RIJEKA 1-2 SHELBOURNE Shelbourne close in on Europa League history as John Martin header seals stunning comeback win over Rijeka in qualifier
JOHN MARTIN kept his head to keep Shelbourne's dreams of the Europa League group stages alive with a stunning comeback win over Rijeka.
After finding themselves behind to a Niko Jankovic penalty early in the second-half, the League of Ireland champions equalized through a Sam Bone header just minutes later.

And Martin completed the first leg comeback with a thumping header from a pinpoint Harry Wood cross to put Shels within 90 minutes of the play-offs.
While the Croatian champions dominated possession, they rarely looked like creating that clear cut chance to make it show on the scoreboard on Wednesday night.
That was as a result of Shelbourne's rearguard action that seemed to know exactly where every cross and every cutback was going to land.
By the time the first-half ended goalless, Rijeka had had six shots – three on target – while Shels had yet to take a crack at goal.

Their task was not made any easier when, just 17 minutes into the game, Sean Boyd pulled up and was eventually replaced by John Martin.
The first shot on target came after 22 minutes when another slick Rijeka move ended with a clever cutback in the direction of Amer Gojak on the edge of the box.
Under pressure from Harry Wood, he could only drill his shot harmlessly at Wessel Speel. For his efforts, Wood required treatment on a knock but was okay to continue.
Having soaked up the Croatian pressure with nary an incident, Shelbourne were able to retain enough confidence to enjoy a spell of possession themselves as the game ticked past the 35-minute mark.

James Norris and Kerr McInroy combined well down the left for the latter to send a low cross that was cut out while, later, Harry Wood's delivery from the same side was intercepted before it could reach Odubeko.
Amer Gojak had another go from range with a fierce drive that was put behind for a corner by Speel at the end of the first-half but that was as good as Rijeka could muster.

Both managers turned to the bench at half-time but the pattern of the game remained much the same, with Rijeka trying to unlock the door and Shelbourne happy to let them try.
And it took just ten minutes for the Dubliners to hand the correct key to them.

Sam Bone played a backpass to Speel. The goalkeeper's touch was poor, allowing Merveil Ndockyt to steal in.
Insult was added to injury as Speel, seeking to make up for his error, brought the forward down for the penalty which Niko Jankovic converted.
Rather than wallow, however, Shels hit back straight away.
Kerr McInroy's strike on 58 minutes, their first of the game, was blocked away for a corner, also their first of the day.

It was worked short and back to the Scot, whose cross found substitute Dan Kelly – on for Odubeko at the break - at the back stick.
He headed it back across the face, where Sam Bone arrived to knock it home on the line.
Speel went some way towards redeeming himself by tipping a rasping Justas Lasickas effort over the bar as play opened up.
Shels looked more confident and deliberate after the goal, however, and with less than 20 minutes to go, they took the lead.

Milan Mbeng found Harry Wood wide on the right. His cross was whipped with pace into the area where John Martin headed emphatically into the top corner.
It was backs against the wall in the final ten minutes and Rijeka felt they should have had a penalty for a Sam Bone handball in the final seconds.
After a VAR check, the appeals were waved away and Shels sealed the historic win.

Bohemians ace Niall Morahan admits envy at Shelbourne's Euro run but vows to seal own top-three spot

The ex-Sligo Rovers man says Bohs must use Shels' success as motivation in tonight's crucial Tolka Park derby clash SHEL SHOCK Bohemians ace Niall Morahan admits envy at Shelbourne's Euro run but vows to seal own top-three spot NIALL MORAHAN admitted that there is envy at Shelbourne's Euro run - and Bohemians must use that as motivation to make sure they are there next year. Bohs visit Tolka Park this evening for a crucial league game in the battle for a top three spot and European football next year. 2 Niall Morahan of Bohemians reckons they can make a push to finish in the LOI top three 2 Morahan praised rivals Shelbourne for their historic win over RIijeka but admitted there was envy And Morahan knows that Shels current position outside the top three will mean they will not be distracted by Tuesday's Europa League second leg against Rijeka. The Bohs star did not watch last Wednesday's stream of the first leg, when Shelbourne earned a historic 2-1 win. But he admitted there were mixed feelings about the result. He told SunSport: 'It's great to see. It was a great result and bringing that win back to Tolka for the second leg is massive for them. Overall it's good for the league. 'But it can be tough to watch because everyone else in the league wants to be like them. 'Players that have played in Europe know what it's like and want to be there again, and players that haven't played in it, that's the goal to get that and have those nights.' Morahan has Euro experience from his time at Sligo Rovers while several teammates have done it with Bohs in the past. He said: 'There is some experience but we don't talk about it. Our only aim is on making sure we get there first. 'I know it's cliche but you have to look at each game as it comes, and make sure we're there come the end of the season. 'Especially in the position we're in, it's up to us to get into European competition next year. 'We're in a good position right now and that is obviously the goal. With ten games to go, every game is important. Lookman to the Premier League? Arsenal and Forest in Transfer War 'It doesn't matter who it is against, but obviously it is bigger against the teams around you. And Shelbourne are on our tails at the moment so we need to beat them. 'It's important to pick up the three points in games like these because every point now is vital.' But he is sure Shelbourne will be ready for today's game with their own league position meaning no chance of easing off with Tuesday's Rijeka game in mind. He said: 'They've hit form themselves and turned things around in the league as well as Europe. 'They had a bit of a poor run, no more than ourselves earlier in the year, but have hit form now. 'Plus it's a Dublin derby which brings its own edge. This is my first season experiencing them and they are different to other games, but they are enjoyable.'

Derry City held by Cork City at Brandywell to damage European ambitions

League of Ireland Premier Division: Derry City 0 Cork City 0 Derry City 's European ambitions suffered a major blow as bottom of the table Cork City held Tiernan Lynch's team to a frustrating scoreless draw at Brandywell on Friday night. The Leesiders were good value for the draw, Ger Nash's men producing a superb defensive display which limited Lynch's team to only a handful of half chances on a night which could cost Derry dear as the season reaches its business end. You had to go back to November 2024, when Shelbourne's 1-0 victory secured the Premier Division title, for the last time Derry failed to score in a league match at the Brandywell. Indeed the Candy Stripes had beaten Cork in their last eight meetings between the teams but there was little sign of that superiority this time. Boos from the home support at the full-time whistle summed up the mood after a result which means Derry have taken only two points from the last 12, a run which has put a league challenge out of sight and left the Candy Stripes looking over their shoulder anxiously in the race for Europe. The Candystripes made two changes from the side who lost to Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght, Gavin White and Hayden Cann coming in for recently signing Dip Akinyemi and the suspended Alex Bannon. READ MORE Ger Nash, meanwhile, made one alteration to the Cork City side who defeated Galway to claim a massive three points last time out, Freddie Anderson named in place of Rio Shipston. Derry's previous home fixture against Bohemians was marred by trouble off the field but Derry trouble this was time on the pitch as they struggled to create a chance of note against the bottom of the table Leesiders. The home side saw plenty of the ball but neither keeper was stretched in a first half of little goalmouth action. Seani Maguire sent a shot well over with one of Cork's few foray's into the home half while Sadou Diallo and Michael Duffy were similarly wayward for Europe chasing Derry. Derry did have halfhearted penalty appeals waved away 20 minutes in when Adam O'Reilly went down as he tried to go past Cork's Matthew Kiernan while a Liam Boyce header and Duffy's low shot did eventually bring Conor Brann in action but few inside Brandywell were surprised when the half-time sounded with both clean sheets still intact. A delightful piece of Duffy skill out under the Southend Park stand did briefly rouse the home support upon the restart but there was no immediate second-half improvement from either side, though Cork's threat on the break was growing. Lynch's response was the 54th-minute introduction of summer signing Dip Akinyemi, with Danny Mullen and Ben Doherty, making only his 11th appearance of an injury-ravaged season, following from the bench soon after but little changed in terms of the home side's frustrations. Doherty fired one effort over the bar but if anything Cork, with only three league wins to their credit all season before kick-off, were looking the more likely on the counter as Derry struggled to make any inroads against a well organised, disciplined Cork rearguard. More than six minutes of injury-time offered brief hope but the home fans reaction on the whistle told you everything about a match that won't live long in the memory. Derry City: Brian Maher, Adam O'Reilly, Hayden Cann, Mark Connolly, Jamie Stott, Brandon Fleming (Ben Doherty, 62 mins); Sadou Diallo (Ronan Boyce, 72 mins), Carl Winchester, Michael Duffy, Gavin Whyte (Danny Mullen, 62min62 minsam Boyce (Dipo Akinyemi, 54 mins). Cork City: Conor Brann, Harry Nevin, Evan McLaughlin, Alex Nolan, Kitt Nelson (Kaedayn Kamara, 72 mins), Darragh Crowley, Josh Fitzpatrick, Matthew Kiernan, Freddie Anderson, Seani Maguire (Charlie Lutz, 80 mins), Rory Feely. Referee: Declan Toland (Athlone).
