Gift of the Givers staff threatened by Eastern Cape 'water mafia'

The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu has condemned the threats and intimidation directed at humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers while delivering lifesaving assistance to flood-affected communities in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
Inclement weather conditions that had been forecast wreaked havoc in parts of the Eastern Cape last week. As a result, hundreds of people were displaced as they had to be evacuated from their flooded homes, while water and electricity infrastructure were also damaged. At least 90 people have been confirmed dead.
According to the police, it is alleged that members of a so-called 'water mafia' reportedly linked to service providers contracted by the OR Tambo District Municipality, threatened Gift of the Givers staff as they distributed clean drinking water to residents impacted by the recent floods.
In condemning the incident, Mchunu said police will not tolerate any attempt to intimidate or obstruct those who are working tirelessly to save lives and bring relief to people.
Mchunu said the Gift of the Givers has consistently been a source of hope and dignity to South Africans in their hour of need.
'Any attack on them is an attack on the very principle of ubuntu. No individual or group will be allowed to profiteer off disaster or compromise the safety and well-being of our people. Law enforcement will act decisively.
'The SAPS will ensure the safety of all humanitarian workers in the area, and hold those responsible fully accountable under the law. We have also been made aware of individuals who go to the homes of those who lost their lives due to these floods, with a view to committing acts of theft from these homes. Police have been deployed to ensure the safety of the property of the deceased.'
In response, the OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape said it is appalled and deeply disturbed by the threats directed towards officials of the Gift of the Givers Foundation.
'We wish to state without fear that extortion is a crime and it is a moral betrayal of the highest order, especially when directed at those extending a hand to the helpless. To prey on a crisis is to turn pain into profit. It is merciless, and it will not be tolerated,' the municipality said.

AKA & Tibz murder trial dates revealed amid courtroom drama

Trial dates have been issued in the murder case of Kiernan Jarryd Forbes (AKA) and Tebello Motsoane (Tibz). The five men arrested in connection with the murders appeared in the Durban High Court on Wednesday, 13 August. Award-winning musician AKA and his friend, celebrity chef Tibz, were shot and killed outside a restaurant on Durban's Florida Road in 2023. KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the matter was postponed to allow the parties to address outstanding pre-trial issues. A trial judge must still be appointed. 'The trial dates are 20 July to 21 August 2026, and 5 October to 6 November 2026,' said Ramkisson-Kara. Proceedings saw some drama earlier in the day when Judge Jacqueline Henriques reprimanded both the state and defence for the slow pace of the pre-trial process. As a result, the case was not certified as trial-ready. Henriques also called out the state for failing to share documents with the defence, including witness statements. Defence counsel Advocate Simphiwe Mlotshwa also indicated he was considering an application to compel the state to disclose witness statements. According to TimesLIVE , the state is expected to call 45 witnesses. The case was postponed to 19 June 2026. The accused – Lindokuhle Thabani Mkhwanazi, Lindani Zenzele Ndimande, Siyanda Eddie Myeza, Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, and Lindokuhle Lindo Ndimande – are aged between 21 and 36. Two other accused remain in custody in Eswatini. They face multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of murder, attempted murder, and firearm- and ammunition-related offences. MK Party takes battle against Cachalia to the High Court

JOHANNESBURG - After being shown the door by the Constitutional Court last month, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is taking its battle against the newly-appointed police Minister Firoz Cachalia to the High Court. It has filed an urgent case in the North Gauteng Division seeking to have Cachalia's appointment declared unconstitutional and invalid. The party is also challenging President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to establish a commission of inquiry into alleged corruption, collusion and political interference within the police service. ALSO READ: Cachalia says he's not been given a timeline for his stint as acting police minister Similar to the case it lodged when it was denied direct access to the Constitutional Court, the MK Party is now asking the High Court to review the decisions taken by Ramaphosa when he decided to put Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave. It followed claims by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that Mchunu was allegedly colluding with a criminal network that has infiltrated the South African Police Service (SAPS). On 1 August 2025, Cachalia was sworn into office to act in Mchunu's place, a move the MK Party also believes is unconstitutional. The party is now asking the High Court to consider these decisions, to find them illegal, invalid and inconsistent with the Constitution, and to set them aside. It's asked the court to enrol the matter for its first hearing on 26 August 2025.

Police urged to act as 2 million illegal firearms are circulating in South Africa

Two million illegal guns are on South Africa's streets. RISE Mzansi warns no one is safe and slams SAPS for failing to track and remove deadly firearms like the AK-47. Millions of illegal firearms are circulating in South Africa. This is in addition to the approximately 2.7 million legal firearms owned by private citizens, according to studies by Gun Free South Africa (GFSA). The high number of illegal firearms contributes to South Africa's high rate of gun violence, where firearms are the weapon of choice in many crimes, including murder. In the first six months of the most recent reported period, over 12 700 people were killed, averaging 70 murders per day. The illegal firearms trade is a serious concern, with some estimates suggesting there is one illegal firearm for every legal firearm. Civil society groups are calling for amendments to the Firearms Control Act to address the issue. Now Rise Mzansi has warned that an estimated two million illegal firearms circulating in South Africa are posing a serious threat to public safety. The party has criticised the South African Police Service (SAPS) for failing to track the specific makes of firearms used in crimes properly, a shortfall it says undermines crime analysis and detection efforts. In a written parliamentary reply to Rise Mzansi, the Minister of Police revealed that SAPS's Enhanced Firearms Register System (EFRS) does not capture the specific makes of firearms, only their types, such as handguns, shotguns, or rifles. This means the system is unable to identify weapons like the AK-47, Norinco, or AKM, all of which have reportedly been used in violent crimes across South Africa. Rise Mzansi Member of Parliament and National Assembly Caucus Whip Makashule Gana said the lack of detailed firearm data hampers the country's ability to track and remove illegal weapons from communities. 'Currently, the data provided in the EFRS can only differentiate in terms of firearm types (handgun, shotgun or rifle), not makes (AK47, Norinco, AKM),' the Minister of Police stated in response to the party's questions.
