Russell Westbrook Contract Decision Has Massive Salary Implications for Nuggets
Russell Westbrook Contract Decision Has Massive Salary Implications for Nuggets originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Denver Nuggets' core roster is already slated to look a bit different in 2025-26, and the 2024-25 NBA offseason hasn't even officially begun just yet. Advertisement Denver majority owner Josh Kroenke shockingly fired both 10-year head coach Michael Malone and championship general manager Calvin Booth with just days remaining in the Nuggets' regular season, replacing them with interim head coach David Adelman and interim GM Ben Tazer. While Adelman has shaken the interim sticker and will serve as the Nuggets' long-term head coaching option, Tazer's status is more tenuous, even with the 2025 NBA Draft and free agency now just weeks away. The Nuggets finished the regular season with a 50-32 record and pushed the NBA Finals-bound Oklahoma City Thunder to seven games in their second round playoff encounter. Denver was severely hampered by that seventh semifinal contest, with starting forwards Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon striving to play through major injuries. Apr 9, 2025; Sacramento, California, USA; Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook (4) directs his team against the Sacramento Kings during the first quarter at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images Adelman's rotations were fairly limited, and he had to lean on erratic or unproven bench players to add a spark. Eventually, the Nuggets' luck ran out. Advertisement One of those bench pieces appears to be ready to move on. Former nine-time All-Star and 2017 league MVP Russell Westbrook will reportedly decline his $3.47 million player option for next year and instead explore unrestricted free agency, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line (via Substack). Westbrook, 36, had until June 29 to make a decision on the second year of the two-season deal he had agreed to with Denver last summer. The 6-foot-4 UCLA alum is now slated to join potentially his seventh NBA franchise across the last eight seasons. Still, there's a chance Westbrook could stick around. Advertisement He averaged solid numbers off the bench for Denver, while staying healthy throughout the regular season and playoffs. Across 75 available regular season bouts, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points on a .449/.323/.661 slash line, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 swipes. In reduced playing time, those numbers shrank a bit during the postseason. He averaged 11.7 points on inefficient shooting splits of .391/.317/.700, along with 3.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists (against 2.3 turnovers), and 0.9 steals. The biggest issues with Westbrook are his inclination to hold the ball for too long (especially on a team with elite creators like three-time MVP center Nikola Jokic and guard Jamal Murray), his inconsistent off-ball effort, his poor jump-shooting, and his disengaged defense. He may have some value as an eighth man, especially in the regular season, but giving him significant playoff minutes at this stage is risky. Bobby Marks of ESPN unpacks how Denver's cap situation benefits from Westbrook's reported decision. The Nuggets are understandably desperate to help Jokic win his second title with the franchise after two disappointing second round playoff exits. Denver thankfully now has some breathing room below the NBA's harshly punitive second luxury tax apron, with 12 players currently signed. Advertisement The team can now use its $5.7 taxpayer mid-level exception, a mechanism that would have been unavailable to Denver as a second apron team, and two veteran minimum slots to add new talent around its core of Jokic, Murray and Gordon. Key swingman Christian Braun is still on his rookie-scale contract at present, but will become extension-eligible this summer, and could fetch a major raise. But the Nuggets can worry about what a likely-pricey Braun deal kicking in for 2025-26 will do to their payroll later. For now, the team should focus on affordable help for Jokic, and perhaps sniff around possible Porter trade packages. Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman getting closer to return from quad injury
'I don't think (minor league games will be necessary), but we'll see; you never know,' Bregman said. 'Maybe it's one of those things where it's like, go play a few innings. It might be straight back, it might be whatever they recommend. See where we go. 'It's healing quickly. All things are going in the right direction.' Manager Alex Cora said: 'We have ways for him to get at-bats here. His at-bats will not change. Obviously, timing will be a little bit off, but we'll get there when we get there.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up For now, during his 12-hour days that he said have him arriving at the ballpark at 11 a.m., Bregman is focused on running/agility drills and strengthening his leg. Advertisement 'The biggest thing is building running volume and running capacity, to where I can be able to withstand going 4 for 4 with two doubles off the wall that I gotta get to second on,' he said. 'Once I build up to that running volume and that capacity, I'll be ready to go.' Bregman declined to reveal a timeline or his targeted return date, allowing only that he hopes to be back before the All-Star break, which begins July 14. Advertisement Compared with the emphasis on the running, which he started in the middle of last week, Bregman downplayed the length of the baseball activities progression. Lately, he has been limited to throwing — no hitting, no fielding. 'I feel like that stuff will take, like, three days and I'll be ready to go baseball-wise,' Bregman said. 'Three days from zero to being ready to play in a game.' Bregman has been on the injured list since May 24. The Red Sox have used rookie Marcelo Mayer and journeyman Abraham Toro at third in his place. Bregman's previous quad injury, to his left leg in 2021, sidelined him for about 10 weeks. Initially, he thought this would be like that. Now, he is much more optimistic. 'He's in a good spot mentally,' Cora said. 'He's made some progress, but I don't want to jump the gun and start thinking ahead. I've been patient throughout the process and I'll stay the same way.' The daily Roman On his fifth day in the majors, Roman Anthony received an upgraded cubby in the clubhouse. He had been assigned an auxiliary locker in the middle of the room, typically assigned to less-prominent players who perhaps might be sent back to the minors soon. But the Red Sox gave him a permanent stall, between Bregman and Jarren Duran — meaningful real estate for a top prospect. Related : 'Not a bad spot, right?' Anthony said. Bregman said: 'We just wanted him to be out of the middle of the clubhouse. We told him to come over here and hang out with the boys.' Count Bregman among Anthony's big fans. 'I think he's going to be one of the best hitters in all of baseball,' Bregman said. 'He's going to be a real force in this league.' Advertisement Houck heals up Tanner Houck ( Houck was upbeat after a two-inning bullpen session — on the Fenway Park mound, not in the bullpen — Friday afternoon. At Houck's request, Duran stood in to offer an extra degree of simulation, which the pitcher appreciated. 'That's a lot better feedback than just having a dummy in there, because we can have a conversation,' Houck said. 'We've been together since (Double A) Portland. He's probably seen me throw more than anyone on this team. So getting his feedback [is helpful], especially from a lefty's standpoint. That's what I've struggled with in the past.' The new guy Righthanded reliever Jorge Alcala , whose fastball averages 97 m.p.h., joined the Red Sox after being Wilyer Abreu (left oblique strain) swung a bat as planned, per Cora, leaving open the possibility he rejoins the club as soon as he is eligible to come off the IL next Friday … Kutter Crawford (right wrist discomfort) is stuck playing catch and 'not feeling great with it,' Cora said … Liam Hendriks began playing catch, his first time since going on the IL with right hip inflammation two weeks ago … First baseman Ryan Noda , recently designated for assignment, was claimed off waivers by the White Sox. WNBA All-Star is coming up. Here's how to vote for your favorite players
INDIANAPOLIS — WNBA All-Star weekend is just over a month away, and Indianapolis is deep in preparations to host the game. Starting Thursday, fans will have a big part in deciding who will take the court at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on July 19. Fan voting for WNBA All-Star runs from June 12 to 28, and the All-Stars will be announced in early July. Advertisement Here's how voting for All-Star works. How are WNBA All-Stars decided? The WNBA selects All-Stars from a combination of fan, player, media and coach voting. Fans account for 50% of the initial vote, while player and media selections account for 25% each. The league will then combine all of those scores, and the four frontcourt players and six guards with the top combined votes will become the All-Star starters. The coaches will then vote to select the 12 total reserves. They are required to vote for three guards and five frontcourt players, then can vote for four players regardless of position. They cannot vote for players on their own team. Advertisement Relive Caitlin Clark's rookie season with our collector's book The 22 All-Stars will be selected regardless of conference affiliation, and the All-Star game will not be played as a competition between conferences. How will the All-Star Game work? The 2024 season saw 12 All-Stars, selected similarly to the 2025 process, play Team USA before they headed off to the Paris Olympics. This season will mark the return to two full All-Star teams. The two All-Star starters that have the most fan votes will become the two captains, and they will be part of a draft to pick their respective teams. They will first pick from the remaining pool of eight starters, then from the 12 reserves. ESPN will broadcast the results of the draft during an edition of WNBA Countdown at 7 p.m. July 8. Advertisement The coaches for the teams will be determined by the two coaches in the league that have the best record through July 4. The coach with the best overall record will be paired with the captain that has the most fan votes. How do I vote for Fever players for WNBA All-Star? Fans can submit one full ballot of up to 10 players per day, starting June 12 and ending June 28. All active WNBA players on rosters will be able to receive votes. Fans can vote through or the WNBA App. There are three 2-for-1 days on June 14, 20, and 27, when fans' one ballot will count twice. 'So far so good': 2 weeks after ankle injury, Fever's Sophie Cunningham hoping to be cleared Where is the WNBA All-Star Game? The WNBA All-Star weekend is in Indianapolis for the first time in league history. Advertisement It will be the second straight year that the city has hosted an All-Star weekend, though, as the NBA came to Indianapolis in February 2024. What Fever players have been All-Stars? Five players on Indiana's roster have been All-Stars at least once, whether it be with the Fever or on another team. DeWanna Bonner, a 15-year veteran of the league who is in her first season with the Fever, has been an All-Star six times: three with the Phoenix Mercury (2015, 2018-19) and three with the Connecticut Sun (2021, 2023-24). Natasha Howard has been an All-Star twice: 2019 with the Seattle Storm and 2022 with the New York Liberty. Advertisement Both Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston have two All-Star appearances in their career, both in 2023 and 2024 with the Fever. Boston was an All-Star starter as a rookie in 2023. Caitlin Clark started the All-Star game as a rookie in 2024, and she has one All-Star selection so far in her young career. Chloe Peterson is the Indiana Fever beat reporter for IndyStar.
