Fisheries college holds training on use of smart sensor technology for marketing packed fish

A training programme on the marketing of packed fishes using smart sensor technology was conducted on Saturday at Muttam, organised by the College of Fisheries Engineering, Nagapattinam.
The initiative is part of a project funded by the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan programme of Government of India.
D. Kesavan, Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator of the project, demonstrated the preparation and use of an eye sensor capable of detecting spoilage in packed fish without opening the package.
The training highlighted seafood as a vital source of protein, valued for its high digestibility and nutritional benefits. However, factors such as odour and the time required for preparation often discourage consumption, especially among working individuals. Hygienically packed, ready-to-cook fish products, enhanced by spoilage-detection sensors, could help increase consumption and reduce food waste.
The sensor developed through this initiative enables consumers to visually assess freshness, improving confidence in packed seafood and enhancing its market potential. The project aims to foster entrepreneurship in coastal villages by equipping local communities with accessible, post-harvest technologies.
M. Ramar, Assistant Professor and Co-Principal Investigator, participated in the training programme.
Over 60 participants, including college students, local youth, panchayat officials, and community members, took part in the training.

Global First: Indian Scientists Map Cervical Cancer At Molecular Level, Open Doors To Precision Treatment

In a landmark achievement that places India firmly on the global oncology map, a team of Indian scientists and clinicians has conducted the country's first-ever integrative genomic and phosphoproteomic analysis of cervical cancer. This pioneering research, based on patient samples from Bihar, a state heavily impacted by the disease, unravels why some patients fail to respond to standard treatments and suggests more effective, personalised alternatives. Led by PhD scholars Janani Sambath and Irene A. George under the mentorship of Dr. Prashant Kumar, this study represents the world's first whole-genome and global proteomics-phosphoproteomics mapping of cervical cancer. On the clinical front, Dr. Richa Chauhan, senior oncologist at Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, Patna, monitored the application of these findings in real-world scenarios. "This research is close to my heart," says Dr. Chauhan. "As a cancer physician, I see women every day, many from rural or underserved backgrounds, with late-stage cervical cancer. Being part of a study that not only decodes resistance but also proposes actionable solutions is deeply gratifying." Revealing The Genetic Drivers Of Resistance Using advanced DNA sequencing, the researchers identified two major genetic alterations common in treatment-resistant cervical tumours: An increase in the number of copies of the EGFR gene, which accelerates cancer cell growth and spread. The loss of the STK11 gene, which normally functions as a growth brake. These findings are clinically significant as EGFR can be targeted using existing cancer drugs, potentially offering life-saving treatment options for patients unresponsive to standard therapy. Proteins That Hold The Key The proteomics arm of the study revealed that the CSNK2A1 protein acts as a "master switch" in treatment-resistant tumours, enabling survival pathways. Blocking this protein with the drug silmitasertib, in combination with low-dose cisplatin, significantly reduced cancer growth in lab experiments. In parallel, the phosphoproteomics analysis uncovered another protein-STX3-consistently present at high levels in resistant tumours. Identified as a powerful biomarker, STX3's discovery has been patented by the Government of India (Patent No. 404113) and has garnered widespread national attention. Recognition On The Global Stage Dr. Prashant Kumar presented the study at the ESMO Asia Congress 2024 in Singapore, where it earned the prestigious Best Poster Award, competing against top cancer research teams worldwide. This recognition not only validates the scientific excellence of the work but also strengthens India's position in the fight against women's cancers. "This is not just a scientific achievement, it's a social imperative," says Dr. Kumar. "We're proud that our research, powered by Indian samples and minds, is creating real translational possibilities." Why It Matters For India: Cervical Cancer Impact On Indian Women Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Indian women, responsible for nearly 10% of all female cancer cases. Despite HPV vaccination efforts, rural states like Bihar continue to face late-stage diagnoses, underscoring the urgent need for early detection tools and improved treatment protocols. Cervical cancer begins in the cervix-the lower part of the uterus-and is typically driven by long-term infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types, especially HPV-16 and 18. Often slow to show symptoms, it may initially involve irregular or abnormal vaginal bleeding, making regular screening (via Pap smears or HPV tests) vital for early detection and successful treatment. Globally, it ranks as the fourth most common cancer in women, with over 600,000 new cases and nearly 342,000 deaths reported in 2020. In India, the burden is even higher: age-standardised incidence is about 14.7 per 100,000 women, with a mortality rate of 9.2 per 100,000, as another study published in BMC Cancer in 2022 suggests. Roughly 96,900 new cases are diagnosed annually, with 60,000-67,000 deaths, accounting for about one-fifth of global cervical cancer burden. The five-year survival rate in India hovers around 47%, significantly lower than figures in more developed countries. Vulnerable groups, such as women from lower socioeconomic strata, rural areas, and with limited education, are disproportionately affected. Incidence rates peak among women aged 50-59, especially in regions like Northeast India, with cities like Aizawl reporting rates as high as 24 per 100,000. Alarmingly, screening rates remain abysmally low. Data from NFHS-5 shows only about 1-2% of women have ever undergone cervical cancer screening. This wide gap in awareness and access underscores a pressing public health priority. Keeping these in mind, the team behind the new breakthrough study aims to move silmitasertib-based combination regimens into clinical trials, alongside the development of targeted clinical tests to guide treatment planning. With its blend of cutting-edge molecular science and deep compassion for patients, this research offers renewed hope to thousands of women who need it most.

18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics inaugurated in Mumbai

India is ensuring that technology is the priority for Viksit Bharat, Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, said at the opening ceremony of the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) held on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) in Mumbai. 'The participants should return to their country with new ideas, inspiration, and enriched thought processes,' Prof.. Sood said, referring to the Olympiad as a 'science sport'. Over 300 high school students from 64 countries have participated in the 10-day Olympiad hosted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Astronomy is not only a study of the cosmos, Prof. Sood said in his inaugural speech, it is an ecosystem where extremely sensitive instruments involving computation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and more are used, offering many avenues to pursue in future. This is the second time that India is hosting the IOAA, after the 2016 edition in Bhubaneswar. This year's theme is 'Vasudaiva Kutumbakam', the 'ancient Indian idea of world is family under the one sky'. The future lies in the hands of young minds, solving real time problems, and India believes in international collaboration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a video message to the participants. 'The next scientific breakthrough could be at the hands of these young minds, who knows?' Mr. Modi said, highlighting India's achievements in the field of science. Participants from Classes 10 to 12 are selected after a rigorous process to compete at the international level of the Olympiad. During the 10-day event, students have to appear in several challenging exams. The dignitaries present at the opening ceremony included Ajit Kembhavi, former vice president of the International Astronomical Union. 'There is a possibility that your entire professional journey could be shaped here as you will get inspired to do great things in life,' Mr. Kembhavi said, stressing on inspiration. The IOAA was conceived in 2006 to meet the growing global interest in astronomy among high school students, with the first edition held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2007. According to the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, the IOAA's curriculum is designed to challenge students in theoretical, observational, and data analyses. 'The questions should be fun and challenging. In a way, a best student should have something to think in every question. Secondly, students who are less prepared should get inspired to study better, and thirdly, the questions should make students go back and check why they couldn't answer,' Jayram Chengalur, Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research said.

TEXMiN, housed within IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, serves as the translational backbone of this initiative, enabling technology readiness and real-world implementation of research outcomes. The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, announces its recognition as one of the seven Centres of Excellence (CoEs) under the prestigious National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), launched by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. This recognition marks a significant milestone in India's journey toward strengthening its scientific, technological, and industrial capabilities in the critical minerals sector. The recognition has been made possible through IIT(ISM) Dhanbad's close partnership with its Technology Translation Research Park, TEXMiN (Technology Innovation in Exploration & Mining Foundation, supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India), and a consortium of leading academic institutions, industry players, and innovation partners, both from India and abroad. Together, they have collaboratively built a strong proposal and vision aligned with NCMM's objective of achieving self-reliance across the critical minerals value chain. Operating in a Hub-and-Spoke model, the Centre of Excellence at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad brings together a dynamic mix of international and national partners. Global academic collaborators include Curtin University (Australia), University of Cambridge (UK), and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), while Indian academic partners include IIT (BHU) Varanasi and IIT Gandhinagar. Innovation and startup partners such as Novasensa, a clean energy and circular economy startup, and the Centre for Process Innovation Limited (CPI), UK, have also joined forces to contribute to cutting-edge, deployable technologies. Industry partners like Hindustan Copper Limited, MOIL Ltd, MMPL, and a few other alliance partners bring critical field expertise, infrastructure, and co-investment, enabling real-world validation and accelerated translation of CRM technologies from lab to housed within IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, serves as the translational backbone of this initiative, enabling technology readiness and real-world implementation of research outcomes. The CoE's projects are directly aligned with NCMM's vision, focusing on AI/ML-based mineral exploration, core sample digitization, real-time traceability of CRM (Critical and Strategic Minerals), and beneficiation and recycling solutions. This research will be instrumental in building secure and resilient mineral supply chains critical to clean energy, e-mobility, electronics, and strategic sectors such as defence and Mishra, Director of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and Chairman of the Governing Board, TEXMiN, said in a statement, 'We are proud to be recognized as a Centre of Excellence under NCMM.
