A second Windows 11 bug takes suspicious aim at Google Chrome — and the same Microsoft app is to blame

Last Friday, we reported on an issue in Windows 11 where Google Chrome would simply refuse to launch. Chrome's support manager, Ellen T., confirmed that the team had investigated the problem and pinned it on Microsoft's Family Safety feature, but users were provided with a quick workaround instead of an official fix.
The workaround? Either disable the 'Filter inappropriate websites' option under Family Safety or, oddly enough, rename the Chrome.exe file to Chrome1.exe.
Microsoft still hasn't rolled out an official fix, but it has finally acknowledged the issue while confirming another bug impacting Chrome users, too.
As reported by Neowin, Microsoft confirmed one more issue affecting Google Chrome users on Windows via a new Microsoft Learn entry. The entry was opened on Tuesday, June 24, and it hasn't been updated since.
The new bug Microsoft has identified also has to do with the Family Safety feature that caused the issue we reported on earlier. However, instead of the feature causing Chrome to crash entirely, the feature just… doesn't work.
The Redmond-based giant explains that the Web Content Filtering system relies on a block list to prevent browsers from accessing inappropriate search results and websites.
Unless a browser version is added to the block list, it won't be, well, blocked — even if content filtering is turned on for the account. Something that, in the Microsoft Learn entry, the tech giant admitted to not having done with the latest version of Chrome and several other browsers.
Due to this mistake on Microsoft's end, the browsers not added to the list might temporarily appear unblocked. Thankfully, Microsoft confirmed that it's currently working on updating the block list.
The Redmond-based giant also touched on the issue we've already talked about in our previous article, which is causing Google Chrome and 'some browsers' to shut down unexpectedly. PCs with Parental Controls enabled typically receive a parental approval message: 'You'll need to ask to use this app.'
Once a parent approves, the child gains access to the browser. However, this bug is causing the browser to shut down immediately without the prompt even appearing. Microsoft has pinpointed that this issue is only observed when the Activity reporting feature is disabled.
The suggested workaround is to enable Activity reporting under Windows settings in Family Safety. Once the feature is enabled, parents will begin to receive approval requests as usual.
The issues discussed above are affecting Windows 10 version 22H2 and Windows 11 versions 22H2, 23H2, and 24H2.
Microsoft's confirmed that it's actively working on resolving both the above issues, and will update the support document when it has more information. What's great is that the tech giant has finally acknowledged the issue and provided a workaround to the Google Chrome crashing problem.
Considering Microsoft has had quite the rocky history with Google Chrome, it's frankly a bit odd that both issues seem to primarily be affecting Chrome.
Microsoft has a history of targeting Chrome (the world's most popular web browser) directly in various ways, including publishing a guide on 'how to uninstall Google Chrome,' displaying pop-up ads promoting Edge in the Chrome app, and interrupting users who search for Google Chrome using its Edge browser, just to name a few.
Are both bugs genuine, or are they simply another attempt by Microsoft to push users toward Edge instead of Chrome? In this instance, I guess we'll never know.

Putting it in a bag in that state will make it hot, and the fans will choke. I have to watch out for this because if I don't, it will get damaged over time and die. This should be enough for the product to be recalled. There are more issues with it, but that is a topic for another day. I know that other manufacturers have the same problem. This is what you get from a modern-ish with an Apple MacBook would be puzzled to hear this. They don't have this problem, and how the heck do PC users tolerate it? It seems that PC manufacturers can get away with anything today, and Apple can't; it is held to a higher standard. With the release of the M1 chip in 2020, Apple left the PC competitors in the dust. It took them years to catch up. Even though I still wouldn't buy an Apple laptop for myself, this chip made me comfortable recommending them. But I digress. The reality is that innovation takes time. After all, Apple needed thirteen years to make something really "life-changing" following the launch of the iPhone. In fact, Apple generally takes its time, opting for others' so-called best-in-breed until it creates something better. Perhaps that's why it relies so much on Google for search, rather than a homegrown solution. Apple's deal with Google has worked out well for it (and is profitable), but, unfortunately, that relationship may end soon. The Justice Department's antitrust lawsuit against Google revealed that Apple () was paid $20 billion by Google in 2022 to keep it the default search engine in the Safari browser, reported Bloomberg. Google lost the lawsuit, and the DOJ wants the company to cease multibillion-dollar payments to Apple, among other things. Reuters reported that Google plans to appeal the decision. Apple does not reveal revenue from this deal with Google in its earnings reports; however, it is part of its services fiscal 2022, Apple's services revenue was about $78 billion. The calendar and fiscal year don't align, but making an estimate would mean Google's payment was about 25% of services revenue. Total revenue was $394 billion, so about 5% came from Google. This is especially true given that Apple has been under fire lately for its apparent failure to launch some amazing artificial intelligence products. I've already written about why the company is struggling on that front. Unconfirmed media reports suggest Apple wants to buy or partner with Perplexity AI to get its hands on its AI-powered search, which provides cited responses to search queries using third-party LLMs. According to Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan, if this deal happens, it will quickly give Apple AI abilities that can be integrated into Siri. It will also provide access to the search advertising market and a high-quality team of AI not all roses, though. He pointed out four drawbacks: Technology integration might prove to be difficult. The company might face legal and regulatory risks. The deal would have an impact on existing Google relations. Some of Perplexity's offerings are dependent on rival LLMs. Mohan has an Apple stock price target of $235 and rates the stock a buy, based on a favorable price-to-earnings ratio. He says Apple is trading at approximately 29 times his estimate for calendar year 2026 earnings per share of $8.07. The 5-year historical P/E range is 16 to 34. "We believe a multiple at the higher end of the historical range is justified given a multi-year upgrade cycle, large cash balance and opportunity to diversify into new end markets, increasing mix and diversity of services," said Mohan. Getting into the search advertising market and fixing Siri, with one acquisition, sounds like killing two birds with one stone, but I have my doubts. Knowing that Meta tried to buy Perplexity AI and instead bought Scale AI, I hope that Apple is playing 4D chess. Why Reliability Is The Hardest Problem In Physical AI

You exit the highway and tap the brakes, but nothing happens. The car won't slow down. You frantically search for a safe place to coast, heart pounding, hoping to avoid a crash. Even after the brakes are repaired, would you trust that car again? Trust, once broken, is hard to regain. When it comes to physical products like cars, appliances or robots, reliability is everything. It's how we come to count on them for our jobs, well-being or lives. As with vehicles, reliability is critical to the success of AI-driven robots, from the supply chain to factories to our homes. While the stakes may not always be life-or-death, dependability still shapes how we trust robots, from delivering packages before the holidays to cleaning the house just in time for a dinner party. Yet despite the massive potential of AI in the physical world, reliability remains a grand challenge for the field. Three key factors make this particularly hard and point to where solutions might emerge. 1. Not all failures are equal. Digital AI products like ChatGPT make frequent mistakes, yet hundreds of millions of active users use them. The key difference is that these mistakes are usually of low consequence. Coding assistants might suggest a software API that doesn't exist, but this error will likely be caught early in testing. Such errors are annoying but permissible. In contrast, if a robot AI makes a mistake, it can cause irreversible damage. The consequences range from breaking a beloved item at home to causing serious injuries. In principle, physical AI could learn to avoid critical failures with sufficient training data. In practice, however, these failures can be extremely rare and may need to occur many times before AI learns to avoid them. Today, we still don't know what it takes in terms of data, algorithms or computation to achieve high dependability with end-to-end robot foundation models. We have yet to see 99.9% reliability on a single task, let alone many. Nonetheless, we can estimate that the data scale needed for reliable physical AI is immense because AI scaling laws show a diminishing performance with increased training data. The scale is likely orders of magnitude higher than for digital AI, which is already trained on internet-scale data. The robot data gap is vast, and fundamentally new approaches may be needed to achieve industrial-grade reliability and avoid critical failures. 2. Failures can be hard to diagnose. Another big difference between digital and physical AI is the ability to see how a failure occurred. When a chatbot makes a mistake, the correct answer can be provided directly. For robots, however, it can be difficult to observe the root causes of issues in the first place. Limitations of hardware are one problem. A robot without body-wide tactile sensing may be unable to detect a slippery surface before dropping an item or unable to stop when backing into something behind it. The same can happen in the case of occlusions and missing data. If a robot can't sense the source of the error, it must compensate for these limitations—and all of this requires more data. Long-time delays present another challenge. Picture a robot that sorts a package to the wrong location, sending it to the wrong van for delivery. The driver realizes the mistake when they see one item left behind at the end of the day. Now, the entire package history may need to be searched to find the source of the mistake. This might be possible in a warehouse, but in the home, the cause of failure may not be identified until the mistake happens many times. To mitigate these issues, monitoring systems are hugely important. Sensors that can record the robot's actions, associate them with events and find anomalies can make it easier to determine the root cause of failure and make updates to the hardware, software or AI on the robot. Observability is critical. The better that machines get at seeing the root cause of failure, the more reliable they will become. 3. There's no fallback plan. For digital AI, the internet isn't just training data; it's also a knowledge base. When a chatbot realizes it doesn't know the answer to something, it can search through other data sources and summarize them. Entire products like Perplexity are based on this idea. For physical AI, there's not always a ground truth to reference when planning actions in real-world scenarios like folding laundry. If a robot can't find the sheet corners, it's not likely to have success by falling back to classical computer vision. This is why many practical AI robots use human intervention, either remote or in-person. For example, when a Waymo autonomous vehicle encounters an unfamiliar situation on the road, it can ask a human operator for additional information to understand its environment. However, it's not as clear how to intervene in every application. When possible, a powerful solution is to use a hybrid AI robot planning system. The AI can be tightly scoped to specific decisions such as where to grasp an item, and traditional methods can be used to plan a path to reach that point. As noted above, this is limited and won't work in cases where there is no traditional method to solve the problem. Intervention and fallback systems are key to ensuring reliability with commercial robots today and in the foreseeable future. Conclusion Despite rapid advances in digital GenAI, there's no obvious path to highly reliable physical AI. It isn't just a technical hurdle; it's the foundation for trust in intelligent machines. Solving it will require new approaches to data gathering, architectures for monitoring/interventions and systems thinking. As capabilities grow, however, so does momentum.
