How a train journey led to a lifeline: Online community gives seniors a lease of life

KOCHI: The world can be a daunting place for those aged 60 and above, especially when one becomes the soft target of scamsters and others trying to exploit your inability to navigate the maze of technological evolution. This was the sad truth that a 30-year-old realised on a train journey.
Shijin K P got to experience first-hand how travel agents dupe the elderly by promising them travel packages at exorbitant rates. Taking note of the issues faced by seniors, he formed a WhatsApp community, named 'How Old Are You,' to help them in their time of need.
Shijin details the events that led to the formation of the community, which today has more than 400 members, all of whom are over 55 years of age and from different walks of life. 'The journey on board Mangala Express from Kerala to Delhi was the turning point.
During the journey, which took over two days, I interacted with co-passengers, who were mostly those above 60. Talking to them, I realised that they were all travelling to Delhi for various purposes and had relied on travel agents for bookings. I understood that they had been robbed blind by agents. And when I pointed it out to them, most of them said that since they had no one, including children, to rely on, they paid good money to ensure a safe journey.'
Shijin was pained by the situation of the elderly co-passengers, who were all retirees. 'On the entire journey, I decided to help them out with things like accessing food and other necessities. The language barrier was another problem that I helped them out with,' says Shijin, who later discussed the issues with his friends in Delhi. 'We formed the community and decided that the first task would be to make the seniors tech-savvy,' says Shijin.
He and his friends began teaching the members on use of WhatsApp, Google Meet and other apps. The senior citizens were then taught the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI).
'We then created activities that helped them connect with their old selves and brush up on their latent talents like poetry writing. Initially, it was tough, but as the sessions progressed their writing skills developed significantly and we even had members composing songs on Suno AI,' he adds.

Soon, WhatsApp will offer AI-powered summaries of unread messages: Details

WhatsApp is testing a new AI-driven feature that enables users to privately generate summaries of unread messages in both personal and group chats. As per WABetaInfo, the feature is backed by Meta AI but operates within a system called Private Processing, which is designed to safeguard user privacy. Earlier this year, Meta announced its plans to introduce cloud-based AI features on WhatsApp, including tools to summarise unread chats and provide writing suggestions. These capabilities now appear to be entering the beta testing stage. According to WABetaInfo, the message summary function is currently available to a limited group of Android beta testers, with a wider rollout anticipated in the coming weeks. AI summary for WhatsApp Unread Messages: How it works The report explains that once Private Processing is enabled in the app's settings, users will see a special button when they have multiple unread messages. Tapping this button sends a secure, private request to the Private Processing system, which then generates a summary of the unread content. The report highlights that this process remains fully private, with no user data being stored. Private Processing ensures that all data is handled locally on the user's device, without access by WhatsApp, Meta, or any third-party entity. User interactions remain anonymous and unlinkable to personal identity, thanks to encrypted connections and secure routing. This functionality can be particularly useful for quickly catching up on long threads in active group chats, offering a brief overview without needing to scroll through every message—while keeping user privacy intact. The AI message summary is entirely optional. Users who prefer not to use it can simply ignore the unread messages button or disable the feature via Private Processing settings. Additionally, users with Advanced Chat Privacy enabled will not have access to this summary function. What is Private Processing? Meta previously introduced Private Processing as a way to protect user data while handling AI requests in the cloud. The system, described as a confidential computing framework, mirrors Apple's Private Cloud Compute (PCC), which was introduced last year to support Apple Intelligence while preserving privacy. According to Meta, Private Processing enables secure handling of AI-based tasks like message summarisation and writing suggestions, without granting access to personal data. It creates a protected virtual cloud environment where tasks are performed without Meta—or anyone else—seeing the actual message content.

WhatsApp Is Testing New Way To Share Images With Meta AI And Ask Questions: Here's How

Last Updated: WhatsApp offers Meta AI features that lets you create images and get a detailed food recipe but the AI chatbot could get more useful. WhatsApp and Meta AI are getting stronger with every iteration and soon we could have a dedicated AI tab that supports building new AI chatbots. However, the messaging app is also looking to enhance the use case of Meta AI and make it interact with content provided by the user. We have seen this work with Grok, Gemini AI using Live screen and even ChatGPT for the paid users. WhatsApp offering this ability through Meta AI for free could make it available to a wider audience when the official roll out happens. Meta AI on WhatsApp is testing the power to share images and documents. By forwarding an image you can share a prompt with Meta AI and seek more context like 'is this image real, or can you describe what is there in the image.' The details via WaBetainfo clearly tells you that Meta AI is looking to increase its reach and access through WhatsApp. 'You can now forward messages and photos to Meta AI to ask questions or get help," the note from the tipster with the update screenshot says. Having said that, Meta can only read messages people share with it, which is also mentioned in the conditions along with the main part that messages sent to Meta AI may be used to improve its systems. The feature is still being tested with a limited group but we expect some update from the company in the next few months. As we said earlier, WhatsApp will soon get a tab that will let you build new AI chatbots and you don't even need to know coding to make it happen. The AI chatbots you create can become your conversation partner as well. WhatsApp will do a step process to help you create an AI and seek your inputs based on which chatbot will be generated.
