Gayton's son reveals why he'll never take dad's surname
Gayton McKenzie's son, Calvin Le John – the new owner of Siwelele FC, previously SuperSport United – reveals he has no intention of taking his dad's surname. The firstborn of the Minister of Sport, Art, and Culture spoke to Robert Marawa in his first interview as a soccer boss. Speaking on 947, Calvin Le John was questioned on his decision not to take his father's surname. The Siwelele boss revealed that his mother chose to give him her maiden name in her bid to disassociate with Gayton McKenzie, who at the time had been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment at Grootvlie prison for armed robbery. He said, 'She didnt want her child to grow up with the surname of a prisoner. I never changed it. Growing up, I actually felt blessed that I had my mother's surname because I did not want to be directly under my father's shadow. Calvin – the firstborn of the Minister of Sport, Art and Culture – continued: 'I don't live by the title of the son of Gayton McKenzie. I always try to keep under the radar, I just wanted my peace.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Phezu Kwabo (@phezukwabo_) In the interview, Calvin Le John praised his dad Gayton McKenzie for being a role model for many South Africans, despite his criminal past. He said, 'My father is my teacher, my mentor. I love him, respect him, and admire him. He taught me everything I know. 'His story is a lesson for every person in South Africa. 'He's one of those people who show you that you can come from nothing and make it to where he is Since Calvin Le John acquired Siwelele FC, many South Africans have accused Gayton McKenzie of having a hand in the closed business deal. Others claim he would use his position as Minister of Sport to further the club's interests. Responding to the rumours, Gayton said in a Facebook Live: 'People act like we took money from under our mattress and we just went to go buy a club. 'He bought it, I'm not part of the company….There's no consortium, he owns 100% of the company alone'. Gayton added, 'I'm very proud of him. He doesn't want to trade on McKenzie's name; that shows you he is different.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Kaizer Chiefs questioned on Sundowns-bound star
A wonderfully talented Kaizer Chiefs product, Khulumani Ndamane, is edging closer to joining Mamelodi Sundowns from TS Galaxy. The situation has sparked intense debate among fans and analysts, calling into question whether Kaizer Chiefs' decision-making in recent transfer windows is letting valuable talent slip through their fingers. Ndamane, a 21-year-old left-footed center-back, left the Amakhosi reserve side to impress during his breakout season with Galaxy—and even earned a Bafana Bafana debut. Bafana midfielder: Orlando Pirates changed my life Kaizer Chiefs chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung and the club's Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. Image: Sowetan 'Sometimes the guys (at Chiefs) are not making the right decisions,' Khan said via Soccer Laduma . 'That bridge between the first team and reserves, you need to find somebody who knows how to ensure the transition is a smooth one,' Khan added. Bafana Bafana star: 'Why I joined Sundowns' 'This is (just) one good example but if I'm sitting at Chiefs, I would take it as a very good example never to make the same mistake. This guy is (reportedly) going to Mamelodi Sundowns, he's a quality player, I watched him at Galaxy and shook my head and said. ''For heaven's sake, that's the area Kaizer Chiefs are struggling, to get that defensive pairing organized, they should never have let this boy go', but hopefully they've learned the lesson and hopefully in future, they'll ensure they have a proper sit down when they release players like Ndamane,' Khan concluded. AB de Villiers delivers another masterclass as SA legends win world title
The SA captain scored his third century of the tournament and also ended as the competition's leading run-scorer. Former Proteas captain AB de Villiers scored a stunning 120 not out off 60 balls to lead the South African 'champions' team to victory in the World Championship of Legends final in Birmingham, England on Saturday. De Villiers and his team beat the Pakistan champions team of Mohammed Hafeez by nine wickets with 19 balls remaining to lift the trophy at the tournament for the first time. The SA team's captain's score of 120 was his third century in four matches at the tournament. He ended as the competition's leading run scorer with 429 runs. De Villiers' other big scores at the tournament were 63, 116, and 123. De Villiers was given something of a life halfway through his innings when he was 'caught' in the deep, but a TMO over-ruled the decision, deciding the ball had bounced before the batter was 'caught'. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Pakistan scored 195 runs in their 50 overs. Sharjeel Khan, who scored 76 off 44 balls, was Pakistan's best batter, while Hardus Viljoen and Wayne Parnell got two wickets each for South Africa. Besides De Villiers, JP Duminy (50 not out off 28) also scored well for the South Africans and ensured there were no late jitters.
