
'Divine blood' found on Shroud of Turin supports biblical story of Jesus' death and resurrection
Believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus following the crucifixion, scientists have long debated its authenticity.
While radiocarbon dating in the 1980s suggested a medieval origin, some scholars have argued that the blood on the linen tells a different story.
Dr Jeremiah Johnston, a biblical scholar, told the Tucker Carlson Network that testing from the 1990s identified blood type AB on the Shroud.
'The Shroud has type AB blood, identified as Semitic, present in only six percent of the population, confirmed as human and male, ruling out animal blood or a hoax,' Dr Johnston said.
He also noted that testing showed it was human, male blood that was both premortem and postmortem.
'You would have to actually kill someone if you were trying to reproduce the shroud because we have premortem and post-mortem blood all over the shroud,' said Dr Johnston.
The presence of both pre- and post-mortem blood on the Shroud is unusual, suggesting processes inconsistent with natural decomposition, interpreted by some as aligning with resurrection accounts.
The AB blood type was first documented in 1982 by Italian biographer Dr Pierluigi Baima Bollone and colleagues, who analyzed a sample from the Shroud's pierced side.
Subsequent testing also detected M, N, and S antigens in blood from the foot area, confirming the blood was unquestionably human.
The researchers tested the samples in two ways to figure out the blood type.
First, they checked for antibodies by putting the fibers on slides, keeping them cold at about 39°F for a long time, adding A1 or B red blood cells and letting them sit for 30 minutes.
They looked at the slides under a regular microscope and later used a powerful electron microscope after preserving the fibers in alcohol and coating them with gold.
Then the team tested for antigens, particles that stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies, using a mixed agglutination method.
They kept the slides cold for 24 hours with anti-A and anti-B serums, washed them several times with saltwater and a cow protein solution, added A1 or B red blood cells, and checked them under a regular microscope, followed by electron microscope checks.
The results showed the Shroud's bloodstained fibers had both A and B antigens but no antibodies, pointing to type AB blood. The clean Shroud fibers had no antigens, proving they were free of blood.
Dr Johnston also told Carlson that the Sudarium of Oviedo in Spain, which is the facecloth that John's Gospel talks about that covered his face, was also found to have type AB blood.
There is no image on this cloth. Only stains are visible to the naked eye, although more is visible under the microscope.
However, Dr Kelly Kearse, an immunologist who has extensively studied the Shroud of Turin, has expressed skepticism about the claim that the blood on the Shroud is type AB.
Dr Kearse argued that the methods lacked proper controls and could produce false positives due to contamination, such as bacteria, or degradation of the blood over centuries.
'Regarding tests to determine blood type, it could be AB, but I really don't think there's any solid scientific evidence to back that up,' he wrote in a 2020 study.
Dr Johnston estimated there are roughly 700 wounds visible on the Shroud.
'This was a very badly wounded man, pints of type AB blood, all over it,' he said, noting that the injuries align with what is known about Roman crucifixions.
Dr Johnston also highlighted the image itself, a faint, full-body imprint of a bearded man.
'The image on the Shroud is only two microns thick and does not penetrate through the cloth,' he explained.
'If this were a hoax, painted or dyed, the material would have soaked through completely.
'Instead, the image is so thin we could shave it off with a razor. Even the world's best scientists are baffled.'
He suggested the imprint could have formed through a sudden chemical reaction triggered by an immense burst of energy, possibly corresponding to the moment of the Resurrection.
Paolo Di Lazzaro, a physicist and laser specialist at ENEA Laboratories near Rome, spent five years studying the Shroud.
His team managed to recreate the chemical change in the linen fibers using a massive burst of 34 trillion watts of energy.
This 'cold' energy, lasting just a quarter of a billionth of a second, altered the linen's structure to form the image on the Shroud, Dr Johnston explained.
Measuring 14 feet long, the linen was first publicly displayed in the 1350s and presented as the actual burial cloth of Christ.
While 1988 radiocarbon dating placed its origin between 1260 and 1390 AD, Dr Johnston contends that only a contaminated corner patch, not the original linen, was tested.
'The actual linen has never been radiocarbon dated, just the upper-left corner patch, which was contaminated,' he said.
Dr Johnston described the Shroud as 'the most lied about and misunderstood artifact in the world' and thanked Carlson for the opportunity to share his findings.

AI antibiotics for superbugs could lead to ‘golden age of discovery'
Artificial intelligence has created two antibiotics that could herald a 'golden age' in the fight against superbugs. AI virtually invented more than 50 million compounds and investigated whether they could kill MRSA and gonorrhoea, two of the most common superbugs. More than 52,000 people a year in the UK catch antibiotic-resistant infections, which cause around 2,000 deaths annually. Antimicrobial resistance, which creates superbugs, has been called the 'silent pandemic' and the problem of antibiotic resistance is set to get worse. These deadly infections occur when a bacteria is treated with a drug but works out ways of neutralising the medicine. The genetic protections make drugs less effective and can make common infections lethal. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) used AI to come up with completely new ways of targeting these pathogens in the hope of making a breakthrough against superbugs. 'We're excited because we show that generative AI can be used to design completely new antibiotics,' Prof James Collins, the leader of the project at MIT, told the BBC. 'AI can enable us to come up with molecules, cheaply and quickly and in this way, expand our arsenal, and really give us a leg up in the battle of our wits against the genes of superbugs.' AI was used to make as many hypothetical chemical compounds as possible that could target and kill the two bacterial infections. The algorithms then filtered the results to show only those that worked in a novel way, had strong antimicrobial properties and were not toxic. This left one million possible new antibiotics in the virtual database. Dr Aartia Krishnan, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT, said this step was key because the team's goal was to find drugs that worked in a completely different way to anything else ever used by doctors. Scientists then tried to physically make around 170 of the most promising compounds. Only 24 of the chemicals could be created in a lab, with two for gonorrhoea and 22 against MRSA. Tests in cells and mice found one of the novel gonorrhoea antibiotics and one of the MRSA compounds were able to kill bacteria. 'Both compounds exhibited mechanisms of action distinct from those of often-used antibiotics and were effective in reducing bacterial titers in different animal models of infection,' the study authors wrote in their paper, published in Cell. 'Additionally, both compounds exhibited a structure-activity landscape that can be productively used for further optimisation. 'Together, our results enable the generative design of two unique structural classes of antibacterial compounds and demonstrate the ability of our platform to explore uncharted regions of chemical space.' A company affiliated with the MIT research project is now investigating if the two antibiotics, dubbed NG1 and DNA1, can be adapted for preclinical trials. 'We are exploring analogues, as well as working on advancing the best candidates preclinically, through medicinal chemistry work,' said Prof Collins. 'We are also excited about applying the platforms that Aarti and the team have developed toward other bacterial pathogens of interest, notably Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.'

Why boys did better than girls at A-levels
Girls outperforming boys at school is something we had almost begun to take for granted. Yet while it still holds true throughout primary and secondary education, 2025 is the year the tables turned when it comes to A-levels. This year, 28.4 per cent of male candidates received an A* or A score, compared to 28.2 per cent for their female counterparts. This is the first time boys have taken the lead since 2018, and only for the third time in modern grading history. What or who could explain this unexpected reversal of academic fortunes? Experts were quick to suggest the success was down to boys' subject choices: they tend to favour STEM fields where the right-or-wrong answers allow exam-takers to get closer to full marks than in the humanities or arts. While their soaring popularity is undoubtedly real – with male entrants for further maths up 7.6 per cent on last year and economics up 5.7 per cent – the subjects driving the overall gain are far broader. Boys improved year-on-year in the share of top grades in 25 out of the 41 subjects on offer, according to the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ). Girls did so in only 16. Amongst courses available in all UK nations, boys' performance increased the most in art and design (up 2.8 points), modern languages (up 2.8 points) and drama (up 2.3 points). But the impact of the most subscribed subjects, even if small, cannot be ignored. Maths was the most popular once again for both genders, accounting for 12.7 per cent of papers handed in this summer. While boys' equation-solving skills held firm – their A*/A share rising 0.1 points – the girls lost a full percentage point. Factoring in the number of candidates sitting each exam to obtain their weighted contribution to the overall change reveals chemistry had the biggest influence. Boys' share of top grades in chemistry, their fourth most popular subject, rose 1.2 points from 34.3 to 35.5 per cent. The roughly 28,000 boys producing that result alone dragged their sex's all-round result up by 8.3 per cent. Their newfound prowess in art and design came second (a 7.3 per cent boost), followed by business studies (6.7 per cent). Another hint comes from the headline result split by age. Adding an extra decimal shows the headline difference between the genders across all UK candidates came to 0.26 points (so actually 0.3 when rounding). But looking at the grade distribution for 18-year-old candidates alone, this space shrinks to 0.12 points. Exam-sitters of this age made up the vast majority of candidates – 807,420 out of the total 882,509, or around 91.5 per cent. This suggests that among the 75,000-odd entries in other age groups, such as pupils taking their A-levels early aged 16 or 17 or people who resat them after the age of 18, the male contingent excelled. National figures, meanwhile, suggest English boys deserve particular acclaim. They improved the most of either gender in all three nations, up 1 point from 27.4 to 28.4 per cent. As England makes up the lion's share of all UK candidates – over 9 in 10 of the roughly 400,000 boys that sat exams this year – they had a profound effect. For their part, English girls fought back with a gain of just 0.2 points. Boys also made headway across the Irish Sea (up 0.7 points), where girls saw a modest decline (down 0.3 points). However, as stressed by the official examination board, the swing in favour of boys is quite marginal. The JCQ said fluctuations from one year to the next were inevitable, and that this slim disparity was well within their expected margins. Further down the grading curve, boys are not outperforming girls at all. The latter actually fared better in avoiding the lowest possible grades: 79.6 per cent of them got a C or above, compared to 76 per cent of boys. A total of 12,151 male candidates received a U (ungraded), compared with 10,252 for their female counterparts. Regional disparities Pupils in England were again outshone by their counterparts elsewhere, with 28.2 per cent of entries awarded an A* or A this summer – rising to 29.5 per cent in Wales and 30.4 per cent in Northern Ireland. But this masks stark differences between the English regions, where the proportion of top grades increased everywhere except the North East and the West Midlands, where they declined one percentage point and 0.6 percentage points respectively. Pupils in the East Midlands saw the highest jump in A*s and As to 23.8 per cent – up from 22.5 last year. But London remained by far the strongest region, with 32.1 per cent of A-level entries scooping the top two grades. Rutland tops the counties At an even more granular level, Rutland's reign atop the county charts continued for a seventh year in a row, according to separate data published by Ofqual since 2019. Some 41.2 per cent of candidates in the rural East Midlands shire clinched top marks in 2025, the only area where more than two-fifths of pupils were able to boast as much. Greater Manchester, however, proved the setting for the greatest uplift in grades, rising two points since 2024 from 26.1 to 28.1 per cent A*/As. Overall, just over two-thirds of English counties (68.1 per cent) saw a rise or flatline in top grades. Grammar schools catch up to independents The attainment gap between private schools and the state sector narrowed slightly this year after selective schools posted their best ever results outside of the pandemic. Grammar schools and other selective institutions saw 43.7 per of their A-level entries receive A*s and As – up one percentage point compared to 2024. Meanwhile, the share of top grades in the independent sector slipped by 0.1 percentage points to remain broadly stable at 48.5 per cent. The results come at a crucial moment for private schools as they try to prove their worth, after the Government's VAT policy forced most to raise fees by around a fifth from Jan 1. The narrowed gap between grammar schools and private schools this year will likely toughen competition in the state sector, as fee-paying parents consider their options. Struggles in STEM subjects Maths, psychology and biology remained the most popular A-level subjects this year, alone accounting for just under 30 per cent of all exams sat. Of the three, however, only maths saw an increase in entries. Excluding digital technology, only on offer in Northern Ireland, art and design subjects clocked the highest increase in top grades, rising 3.5 per cent this year, tailed by modern languages other than French, Spanish or German, media studies and English language. The increase follows some concerns that students may be using AI tools such as ChatGPT for coursework-heavy subjects. By contrast, several core STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics) experienced slight falls, with maths down 0.3 percentage points this year, chemistry down 0.1 points, and further maths down 0.2 points.
