Peter Crouch and Rio Ferdinand brand Premier League guard of honour tradition as 'awkward' and 'EMBARRASSING' ahead of Liverpool's trip to Chelsea

Daily Mail03-05-2025

Peter Crouch and Rio Ferdinand have both claimed they are not fans of giving a guard of honour to new champions as Liverpool prepare to receive one this weekend.
The Reds clinched the Premier League title with four game remaining last week after thrashing Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield.
A long-standing Premier League tradition sees opposing players honour the new champions by applauding them before each game.
However, former Liverpool striker Crouch says he doesn't understand the gesture and that it's "embarrassing"'.
'I don't like it. Maybe it shows respect but I just don't get it. It's embarrassing for the team that comes out and it's entirely embarrassing for the team that claps them on the field. It's not for me', Crouch said.
Six-time Premier League champion Ferdinand agreed, saying: 'I didn't like it. I've been fortunate to receive the guard of honour and be on the receiving end of it.
'Both are quite awkward. Crouchy's exactly right.'
Liverpool will travel to Chelsea in their first match as new champions on Sunday before facing Arsenal, Brighton and Crystal Palace.
Blues boss Enzo Maresca has insisted the Reds 'deserve' a guard of honour, with the west London club having also performed the gesture in 2020.
'Yes. It's tradition. We have to do that, and we are going to do that. They won the Premier League, so they deserve it,' Maresca said.
He added added: 'In terms of the gap (between Chelsea and Liverpool), it is there, you can see this clearly. My feeling is we are (moving) in the right direction and hopefully this gap can be smaller and smaller and smaller.
'The difference is they have been consistent compared to us. For part of the season, we were very good, then we lost some games.
'This has probably been the main reason why. And also in terms of experienced players that know how to win games and these kinds of things, I think they have something more compared to us.'

Real Madrid target surprise Arsenal star with contract talks 'not going well'

Real Madrid could make a shock move for an Arsenal star whose contract negotiations are 'not going well' according to reports. It's set to be a big summer for both clubs who ended up having underwhelming seasons, finishing runners-up in the Premier League and La Liga. Arsenal are close to securing a £51million transfer for midfielder Martin Zubimendi and are planning to spend big on a new striker, likely to be either Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres. Real meanwhile have a new manager as Xabi Alonso replaces Carlo Ancelotti and the Spaniard has already made his first signing in the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The right-back was set to move to Madrid on a free but Los Blancos will now pay Liverpool £8.4m to sign him early so he can play in the upcoming Club World Cup. Real have also been linked with making a big money move for William Saliba, but they now have their eye on another Arsenal defender. Myles Lewis-Skelly has just 12 months left on his Gunners contract and, as reported by The Guardian, talks over a new deal are 'not going well'. Real are keeping tabs on the situation and could look to sign another England star following Jude Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold. 18-year-old Lewis-Skelly has enjoyed a meteoric rise since his senior debut last September, making 39 appearances across all competitions, including two stunning performances against Real in the Champions League. More Trending Thomas Tuchel is certainly a fan, selecting the teenager in his first England squad in March before he scored on his debut against Albania. While bizarrely not nominated for the official award, both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher named Lewis-Skelly as their young player of the season. 'At 18 you're a baby,' Liverpool hero Carragher said on Sky Sports. 'The thought you could win Young Player of the Year at that age. That's something that Michael Owen does or Wayne Rooney, absolute superstars. 'I couldn't believe he wasn't on that list. The reason I went for him was how well he played in big games that I've watched. Against Man City, against Liverpool, in the Bernabeu [against Real].' 'That [left-back] has been a massive problem position for Arsenal and he's gone in and looked like it's his and he's always been there,' Manchester United legend Neville added. 'That's the biggest compliment you can give to a young player, they just slot in. [Bukayo] Saka's done it in the last few years. To go in that position and do what he's done.' Lewis-Skelly's efforts have been all the more impressive given that he came through the academy as a midfielder but has played almost exclusively as a left-back under Mikel Arteta. Arsenal will be desperate to tie him down to a new deal and they are also in contract talks with fellow wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri. The likes of Lewis-Skelly and Alexander-Arnold will next be in action when England take on Andorra in a World Cup qualifier on June 7. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
