabis flowers weighing more than 100 kilogrammes and estimated to be worth RM10,013,444 were seized. 'The syndicate's modus operandi was to smuggle cannabis flowers through illegal bases along Sungai Golok, before bringing them into the Rantau Panjang Free Duty-Zone area. 'All the suspects arrested are locals aged between 30 and 45. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,' he said. — Bernama

EAIC task force: Immigration officers abused power in medical visa approvals, alleged syndicate case referred to AGC
PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) said today it found abuse of power and procedural weaknesses in the issuance of medical visas to foreign nationals by Immigration Department officers. It has since referred its findings to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), recommending charges against the officers under the Penal Code, the Immigration Act 1959/63, and/or the Passports Act 1966. 'The Special Task Force found that there was abuse of power by Immigration officers who approved medical visas for foreign nationals from several countries,' it said in a statement here. '[This is despite them] being aware that the applications submitted were incomplete and did not comply with the provisions outlined in Immigration Circular No. 10/2001.' It said the investigation was carried out by a Special Task Force formed under Section 17 of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission Act 2009, and led by EAIC Commissioner Datuk Seri Razali Ab. Malik. The task force had reviewed irregularities in the medical visa approval process, including an examination of procedural compliance, witness interviews, document seizures, and the preparation of appropriate recommendations for further action by the authorities. In October last year, EAIC said it seized 156 Social Visit Pass (Medical Treatment Pass category) application files believed to be linked to a medical visa syndicate involving Immigration Department officers. This came after Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban confirmed that the EAIC had visited the Immigration headquarters to conduct further investigations into alleged breaches of integrity involving officers from the department. Reports stated that the syndicate, which had allegedly been operating for some time, had granted medical visas to foreign nationals to enter the country, supposedly for medical services. In February this year, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the EAIC had called in 22 Immigration Department officers to assist in the investigation.
