Omani pavilion wins award at London Design Biennale
The pavilion has been designed by multidisciplinary artist Haitham al Busafi and curated by the Zawraq Collective. Commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the project reflects the ministry's broader efforts to promote artistic and intellectual creativity among Omani youth.
'Memory Grid' explores the ideas of memory, value and preservation in a fast-changing world. Visitors are invited to observe how perception shifts with perspective, with meaning transforming depending on how closely or distantly the work is viewed.
Drawing inspiration from Oman's pottery traditions, the installation reimagines ancient clay vessels – once vital for carrying water and connecting communities – as symbols of cultural memory. The pavilion presents these traditional forms as metaphors for protecting what is valued, both in the past and present.

In a modern context, the installation proposes that data is the new essential resource – requiring safeguarding much like water once did. Through the immersive experience, visitors are encouraged to reflect on how heritage, knowledge and identity are passed through generations.
The project represents how traditional symbols can guide modern questions about preservation. The win at the Biennale highlights Oman's increasing engagement with contemporary art and design on a global stage.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth said the pavilion represents the strategic direction to elevate creative output by young Omanis to international platforms.

Khareef Dhofar unveils heritage experiences
SALALAH: The Dhofar Municipality is organising a variety of events for the Khareef Dhofar Season 2025, offering a comprehensive experience that blends culture, entertainment and innovation. The season features international shows, some of which are being presented for the first time in Oman and globally. The various event locations are attracting a large number of visitors due to their diverse and engaging content. He added that the Modern Waterfront provides a complete family entertainment destination, including a walkway, a children's area, a princesses' palace, and a variety of restaurants and food trucks. It also hosts the 'Awdah' event, which simulates traditional Omani life with shows of traditional arts, heritage markets and handicrafts that preserve the national heritage. Gawas explained that Awqad Park, branded as 'Children's Time', is dedicated to providing innovative educational and recreational activities for children in a safe environment. Meanwhile, Salalah Park, or the 'Healthy Park', hosts sports paths and challenges suitable for all ages, encouraging an active and balanced lifestyle. Salalah: Dhofar Municipality has unveiled an ambitious programme for Khareef Dhofar 2025, offering visitors an exceptional mix of culture, entertainment and innovation, alongside first-time international performances and record-breaking attractions. Ammar bin Obeid Ghawas, Director of Events and Awareness at Dhofar Municipality, said the season was carefully designed to cater to visitors of all ages and backgrounds, combining modern interactive experiences with authentic Omani traditions. 'We are committed to delivering a season that blends culture, entertainment and innovation in a way that meets the expectations of our diverse audience,' Ghawas told the Oman Observer. 'This year, we are introducing attractions never before seen in Oman — and some of them on a global scale.'Ittin Square, the season's central hub, will host the world's largest inflatable amusement park and the largest stage of its kind, equipped with cutting-edge sound and lighting systems. Visitors can look forward to eco-friendly fireworks and daily drone shows over 47 days, folklore performances from 18 countries, and vibrant Omani markets showcasing products from small and medium enterprises. University of Nizwa launches creativity competition
Nizwa – The University of Nizwa's College of Arts and Sciences has launched the first edition of the 'Creativity Competition' in short story writing, open to students from higher education institutions across Oman. The competition aims to highlight young literary talent and promote noble human values through classical Arabic short stories. It seeks to encourage creativity, develop writing skills, and support emerging Omani authors. Dr Masoud bin Saeed al Hadidi 'The competition aims to consolidate the role of literature in serving society and strengthening cultural identity,' said Dr Masoud bin Saeed al Hadidi, Assistant Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Nizwa. 'It contributes to building a cultured generation aware of the issues facing its homeland and nation.' Submissions must be original, unpublished works written in classical Arabic, consistent with Islamic principles and human values. Each participant may submit only one entry. The deadline for submissions is November 10. The competition is part of the university's broader efforts to nurture creative individuals, researchers and innovators by organising events and contests in literature, thought and culture. It reflects the institution's commitment to consolidating Arab culture and motivating youth to express themselves through Arabic literature. Dr Hadidi informed that the competition will be held annually, rotating among various literary genres such as novels, poetry, and short stories. Winners will be honoured at the Arabic Language Department's annual celebration.
