Grade 12 learner allegedly stabs Grade 11 to death outside Pretoria school gate
A Grade 11 learner died after being fatally stabbed outside Lesedi Secondary School in Lethabong, an informal settlement in Donkerhoek, Tshwane, yesterday.
According to the education department, the perpetrator was allegedly a Grade 12 learner from the same school.
Pretoria Rekord reports that the MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, says police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic stabbing.
Chiloane says preliminary reports suggest that the Grade 12 learner did not attend school that day but allegedly arrived when school came out.
He adds that just as learners were boarding their scholar transport, the Grade 12 learner allegedly stabbed the Grade 11 learner just outside the school yard.
'The victim was rushed to Lethabong Healthcare Clinic, where he was sadly certified dead on arrival,' Chilaone explains.
He says he is deeply saddened by this tragic incident.
'In response, the Gauteng Department of Education has dispatched a team of psychologists and our School Safety Unit to the school to provide trauma counselling to affected learners and educators, while strengthening safety interventions at the school.'
He says the department is heartbroken by this senseless act of violence.
'No child should ever lose their life in the pursuit of education. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and the school community during this incredibly painful time.'
He says the department condemns all forms of violence in and around schools, particularly by learners.
'Our schools must remain spaces of learning, safety and hope, not breeding grounds for brutality and violence. Learners must understand that violence has life-altering consequences. Such actions will not only remove you from the classroom, but may ultimately place you behind bars,' says Chiloane.

Asked why he told Ncaku to cancel the ride, he explained that he did not force her, he was just asking because he was trying to avoid their e-hailing platform from taking a portion of the trip fare. 'I am not the only person who cancels the trips. Drivers know that prices on our e-hailing platform are more beneficial to the customers than drivers. For instance, it would charge a customer R80 for a long drive and still deduct a certain amount from that R80, it affects us,' he exclaimed. Two life sentences for man who raped and stabbed schoolgirls
A 33-year-old man received two life sentences plus 45 years for brutally raping, kidnapping, and attempting to murder two schoolgirls in Dithakong village near Mothibistad, Northern Cape. The Mothibistad Regional Court found Thabo Magwatane guilty on seven charges. The charges include housebreaking with intent to steal, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of rape, and two counts of attempted murder. According to the NPA, Magwatane and three accomplices broke into a home on 23 February 2022. Two matric learners, aged 17 and 18, lived there to attend school. The attackers cut the power and demanded cash and phones before stealing R100 and two cellphones. They then stripped the victims naked, blindfolded them, and forced them into the veld wearing only sandals. One man raped both girls en route to a river. At the river, a second man raped them again. After the rapes, one of the attackers instructed another to kill the girls. The girls were stabbed repeatedly in the upper body and left for dead. When one girl tried to move, the group returned. She was stabbed again as one man told another to 'finish her off.' During the second stabbing, a cellphone alarm rang. One victim, pretending to be dead, saw Magwatane, her cousin's boyfriend, trying to silence the phone. The attackers fled the scene. The girls lay bleeding in the veld for 30 minutes before helping each other to seek help. One house refused to help them. At another, residents gave them blankets and called their parents. Both victims went to the ICU, underwent reconstructive surgery, and faced a long physical and emotional recovery. Magwatane evaded arrest for almost two years. Police arrested him in Rustenburg in early 2024. The court rejected any arguments for leniency. Magwatane will serve his sentences concurrently with the life terms. A second accused, Obakeng Mosesane, 25, remains in custody. The court set his trial for 2 July 2025. The judge separated the matters because Magwatane had absconded earlier. Gift of the Givers staff threatened by Eastern Cape 'water mafia'
The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu has condemned the threats and intimidation directed at humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers while delivering lifesaving assistance to flood-affected communities in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. Inclement weather conditions that had been forecast wreaked havoc in parts of the Eastern Cape last week. As a result, hundreds of people were displaced as they had to be evacuated from their flooded homes, while water and electricity infrastructure were also damaged. At least 90 people have been confirmed dead. According to the police, it is alleged that members of a so-called 'water mafia' reportedly linked to service providers contracted by the OR Tambo District Municipality, threatened Gift of the Givers staff as they distributed clean drinking water to residents impacted by the recent floods. In condemning the incident, Mchunu said police will not tolerate any attempt to intimidate or obstruct those who are working tirelessly to save lives and bring relief to people. Mchunu said the Gift of the Givers has consistently been a source of hope and dignity to South Africans in their hour of need. 'Any attack on them is an attack on the very principle of ubuntu. No individual or group will be allowed to profiteer off disaster or compromise the safety and well-being of our people. Law enforcement will act decisively. 'The SAPS will ensure the safety of all humanitarian workers in the area, and hold those responsible fully accountable under the law. We have also been made aware of individuals who go to the homes of those who lost their lives due to these floods, with a view to committing acts of theft from these homes. Police have been deployed to ensure the safety of the property of the deceased.' In response, the OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape said it is appalled and deeply disturbed by the threats directed towards officials of the Gift of the Givers Foundation. 'We wish to state without fear that extortion is a crime and it is a moral betrayal of the highest order, especially when directed at those extending a hand to the helpless.
