Emma Raducanu gets treatment for back injury in worrying scenes as she crashes out of Queen's 17 days before Wimbledon

EMMA RADUCANU took a medical timeout and struggled with a niggling back injury as she crashed out of the Queen's tournament.
Seventeen days before Wimbledon opens its doors for the 2025 Championships, the biggest name in British tennis is once again having to manage her body amid physical problems.

After losing the first set of her quarter-final tie with Qinwen Zheng, on the hottest day of the year thus far, the Kent hitter went to the changing rooms to undergo treatment.
It all relates to back spasms she suffered before the French Open and prior to arriving in Paris, the 22-year-old had to overcome her fear of needles to undergo acupuncture to help cure the pain.
It was on these grounds nearly 12 months ago that Andy Murray injured his back and ended up never playing another singles match.
It is not as severe as that but still, those in Raducanu's camp will be praying this incident does not disrupt her plans as she hopes to play in Berlin next week and then Eastbourne before a fourth appearance in the Wimbledon main draw.
Zheng, the world No.5, won 6-2 6-4 in a drawn-out affair and will now face an American in the semi-finals – it will either be Emma Navarro or Amanda Anisimova on Saturday.
Before walking out into the Andy Murray Arena, Raducanu made a point of taking AirPods out of her ears and putting them away, presumably because she wanted to hear the roar of the public for her entrance.
How Zheng would cope mentally with a packed crowd cheering against her would play a significant role in the outcome of this contest.
The Olympic singles champion, 22, was not exactly in the fans' good books when she decided in game six, while on break point on Raducanu's serve, to change her shoes.

The Asian star slipped on the grass and told the umpire that she needed to swap her footwear.
Pimm's-fuelled punters were not having any of it and slow-clapped while she sat on her chair and booed when she returned to the baseline, even though Zheng apologised several times for the interruption.
Raducanu was unconvincing on her own serve and looked tense and nervous in the opening games and was even questioning some of the calls made by the new electric line calling system.
There were two chances, at 4-2 down in the first set, where she might have broken back immediately but Zheng, a huge star in her homeland, fought off those moments.
Zheng – who had only won FOUR matches on grass before facing the 2021 US Open champion – sealed the first set with 49 minutes on the clock.
It was in bizarre circumstances as she was on the floor, having slipped over again, but Raducanu failed to find the open court, hitting the ball into the net.
A set down, Raducanu went backstage and took a medical timeout as she had treatment on a troublesome lower back region.
During the first set, she could be seen stretching her back during a changeover.
These were worrying scenes but unfortunately a situation that has become all too familiar with Raducanu since that historic Slam win in New York in September 2021.
Perhaps a surge of adrenaline explains how she came out looking like a different player in the second set, racing into a 3-0 and then 4-2 lead, the first break in game one courtesy of a Zheng double fault.
But with the temperature gauge recording 27.5 degrees, Raducanu felt the heat and soon it was 4-4 apiece as she gifted a break to her opponent due to her sixth of seven double faults in the match.
Though she managed to stave off three match points in game 10, Zheng progressed when Raducanu's forehand sailed long.

Ex-Liverpool and Man City star James Milner agrees new deal to play into his FORTIES - with Premier League record in his sights after recovering from potential career ending injury

James Milner has agreed a one-year contract extension with Brighton. Milner, who will turn 40 next January, is 15 appearances behind Gareth Barry's Premier League record of 653. Brighton announced the deal on Friday, which will see the midfielder stay at the Seagulls for a third season. The former Liverpool and Manchester City star wants to keep playing into his 40s after fighting back from a knee injury and complications that threatened to end his glittering career. Milner, who has made 61 appearances for England, the last one coming in 2016, feared his career was over after undergoing knee surgery in December. But he came on for the closing minutes of Brighton's victory at Tottenham on the final day of the Premier League season, to make his first appearance since August. Following the renewal, Milner said: 'Delighted to extend my time at the club and looking forward to getting back into pre season to work with the manager and this talented group of players.' The 39-year-old was fit and ready to return from the knee surgery in December only to be set back by nerve damage. 'I couldn't lift my foot or my toes, not an ideal scenario,' the Englishman, renowned for his deadpan delivery previously said. 'I didn't know whether I would be able to walk properly again let alone play football. 'There was a chance I might not have come back at all. Nobody said quit. But with my age it was highly unlikely I would get back. I think that was one of the things that drove me most. My first aim was to try and get the knee as strong as possible which I did.' Milner joined Brighton on a free from Liverpool in 2023. He made his Premier League debut for Leeds at the age of 16 before winning the Premier League with Liverpool and Manchester City. He also won the FA Cup and League Cup with both sides and the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019. His apperance against Spurs on the final day was his 881st in senior club football. Brighton finished in eighth place in the league last season under Fabian Hurzeler, just missing out on securing European football at the Amex

Joao Pedro's preferred new club amid Newcastle and Chelsea transfer interest as Brighton team-mate reveals future plans

JOAO PEDRO has decided where he wants to move amid transfer interest from Newcastle and Chelsea. The striker could be on the way out of Brighton this summer after impressing for the Seagulls over the last two years. 2 He is likely to demand a significant fee and his options could be limited because of where he wants to play. Pedro's Brighton team-mate Igor Julio has revealed the Brazilian is keen on a move to London in a dent to Newcastle's ambitions. He told Trivela: 'Joao Pedro had already told Brighton some time ago that his desire was to leave, look for new things and take the next step. 'It seems it will be difficult and complicated for him to stay here, we have to be honest, the club already knows that he said in contact with the report via video call. 'He always told me that he really wants to live in London, so I think he will prioritise what comes from there first.' Julio believes Pedro should move to a Big Six club competing in the Champions League, so Chelsea could be ideal. But if the Blues want him this summer they might have to fork out a huge fee. Brighton slapped a £70m price tag on the 23-year-old but SunSport understands that they will be willing to do business for £59m. 2 Newcastle could try and sign him once again with Eddie Howe still a big admirer. Toon came close to landing Pedro two years ago, who has scored 30 goals in 70 games on the south coast since arriving for £30m from Watford.

"He could not have spoken more highly of the club and the city, and the DNA of the club."That is a real big driver in me wanting to come here, it's really important to me."Following Luke Williams' exit in February, Swansea collected 24 points from 13 matches at a rate of 1.85 points per game under Sheehan last season, the joint-third highest points tally in the Championship over that O'Dea says he regularly watched Swansea last term as part of his role with Celtic."The guys here did a fantastic job over the final part of last season, I watched a number of games last season while I was at Celtic as it was part of my responsibilities to be monitoring and watching football across Europe," he added."I am well versed in what the team looks like, and the players, I am looking forward to getting to know them."
