This Dark and Atmospheric '90s Flick Is a Sci-Fi Classic, and It's Streaming Free on Tubi

CNET7 days ago
The '90s were the heyday of techno-noir movies, flicks that combine the cynical atmosphere and jaded perspectives of film noir with the dystopian settings and altered reality of science fiction. Though movies like The Matrix may have exploded the popularity of the genre, there were also films that didn't get the attention they deserved on release.
One of my overlooked favorites is Dark City, a mind-bending techno-noir thriller that explores the idea of identity against the backdrop of a city swathed in darkness. Released in 1998, the underrated gem preceded The Matrix by a year, and it's streaming for free on Tubi right now.

I've been a fan of techno-noir vibes since my first time watching Blade Runner, and the '90s delivered a spate of excellent options that let me feast my eyes on beautiful sets, amazing stories and worlds that felt real and gritty in the best of ways.
Dark City delivers a futuristic city swathed in shadows, with vibes from the 1950s like automats, or the costume design, and it's a style I can't get enough of.
A man wakes up in a bathtub with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Almost immediately, things go off the rails. There's a dead woman in the next room, a cryptic phone call telling our unknown protagonist to get out of there, and a mystery that begins to unfold in the dark streets of the city. John Murdoch figures out who he is slowly through a series of clues, like his name in a ledger at the motel and his briefcase.
As he tries to figure out what happened, he's beset on two sides. Police Inspector Frank Bumstead is trying to unravel a case of dead prostitutes that's leading him toward John. And then there are the mysterious "strangers."
The strangers
Jasin Boland/New Line Cinema
Tall, pale men who seemingly have the ability to change reality via "tuning." John is cornered by these strangers, but in a moment of desperation manages to alter reality and escape their clutches.
Soon after, the clock strikes midnight, and John watches as every person in the city falls asleep, and the strangers use their mysterious abilities to change the architecture of the city itself.
As John tries to recover his memories, he remembers he is from a small town outside the city called Shell Beach. However, any attempts to reach it end in failure. At this point, John is apprehended by the inspector, who believes him when he explains that something strange is going on in the city and uses his ability to tune to prove it.
The atmosphere, set design, and overall cinematography in Dark City make every frame worth noticing. The 100-minute length is infused with mystery, drama and more questions than answers. The strangers stalk John and the inspector, a local doctor who has information about the strangers and where they came from, and the city continues to change and trap everyone within its alleys.
I won't spoil the third act for you when you find out what the strangers are really after, and the methods they employ to find answers. When John begins to unravel the mystery he woke up inside of, things go from weird to truly out there. The murders, the amnesia and the city are all linked by the strangers, and once you find out what happened, there is no going back.
Dark City reached cult classic status with good reason. While it might not have been a box office hit, it's still an amazing watch 27 years later. It's one of those sci-fi movies that gets me every time, and the cast delivers a top-notch performance. Sream it for free on Tubi, and discover the mystery for yourself.

FCC OKs $8B Paramount—Skydance Deal, Says It Ensures ‘Diversity of Viewpoints' at CBS

The Federal Communications Commission has approved the $8 billion merger of Paramount Global (PARA) and Skydance Media, claiming 'significant changes,' are coming to the CBS owner. 'Americans no longer trust the legacy national news media to report fully, accurately, and fairly. It is time for a change,' FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said. "That is why I welcome Skydance's commitment to make significant changes at the once storied CBS broadcast network.' Carr said Skydance has committed to ensuring New Paramount programming "embodies a diversity of viewpoints from across the political and ideological spectrum.' That commitment includes working with an ombudsman whose job it is to evaluate complaints of media bias. Paramount's politics have been in focus after the company in May agreed to pay President Donald Trump $16 million to settle a lawsuit over a CBS interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump's lawsuit alleged that CBS News had 'deceitfully edited a '60 Minutes' interview with the Democratic presidential candidate to make her sound better,' according to reports. Paramount recently announced the cancellation of 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,' which has included jokes criticizing Trump as a fixture of its material. Paramount called the move 'a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.' Skydance Founder and Son of Oracle's Larry Ellison Will Lead New Paramount Paramount and Skydance agreed to merge in June after months of negotiations. As part of the deal, Skydance and its private equity backer will pay $2.4 billion to buy National Amusements, the holding company owned by Shari Redstone that controls about 77% of Paramount's voting share. The companies will pay $4.5 billion to Paramount shareholders and another $1.5 billion will go toward Paramount's balance sheet. David Ellison, founder of Skydance and son of Oracle (ORCL) co-founder Larry Ellison, will take over as CEO of New Paramount after the media conglomerate's previous chief executive, Bob Bakish, left earlier this year, with a three-person "office of the CEO" taking his place. Shares of Paramount rose slightly in early trading Friday. The stock is up more than 25% for 2025. Read the original article on Investopedia

Cardi B sued by fan for assault, battery after viral 2023 microphone-throwing incident

Two years after Cardi B was accused of assaulting a fan with a microphone during a live performance, the rapper is reportedly facing legal repercussions for the viral incident. The concertgoer, a woman from Cleveland, Ohio, filed a lawsuit alleging assault, battery and negligence against the Grammy-winning rapper on Monday, July 21, according to Rolling Stone and Billboard. The woman's attorney, Cierra N. Norris, confirmed the litigation in a July 24 press conference. "It is quite the feat to take on someone that is known and loved like Cardi B," Norris told news cameras. "Thank God we are not in a court of public opinion, but we are in a court of law." In an Instagram post, also confirming her client's complaint, Norris wrote: "No one should be afraid to hold someone accountable just because they are famous," adding that the woman is going by the pseudonym Jane Doe because she is "suffering from mental health issues as a result of the incident" and wants to avoid "potential backlash." Drai's Management Group, LLC, the owner of the Las Vegas venue where Cardi's performance took place, is also being sued for its alleged failure "to intervene or de-escalate the incident," Billboard reported. USA TODAY has reached out to Norris and representatives for Cardi B and Drai's Management Group for comment. In July 2023, Cardi B made social media headlines after footage from her performance at Drai's Beachclub showed her throwing her microphone at an attendee. In the video, which racked up over 100 million views to date, Cardi retaliated when a concertgoer standing at the edge of the stage tossed the contents of a large white cup, splashing her face and soaking her orange swimsuit cover-up as she performed her breakthrough hit "Bodak Yellow." Norris, however, offered a different version of events, saying during the press conference that Cardi had asked fans to slosh their drinks, and that simply because she had reached her limit does not excuse the "assault" and "battery" the fan endured. Cardi B fan reports battery after rapper threw microphone at her in Vegas In videos, the rapper is seen subsequently berating the individual as security retrieved her microphone and appeared to remove the fan. Cardi later reposted another video of the incident shared by a fan account. After the jarring encounter, the unidentified fan filed a police report for battery. No arrests or citations were issued, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Norris, noting that the lawsuit is being filed years after the incident, said a friend of the fan had contacted her while she was still in Las Vegas, and that she had been the woman's lawyer since then. They wanted to due the litigation right, rather than capitalize on a "15 minutes" of fame, Norris argued. Cardi B's attorney criticizes Jane Doe lawsuit as 'financial shakedown' Doe claims Cardi B encouraged "light splashing from drinks" during her performance at Drai's Beachclub, according to Rolling Stone and Billboard. Additional social media footage shared at the time of Cardi's performance showed the rapper seemingly welcoming getting splashed by fans. "Give me water," Cardi said in one clip, after which fans splashed her backside. It's unclear whether the footage was taken before or after the face-splashing incident. The woman, "acting in accordance with the environment created by Cardi B's express words and conduct, and in a manner consistent with other attendees, splashed a small portion of her drink in Cardi B's direction," the lawsuit stated, per Rolling Stone and Billboard. "In apparent anger and without warning, Cardi B suddenly and forcefully threw her microphone directly at (Doe)." Cardi B's microphone from viral video placed in auction for $100K The aggrieved concertgoer said the incident caused her "severe emotional distress, shock, humiliation and physical injury," Rolling Stone reported. Additionally, Doe said the sale of Cardi B's microphone in an auction for nearly $100K "further publicized the incident and exacerbated (her) emotional distress." "Fame is not a license to harm," Norris said. "Just because Cardi B is one of the most loved entertainers in the world does not mean that she is free from accountability." In a statement to Billboard addressing the lawsuit, Cardi B's attorney Drew Findling slammed the woman's complaint as a "transparent and pitiful attempted financial shakedown." "The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County District Attorney's Office closed this matter for insufficient evidence a long time ago," Findling told the news outlet. "But apparently the opportunity to try to make money off of a celebrity was too much for some willing law firm to pass up."
