What Is 'Broke Man Propaganda?'

Summer is here and 'Broke Man Propaganda' is in the air—at least according to certain Materialists viewers who have taken to social media to air some grievances re: the hit movie's supposedly happy ending. (Spoiler alert: This article obviously contains spoilers on the ending of Materialists.) For those just tuning in, here's an exceptionally brief rundown of the plot: Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a professional matchmaker whose career in setting up high-networth individuals seemingly reflects her own views of romantic relationships as inherently transactional. A single gal looking for a wealthy partner to support her, Lucy's head is naturally turned by Harry (Pedro Pascal), a successful tech founder, at a client's wedding. But guess who's also at the wedding? Lucy's ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans), a struggling actor who's working a catering gig. And guess why they broke up? Money troubles. More standard romance movie plottage ensues and in the end, Lucy breaks things off with the wealthy new love interest she thought she always wanted and marries her broke ex-boyfriend, because it turns out relationships aren't transactional and love really does conquer all! This 'love is greater than money' message is a well-established trope, one that's existed for eons and has appeared in everything from fairytales and Christmas specials to The Notebook (justice for Lon). Hence why some viewers—specifically those calling 'Broke Man Propaganda' on the film—find it rather reductive. Essentially, this critique argues that the movie's moral privileging of 'true love' over financial stability neglects the economic realities women face under patriarchy and reinforces a narrative that encourages women to sacrifice their needs and desires for the sake of some kind of moral purity supposedly preserved by partnering with a man who does not, in fact, meet those needs and desires. In other words, it encourages women to settle. While others have praised the film's message—which comes to some as a welcome pushback against a transactional view of relationships that has gained traction in recent years via TikTok trends like hypergamy and 'dating up'—many find it frustratingly unrealistic. Because while this moralistic ideal of love over money may be baked into societal mores, it is not one that's actually supported under our capitalistic society itself—particularly for women. As I've previously written, 'It's a bit of an open secret that while society decries blurring the lines between love and money, it remains structured in a way that financially rewards romantic partnership—particularly of the legal, governmentally recognized variety. From tax benefits to the possibility of finally clearing the wage gap by saying 'I do' to a man's salary, the allure of patriarchally sanctioned partnership is strong.' Our current era may mark the first time in recent history that financial stability independent of a male partner is a possibility for women as a class, but the reality is that this level of fiscal security remains out of reach for many, if not most, women as individuals. This is not to argue that love is or should be transactional, but rather to point out that this idea of 'true love' unadulterated by financial or other seemingly less 'pure' considerations is a myth—and it remains a myth because of the very patriarchal systems that were literally designed to render women dependent on men in the first place. To women who lack the financial freedom to access the romantic freedom required to pursue relationships based purely on love without regard for survival or stability, the apparent moral of the Materialists story being that we should choose the poor man over the rich one can feel like a slap in the face. Hence, Broke Man Propaganda. The frustration with this apparent display of Broke Man Propaganda currently playing out online is not about women being 'golddiggers,' wanting to marry for money, or foisting their unreasonable fiscal demands upon men. It's about the exhaustion of existing under a patriarchal society that was literally built to keep us financially dependent on romantic relationships with men yet simultaneously shames us for making financially advantageous choices in our love lives. For many of us, the financial freedom to choose the poor man based on love alone is the dream. And for too many of us, it's one that remains out of reach.

Water Park Visitors Buy Ride Photos—Not Prepared for What They Get

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A video about a water park visit in Spain took an unexpectedly hilarious turn for some visitors, whose souvenir photos were altered in bizarre ways, has gone viral on TikTok. The short clip, posted by @danielleseagrave, captures the aftermath of purchasing around $40 worth of ride photos at Aqualand Maspalomas, an amusement park in Maspalomas on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria. The clip has been viewed 1.6 million times since it was shared on June 1. "Paid €35 [around $40] for pictures at the water park only to zoom in an hour later and notice the facial recognition has screwed us over..." text overlaid on the video reads. The video later shows close-up shots of the riders' faces, which are distorted and altered, with some eyes appearing unnaturally large or misaligned, seemingly altered by artificial intelligence. Despite the flawed visuals, the TikToker stood by the purchase. "The best €35 spent in my opinion," reads a caption on the video. While the viral video was shared in good humor, it also underscores growing public concern around the role of AI in photography. A June 2024 paper in the International Journal of Modern Engineering & Management Research highlights how AI is reshaping image processing across industries, but not without controversy. "Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed various industries, with photography being one of the most profoundly affected," the paper notes. However, it also warns that "AI's ability to manipulate images, particularly through advanced tools like deepfakes and neural filters, raised concerns among both professionals and the general public." The study found that 42 percent of respondents were concerned that AI-generated manipulations could compromise the authenticity of images. Meanwhile, 30 percent of professionals cited fears that AI tools might be misused for deception or distortion. 'Crying' While AI is increasingly being used to enhance digital photography, the instance in the viral video appears to show how algorithms can also produce unintended and humorous effects. Viewers on TikTok were amused by the photos shown in the viral video and flooded the comments section with their reactions. "Sorry but this has made me laugh so much," wrote user lozmach, while deeljones simply commented, "Crying." The original poster replied: "Couldn't stop laughing." One user, Jennisykes, who had visited the park a day earlier, commented: "We went yesterday charged us 40. Pics are hilarious. Legs are killing us all today." Asked whether their own pictures were similarly glitched, Jennisykes responded: "No. our eyes are ok. don't know what's happened to yours lol xxxxxx." Another viewer, Paul Jacobs, speculated that AI might be to blame, saying: "I'm guessing it's low resolution cameras using AI to increase the image sizes with some wonky results." The original poster responded with tongue-in-cheek enthusiasm: "Great results." User @k_dolly_cat commented: "I'd ask for a refund what in the ai...." The original poster replied: "I honestly feel like the money was worth it for the amount of times I've laughed." Newsweek reached out to the original poster via TikTok and the park via its website contact form for comment. This video has not been independently verified. AI-generated video of a lion in supermarket misleads online

'WILD LION STORMS INTO GROCERY STORE IN SOUTH AFRICA,' reads the caption of an X post published on June 14, 2025. The 70-second clip shows two different scenes of a lion devouring meat straight from the meat section in a supermarket. A man is also seen running out of the store after attempting to approach the animal. The owner of the X account describes himself as a South African based in the United States. Similar posts have also been shared thousands of times on Facebook and liked more than one million times on Instagram. But claims that the video shows a real lion eating meat in a South African store are false. The footage contains visible cues that it is AI-generated. For example, six seconds into the video, the lion's tail briefly fades and disappears before reappearing. At 28 seconds, a shape that looks like an extra foot suddenly materialises out of nowhere by the lion's hind legs. When the lion moves, it then morphs into something that looks more like a piece of meat. At 48 seconds, a visual effect that looks like water drops appears in front of the meat display and changes some of the meat packs into different shapes. This is especially noticeable in the bottom-left corner. Three seconds later, a roll of ham on the floor starts moving before the lion touches it. The video currently circulating is watermarked '@ataquesferoz', which a Google search shows belongs to a TikTok user. The TikTok account posted the video on June 14, 2025, with a caption reading 'Wild Lion Storms Into Grocery Store #animals #wild animals #Lion #Africa' (archived here). However, it also labelled the video as AI-generated. According to TikTok, it requires 'people to disclose realistic AI-generated content (AIGC) so that they can express their creativity while providing context for viewers' and asks users to report if they see 'undisclosed realistic' AI-generated content (archived here). The TikTok account contains hundreds of similar AI-generated videos that show animals performing jaw-dropping feats. Although the video of the lion was fabricated, wild animals do occasionally escape from wildlife reserves or wander onto the streets in South Africa. For example, four lions got loose from Kruger National Park in April 2025, and more recently, an elephant seal wandered inland in May (archived here and here).
