Air quality statement continues for GTA as wildfire smoke drifts into region

Yahoo4 days ago
Toronto is among the most polluted cities in the world on Sunday morning as much of Ontario remains under an air quality statement.
The statement is currently in effect for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) as wildfire smoke continues to drift into the region.
Environment Canada says the smoke is expected to drift south this afternoon and evening, with conditions possibly continuing on Monday.
The statement is also in effect for Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Burlington, Oakville, Halton Hills, Milton, Pickering and Oshawa.
Toronto ranked third in a list of the world's most polluted cities as of Sunday morning, according to a global ranking by IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company.
The smoke is expected to cause reduced visibility, which Environment Canada says can fluctuate over short distances and vary considerably on an hourly basis.
Environment Canada is suggesting vulnerable populations limit time outdoors and consider rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events. Symptoms can include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, a cough, wheezing and chest pains.
The national weather agency is also advising people to keep their windows and doors closed, prioritize keeping cool and checking in on others who live nearby who are more likely to be impacted by outdoor air pollution.

Firefighters grapple with France's largest wildfire in decades

STORY: :: August 6, 2025 :: Firefighters work through the night against France's largest wildfire in decades :: Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, France :: Officials say at least one person has died Reuters video showed flames in the trees in in the village of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, about 30 kilometres from the city of Perpignan, while firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze. One person died in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, the prefecture said. The fire, which spread very rapidly through forests and villages, has burnt down at least 25 houses, forcing residents and tourists to flee. Many roads are closed. So far, over 15,000 hectares have burned. That is similar to the total area that burned across all of France in several of the past years, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said. He added this was the biggest area burnt by one single fire in France since 1949. The prefecture said the fire was progressing "very quickly" and that nearly 2,000 firefighters were trying to bring it under control. Around 2,500 households in the area were currently without electricity, it said.

Deadly 'unprecedented' wildfire rages in southwestern France

What is the current fire situation in France? More than 2,100 firefighters are still battling an intense wildfire in the Corbieres hills in a Mediterranean region of France near the border to Spain. They are supported by some 90 firefighting planes, including water bombers, and 40 helicopters, according to the latest update by the Aude prefecture, which leads the affected local government department. From Thursday, several dozen soldiers and three army helicopters will help battle the fire, which broke out Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude region, a rural, wooded area home to wineries. The blaze has since swept through 16,000 hectares. Authorities described it as the largest fire in nearly 80 years. Michael Sabot, the deputy director of Aude fire department, told France's BFM-TV late on Wednesday that the flames "certainly" wouldn't be brought under control on Thursday. This is because of the "unfavorable weather conditions," he said, as higher temperatures and strong winds of more than 40 kilometers per hour (25 miles per hour) forecast for Thursday would further dry out vegetation. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered the bloc's help early on Thursday morning to help bring the fires under control. Scale of the fire is 'unprecedented' French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou called the fire a "catastrophe of unprecedented scale," during a visit to the region earlier on Wednesday. This was the biggest area to be burnt in a single fire since 1949, he added. "What is happening today is linked to global warming and linked to drought," Bayrou said. One dead, one missing and 13 injured One person has died from the fire, 13 others were injured, including two seriously. An elderly woman died in her home, at least one person is missing and two people were injured, one of whom is now in critical condition with severe burns, according to the Aude prefecture. Of those injured, nine are firefighters. Several campsites and at least one village have been evacuated in the region, which is popular with tourists. Jacques Piraux, mayor of the tiny rural village of Jonquieres, said all residents had been evacuated. "It's a scene of sadness and desolation," he told BFM TV after visiting there on Wednesday morning. "It looks like a lunar landscape, everything is burned. More than half or three-quarters of the village has burned down. It's hellish." "I left everything behind me," said David Cerdan, a 51-year-old who fled the village of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, where the elderly woman died. "I'm putting it into perspective. I only have material damage," said Cerdan, who lived near the victim. More than a dozen roads are closed around the region. The A9 motorway, parts of which were closed Tuesday into Wednesday, reopened Wednesday afternoon after the wind changed direction. The A9 is a major route for trucks traveling to and from southern Spain. It experiences heavy traffic in the summer due to tourists traveling along the French and Spanish Mediterranean coast. One dead, 13 injured in France wildfire spanning area greater than Paris

One person has died and 13 were injured amid France's largest wildfire in decades, French officials said Wednesday evening, as thousands of firefighters battled a blaze in the south larger than the area of Paris. Approximately 2,100 firefighters and 500 vehicles — including planes and helicopters — were deployed to fight the fire, said French officials in the Aude prefecture, where the fire broke out Tuesday. The officials said Wednesday night that the fire was spreading.
