Celebrating USC football's All-Americans in honor of the Fourth of July

USA Today04-07-2025
Friday marks the Fourth of July. 249 years ago, the founders signed the Declaration of Independence, marking the foundation of America. In honor of our county's birthday, let's take a look at some fun facts about All-Americans.
USC football has produced 177 All-Americans in program history. The most recent Trojan to earn such honors was punter Eddie Czaplicki last season.
USC's first All-American was guard Brice Taylor, all the way back in 1925. This year will mark the 100th anniversary of Taylor's All-American season.
Of the Trojans' All-Americans, 84 have been Consensus All-American selections—having been voted a first-team All-American by at least three of the five main selectors. This ranks fifth among all schools, behind only Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, and Alabama.
Between 1962 and 1990, USC produced at least one first-team All-American in every season. In addition, from 1972 through 1987, the Trojans had at least one Consensus All-American every year.

Svensson's sizzling 60 sets PGA Tour tournament record

Adam Svensson has made a 48-foot eagle putt on the closing hole to complete an 11-under-par 60 to claim a two-shot lead after one round of the PGA Tour's 3M Open. Svensson also made nine birdies and did not drop a shot in the lowest round in the tournament's seven-year history to lead over American Sam Stevens and Dane Thorbjorn Olesen. As Australia's challenge failed to materialise, the Canadian tied the TPC Twin Cities course record set by Paul Goydos at the 2017 3M Championship on the PGA Tour Champions. Chris Gotterup, who finished third at last week's British Open and won the Scottish Open two weeks ago, is three shots back along with Chad Ramey and Matti Schmid. Zac Blair, Chris Kirk, Jake Knapp and Brendan Valdes are another shot back, with Rickie Fowler and Emiliano Grillo among those at six under and four strokes off the pace. An eagle at the last to break the course record‼️Adam Svensson shoots 60 to take the clubhouse lead @3MOpen.📺 @PGATOURLIVE on ESPN+ — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) July 24, 2025 Svensson's lone tour win is the 2022 RSM Classic. The 31-year-old has one top-25 finish in 21 starts this season and has missed 11 cuts. "I had a great range session today. Just really putted amazing, I made a bunch of breakers. It was probably my best putting round I ever had," he said after needing just 25 putts, including a nearly 40-foot birdie on the 11th hole and a 34-footer on the fourth. His career-best 60 is the second-lowest score on the PGA Tour this season. Jake Knapp shot 59 at the Cognizant Classic in February. Stevens could have shot 59 with an eagle on the par-5 18th, but instead he put his second shot from 246 yards into the water in front of the green, leading to his lone bogey and a 62 that was still his lowest round on tour. "I have a pretty big gap between my three iron and my three wood, and I hit a terrible shot," he said. "I thought if I hit a three wood, it was just going to fly to the back of the green, and I kind of had to hit a three iron perfect to even cover the water. But I figured that was my best chance to shoot 59, so I gave it a go." Fowler and Grillo are among a group of 18 players who rank between 60th and 80th in the FedEx Cup standings, needing a strong performance to help secure spots in the 70-man field for the first playoff event in two weeks. Fowler entered the week at No. 63 and Grillo is No. 71. "At the end of the day, good golf solves a lot of things," Fowler said. Adam Scott, once again, is the leading Australian, some nine shots off the pace in a tie for 77th after opening with a two-under 69. Karl Vilips (70), Cam Davis (71), Aaron Baddeley (73) and Harrison Endycott (73) all need strong second rounds to make the halfway cut. With AAP

Report: Luka Doncic will sign four-year deal with Lakers once eligible

Perhaps the mild anxiety regarding whether Luka Doncic will sign a long-term contract extension of some kind with the Los Angeles Lakers by the end of this summer is unfounded. He is currently preparing to represent his native Slovenia in the EuroBasket tournament, which will take place during the latter part of the summer and run deep into September. Brian Windhorst recently said that it would be reasonable to expect Doncic to wait until he returns to the United States late in the offseason before he signs a deal. However, according to Martin Pavcnik of SportKlub, Doncic is "expected" to sign his extension on Aug. 2, which is the first day he will be eligible to do so (h/t Lakers Nation). "Although last season taught us that there is no sealed future in the NBA, even if the back of your jersey says 'Dončić', it still seems that Luka and the LA Lakers will announce a long-term journey together in just over a week. The Ljubljana native is already waiting for a new multi-year contract in California. He is expected to sign it on August 2nd." The coach of the Slovenian team may have tipped his hand as far as when Doncic will get his extension done. 'I expect him to arrive after August 4, when he has completed all his obligations in the USA,' said coach Aleksander Sekulić yesterday. In fact, according to the website, Doncic already has some sort of agreement in place for a four-year extension. "The American media speculated that Luka, who has been sculpting his body in recent weeks, losing several kilograms and reducing his body fat percentage, might be delaying signing a new contract since September. There were even hints that he might wait until next summer, when he would be a completely free player and available to all clubs. But it seems that the uncertainty will soon be over. Dončić is said to have agreed to a four-year extension worth 229 million US dollars." Obviously, getting the 26-year-old superstar to sign on the dotted line before the start of training camp would give the Lakers organization some tremendous clarity as far as its direction in the immediate future without having to wonder if he wants to stick around. Doncic has already been acting like someone who plans on being with the Lakers for a while and is emotionally invested in the franchise. He helped convince veteran guard Marcus Smart to come to the team, and he was reportedly motivated to play alongside new Lakers center Deandre Ayton, with whom he shares the same agent.

Big Ten media days: USC-Notre Dame rivalry expires in 2026 — with no sure bet it will be extended

LAS VEGAS — All the reshuffling of schedules, conferences and playoff formats in college football has placed one of the sport's best traditions in peril: the USC-Notre Dame game. The contract for a rivalry that dates to 1926 expires after their game in 2026. Both schools have expressed a willingness to lock down more games, but differences over how many appear to be holding up the negotiations. USC's move to the Big Ten gave the Trojans less flexibility on their nonconference schedule. Big Ten teams have nine conference games and only three open slots. Speaking at Big Ten media days Thursday, Trojans coach Lincoln Riley said he was, of course, hopeful that the series will continue. But not at any cost. 'I want to play the game. Absolutely. It's one of the reasons I came here,' Riley said. 'But also, my allegiance and my loyalty is not to Notre Dame, and it's not to anybody else. I'm the head football coach at USC, and I'm going to back USC.' Some of the uncertainty revolves around the College Football Playoff. The Trojans have lost six of the last seven against Notre Dame. If CFP leaders decide to award four automatic bids to the Big Ten, which is the conference's preference, a long-term deal to play the Irish might be more palatable to USC. A system with more at-large bids, however, would make it more difficult, from a CFP standpoint, to absorb a nonconference loss. Preston Stone is a good ol' Texas boy who starred in high school for Parish Episcopal and then spent four years at SMU. After entering the transfer portal following last season, however, he finally got to visit a team he once admired from afar — behind a video-game controller when he was 11 years old. 'For absolutely no reason whatsoever, when I was a little kid playing NCAA 14, I would always be Northwestern,' Stone said. 'They had really cool black uniforms and they had a fast quarterback in Kain Colter, who I used to love playing with in the game.' So, after touring the campus and meeting Wildcats coach David Braun and offensive coordinator Zach Lujan, Stone was sold on transferring from the Lone Star State to Evanston. 'Facilities are incredible, I think we have the best indoor in the whole country,' Stone said. 'You could feel a level of sincerity from Coach Braun. That was just different. And first meeting coach Lujan, you could tell from the first couple minutes with him, how incredibly smart of an offensive mind he is. I knew that if I came here they were going to set me up for success.' If UCLA improves on the field as much as coach DeShaun Foster did behind the mic at Big Ten media days, this could be a good year for the Bruins. Foster spoke Thursday and made fun of his 2024 appearance, which included a cringeworthy 72-second opening statement highlighted by this observation about the program he was taking over: 'I'm sure you guys don't know much about UCLA, our football program, but we're in LA.' In heading to the lectern Thursday, Foster didn't shy from that moment. He acknowledged he took some ribbing from players and others after last year's effort. 'Last year I stood up here and reminded everyone that UCLA is in LA, which, looking back, might have been the most obvious geography lesson in Big Ten history,' Foster said. 'But you know what? Important things are worth stating clearly. We are in LA, and we're proud to be in LA' Underneath all those laughs, though, was a serious message. Foster, embarking on his second season at Westwood, said the moment 'taught me a valuable lesson. Authenticity resonates more deeply than perfection.' He faces a big challenge. The Bruins haven't won a conference title since 1998 and haven't played on Jan. 1 since that season's Rose Bowl. Bolstering UCLA's hopes is the arrival of quarterback Nico Iamaleava from Tennessee. Iamaleava helped the Vols make the College Football Playoff last season. Penn State's Nick Dawkins, the son of NBA legend Daryl Dawkins, will be one of four returning starters on the offensive line this season. That might not have been the case had the Nittany Lions not lost to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff. 'After that game specifically, I was pretty dead set after that for sure,' Dawkins said of his decision to return. 'I had some thoughts prior to the season ending, from a personal standpoint for my NFL draft stock, if it would be the best decision to come back. But when something like that happens, it kind of trumps all the individual stuff.' Dawkins said it became more about the legacy of Penn State football and what he wanted to leave behind for the program's history. 'My whole life, I've been representing my last name, and my last name has had so much legacy and worth attached to it before,' said Dawkins, an all-Big Ten honorable mention last season. 'I've always been a part of something bigger than myself, and that's how I view my life, and Penn State falls right into that category.'
