Spicy Marg all set to take on her elders in Nunthorpe

Rhyl Journal3 days ago
An impressive winner on her Newmarket debut in early June, Michael Bell's charge subsequently disappointed in the Queen Mary and the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, but bounced back to form in some style over five furlongs at Goodwood two weeks ago.
As a juvenile filly Spicy Marg will carry just eight stone if she steps up to take on her elders at Group One level on the Knavesmire and Bell is keen to roll the dice.
He said: 'The plan is to give it a go. All the speed analysts seem to think she should be having a crack at it – her figures are very, very good – and she clearly is in very good form.
'I think it's very relevant her dam (Main Desire) won two Listed races over five furlongs on the Knavesmire, so it's in her genes she should like the track and I strongly think she will.
'We're very happy with her and very much looking forward to it.'
Connections are ready to pay the £40,000 supplementary fee to add Spicy Marg to the Nunthorpe field at the weekend, with Hong Kong-based rider Harry Bentley booked for the ride.
'Harry is waiting for his licence to be rubber-stamped by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, he tells me that's a formality, so the intention is for him to ride,' said Bell, who won the Nunthorpe in 2011 with Margot Did.
'She wants good, fast ground. We'll wait until Saturday to confirm it, but the intention is very much to supplement her at this stage.'
Another filly bound for the Nunthorpe is the William Knight-trained Frost at Dawn, who was a neck second to American Affair in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing fourth in the King George at Goodwood.
Knight said: 'She doesn't need to do much between now and then, she's put her weight back on already.
'I just hope and pray the rain stays away at York and if it's good to firm ground there I think she could run a massive race.
'I think she's in the form of her life at the moment, she just looks so much stronger this year, and I think York will really suit her as a track.
'I just think it's key that rain stays away and we get a good preparation from now into York. If she can repeat the form from her Ascot run, that puts her bang there.'

Stunning DAZN presenters refuse to bow to colleague's criticism with summer holiday photos

A group of DAZN football presenters who have come in for heavy criticism from a colleague for their choice of outfits while on air have refused to change their ways. Eleonora Incardona, 34, Giusy Meloni, 26, Diletta Leotta, 33 - who is the wife of former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius - and Maria Luisa Jacobelli, 33, have become recognisable names around the world thanks to their football coverage. The group all work for the Italian arm of DAZN's football coverage but came in for criticism from fellow football presenter Valentina Maceri, 31, who presents Champions League coverage for Swiss broadcaster Blue. She said the quartet's outfits, which have generated traction online, demonstrated little professionalism and said they 'lack style and class', before Maceri launched a personal attack on Incardona. Maceri, 31, said: 'Incardona mainly presents the betting odds. And she does it very sexy. Sometimes vulgarly.' Now, the group have posted images of themselves on their summer holidays, as they enjoyed some time off before the 2025-26 football seasons begins. Incardona sported a striking figure in a yellow bikini while another snap showed her taking in a sunset in a pink Versace dress. Meanwhile, Leotta, the wife of former Reds shot-stopper Karius, turned on the style in a patterned floral bikini while enjoying some time away in Sicily Jacobelli uploaded a fiery shot of her climbing out of a swimming pool in a black bikini while on holiday in Monaco. Incardona sported a striking figure in a yellow bikini while another snap showed her taking in a sunset in a pink Versace dress. Meanwhile, Leotta, the wife of former Reds shot-stopper Karius, turned on the style in a patterned floral bikini while enjoying some time away in Sicily. Meloni also looked in holiday mode as she posed with a brown bra, floral clutch and light-blue ripped jeans in a picture uploaded to her Instagram page last weekend. Despite earning some detractors for her clothing choices in a professional environment, Incardona was unphased. Speaking to Global Networker, she said: 'Style is clearly part of your personal and professional identity. 'How does fashion empower you in high-stakes, male-dominated environments like sports broadcasting? Fashion is my language. 'It helps me express who I am and feel confident, even in male-dominated or high-pressure environments. 'I never give up my femininity — on the contrary, I use it as a strength. When you feel good in your skin, you're ready for anything.' Incardona's comments come after Munich-based fashion expert and stylist Sonja Grau delivered a blunt verdict on one of Incardona's recent outfits - a skimpy, figure-hugging black dress. Grau did not hold back, labelling the presenter's outfit a no-go for the professional sports stage. 'It doesn't make a serious impression,' Grau told Bild. 'This is perfectly acceptable in leisure time, depending on the situation - for example, at the beach or a lake. 'But Ms. Incardona was in the business world, and that's not professional in any way and has nothing to do with style. 'Bare midriffs and that low neckline don't belong in the office either. It's fine in her free time, but everyone has to decide for themselves what they want to score with.'

Grieve honoured to return to Defender Burghley Horse Trials

Grieve, 43, will take to the saddle once more in three week's time at Burghley House in Stamford as he competes across three disciplines of show jumping, dressage and cross-country at the prestigious competition. The Leicestershire-based event rider will compete on Autograf, a 13-year-old British-bred sport horse, and will be cheered on by plenty of friends and family as he competes at the 5* event under an hour from his home. 'It's basically like having the events in our back garden, near enough,' he said. 'What's great about the event is there is something for everyone so even my neighbours will be coming to watch because they're coming to have a lovely time and also I'll be here as well. 'It's lovely to have local support and knowing that lots of my mates will be here. It's wonderful in that respect.' Grieve's family have long been involved in the world-renowned eventing competition throughout the years he has competed, having first ridden in 2012. Their attendance will once more be expected to cheer him on around the course as he recalls fond memories of past competitions with his mum. 'My mum has been a fence judge for lots of years and she's been fence judging every time I've competed and I've always shouted, 'Hi Mum!' as I've jumped her jump which is quite sweet,' enthused Grieve. 'Last time I was here and I was approaching her jump she said to someone, 'Oh, he'll say 'Hi mum,'' and I was like, 'Hi Mum!' and she was like, 'See!' 'So Mum will definitely be here and Dad hopefully as well. My sister is actually fence judging this time which is cool.' Having completed the course an impressive six times before, Grieve is hoping to improve his performance once more, but mainly the privilege of attending means he is also focused on enjoying the whole experience. 'To just compete is a massive feather in the cap but to actually win doesn't even bear thinking about. I couldn't imagine if I won, I would be doing cartwheels everywhere,' he said. 'My expectations this time round. I just want to improve on the last time that I was here and try and up my placing a little bit. 'Maybe I would like to up my pace on the cross country a little bit because I am quite slow in that respect. This horse actually moves quite nicely so should contest. 'But mostly I want to have a lovely time, I want my horse to have a really lovely time and come back safe having enjoyed the experience. 'It's all about that really, I want my horse to have enjoyed it more than anything.' Grieve will experience the reverse of the cross country course for the first time since 2017 which will bring a new challenge to riders in 2025. And though such a change will bring a fresh excitement, the historic event which has been at the pinnacle of eventing for decades will remain as special as ever for riders and spectators alike. 'Burghley has got such an amazing atmosphere in every sense,' added Grieve. 'It's a really tough competition so it's really exciting to watch, but equally there's a huge village of trade stands and shops and experiences and things for everybody. 'It's not just for horsey folks, it's also for anybody else. It's something that all the family can enjoy so it's really worth coming to. 'It's a great experience for everybody and I really do hope many people come to enjoy the day.' Defender Burghley Horse Trials (4-7 September 2025) has been a major international sporting and social event for over 50 years. It attracts the world's top equestrians and is attended by vast and enthusiastic crowds. For more information visit
